Just then, her phone rang. Leke was on the line.

'Hello.' She was quick to pick the call. She glued the phone to her right ear and listened for some seconds.

'So, that bitch is still following him around, ehn?' She frowned deeply. 'Despite my warnings, that slut will not relent, abi?' Her words were full of scorn, acrimony and hate.

She listened for some moments again. 'Alright, thank you, Leke. Thank you for the information.'

She disconnected the line, looking seriously agitated.

'Sister, I hope there's no problem. You sounded very indignant.' Sam had been staring at his sister. Her choice of words could be saucy, and he always found such revulsive.

'Don't mind Biyi. I don't know what he sees in them. There's this lady he's presently having an affair with. I've confronted the lady and I've warned her to stay off, but obviously they are still seeing each other.'

He nodded to show understanding and empathy. 'Sister, I think you should calm down. I think you should take things easy.'

'How could I? My marriage is under a big threat and you're asking me to calm down?' She moved her hands restlessly. Her agitated state was unmistakable.

'I understand. I ...'

'No, you don't. You're not the one whose marriage is threatened.'

'You're quite right. All the same, sister, I think you should take things easy.'

She shook her head. That could mean she dissented or she was still seriously agitated.

'Let me say this,' he pressed on. 'I see you and your husband becoming the best of couple. I see the two of you having a joyous life.'

Funmi laughed in derision. 'Joyous life with all these flirting he's indulging in?' She scoffed. 'With all these rubbish he's doing up and down?'

He patiently held on to his optimism. 'You'll be the best of couple, no doubt. I can tell you that the revelation I had about your union is that of
a wonderful, loving and undying one.'

'So, why are things upside down the way they are?'

'It's just for a short while, my sister. It's just for a little while more.' He smiled warmly at her.

Then, he looked at her intently. 'But there's something you have to do on your part. Move close to God. Have absolute faith in Him and let
him take charge of everything.'

He was solemn and serious. 'Confronting the lady and making threats will not solve anything. Rather, that will only aggravate the matter. You
need to trust God on this and leave things to him.'

She sighed. 'So, I should just leave him and let him continue all his unfaithfulness? That's what you want me to do? You want me to leave
him so that those ashewo can completely take him away from me?'

Sam smiled and shook his head. 'Leave him to God. It's not your battle. It's the Lord's battle. Have unshaken faith and let God fight on your behalf. Leave everything to Him and you'll be amazed by what will happen thereafter.'

'So, I should leave him alone?'

'You should leave him to God. You'll be amazed by what God will do.'

The night after Ade told Nana she would not be needed in his life again, Nana got back home, feeling less worried. She had thought of many things, and had come to the conclusion that God himself wanted the relationship to end.

However, she felt she had committed a lot of transgressions and she needed forgiveness. But first and foremost, she felt she would have to forgive herself. Yes, she needed to forgive her for being a fool in love.

How could she have acted the way she did? How could she have allowed herself to be used the way he had used her? Why did she allow
wisdom to take a back seat, while folly took over the the steering wheel?

Then, she must ask God for forgiveness. What the pastor of her church said was very true, she realized. When she had gone to tell the man
about the challenges she had in her relationship, he had told her that she and the man ought not to be living together in the first place, since
there was no marriage or any formalization of the union.

Nana realized all these were true. That meant she had been living in sin. Yes, the two of them had been committing the sin of fornication all
these while. Oh God, please forgive me, she prayed.

She had decided to move closer to God. Yes, she must become devoted to serving God henceforth, not just playing lip service to doing so.

She would not even rush things as far as starting a new relationship was concerned. She had decided that rather than leaning on her own understanding, she would allow God to lead her and direct her steps.

When she got home, she went to the bedroom, stripped naked and went on her knees. Her prayers were deep and very emotional. She wept
in-between as she confessed her sins and asked God for forgiveness. She prayed that the Holy Spirit should completely take over her life and
direct every step she made, henceforth.

After the prayers, she wore her night dress and went to the kitchen to prepare dinner. She decided she would still be cooking for him, but she
would not need to wait for him before taking her meal again.

She also decided that she would see an estate agent the following day to get her own place. There was no need lingering in his apartment any
more. Meanwhile, she would not sleep on his bed again. For the remaining few days she would be spending in that house, she would be sleeping
in the sitting-room.

She suddenly felt completely free of all worries and troubles. Her mind was at rest and she believed that things would start becoming better
from that moment on. Thank you, Lord, she muttered under her breath.

She finished cooking the jollof rice and dished a generous portion for herself. She took a chicken lap and beef. No one and nothing would
stop her joy henceforth.

Funmi woke in the middle of the night. She went to the attached toilet to her bedroom to ease herself. She returned to the bed to continue her sleep, but sleep seemed to have deserted her. Several minutes later, she was unable to sleep again. Maybe she should put on the television and watch the late night movies.

She was about to switch the gadget on when her mind went to what her brother had told. Give your life entirely to God, he had said. She held the remote control of the teevee, but something stopped her from putting it on. She dropped the remote control and sat on the bed.

His words came to her again, vividly as if he was there, saying them. Have absolute faith in God, he had said. Could that really be the solution
to her marriage challenge? Would putting trust in God and serving him faithfully bring an end to the heart aches she had been having? Above all, would faith in God stop her husband's philandering?

She lay on the bed again and closed her eyes. Her mind went down the memory lane. Years back, she used to be a devoted Christian. As a matter of fact, during her undergraduate years, she was very fervent in serving God. She seriously believed in prayers then, and things seemed to be working out well.

Even up to the time she had met Biyi, she trusted God for directions. In those early years of marriage, he was still working for a firm, and had not made the kind of money he was still making now.

But it was a paradox that they were much happier then. There was harmony and great understanding the. He was very committed to her and would not do anything to hurt her feelings. Even when the children started coming, Biyi was a model family man.

Now, things had changed completely. Why had things become topsy-turvy as they seemed to be? Were they not supposed that be happier now? What had gone wrong?

Funmi was sober. Had she not backslidden? Had she not missed the way? When the wealth came, her perspectives too changed. With his gaining prominence and wealth, every thing changed. He became conceited while she became snobbish and impetuous. That was the beginning of the problem.

Money is good, no doubt. It answers many questions. It opens many doors, but it also digs many pits. Funmi could see clearly now how and where she had missed the point. Wealth without the fear of God is like a horse without bridle.

She must retrace her steps. Thank God it was not late. She would have to bring the old Funmi back - number necessarily the slim, beautiful Funmi, but the faithful, devoted soul. Oh God, please help me, she prayed. Not long after her resolutions, she fell into a deep, blissful sleep.

When she woke up in the morning, she felt very refreshed. It was a long time ago that she felt this refreshed. She remembered what she had decided during the night. There was no going back. It was already quarter after six in the morning. The maid must have woken the children up and be getting them ready for school.

Something struck her mind. She had virtually left the care of her children to the maid. Sometimes, she would not even see the children as they went off to school. After their bathing and dressing up, their breakfast would be ready. As soon as the meal was over, the driver would be ready to take them to school.

Her first daughter, Desire, always had the pocket money for herself and her sisters for the week with her. Funmi had felt there was no need to always see them before they left for school. Right now, she felt that was not good enough.

The children were surprised to see her in their bedroom.

'Good morning, children. Her greeting was warm and patronizing.

They chorused their answers.

Funmi decided to mention them one after another. 'Desire, Deola, Derin, how're you all?'

'Fine, mummy.' Each took turn to smile and answer. They were already wearing their crisp uniforms.

She assisted the youngest - nine-year old Derin - in tying the lace of her shoes. She then went downstairs with them to the dining table where their breakfast was already set.

Instead of spending two days in Ibadan as he had told her, they ended up spending four days in the city. Nancy was compensated generously. She felt she had not missed anything by being with him.

That Thursday evening, she alighted from his car in front of her residence.

'Wow.' Her face brightened with excitement. 'It was such an interesting trip.'

'Yeah, we really had a good time.' He smiled in agreement.

She picked her valise, kissed him good bye, got out of the car and moved towards the gate. Biyi waved to her as the car drove off.

She whistled to herself as she moved to her apartment on the first floor of the one-storey building. Hardly had she entered her flat when her
mobile phone rang.

It was Irene, her good friend that was on line.

'Hello, Irene. I just arrived home now.'

'Oh good,' Irene said. 'See, I'm in your neighbourhood. I'll soon come around to see you.'

'That will be nice. Let's meet and have the latest gists.' Nancy giggled.

'Okay, see you.'

The time was few minutes to seven in the evening. Nancy asked herself what she would have for dinner.

She went to the kitchen and opened the fridge. She decided to boil some beef sausages. She would take them with some juices. Bearing in
mind that her friend would soon be around, she made the meal for two people. She dished some for herself and was about to eat when Irene
came.

'Good to see you, Nancy.' Irene hugged her. 'Gosh, you're looking so fresh. See your skin. It looks so radiant.'

'Thanks. I'll take that as a compliment. How're you, Irene?'

'We dey as you left us. Do you have more of those sausages?'

'Sure. Go to the kitchen and help yourself.'

Irene went to the kitchen and scooped the remaining sausage in a plate. She rejoined her friend in the sitting-room.

'So, how was your Ibadan trip?'

Nancy smiled. 'It was exciting. Very exciting.'

'You can say that again.' Irene smiled at her. 'Even before you answered, I could read the answer all over your face.'

Nancy switched on the t.v. 'How's Philip?'

Philip was Irene's fiance. He too had travelled to Port Harcourt some days ago for a work the company that employed him sent him to do. He
was a civil engineer.

'He's fine but hasn't come back from his trip.'

'You must be missing him terribly.' Nancy sipped some juice.

They took their meal and their juice with relish as they conversed.

'Kind of.' Irene changed the topic. She didn't really feel like discussing Philip. 'Ehn, this your man, what are his plans for you?'

Nancy looked at her friend in confusion. 'What d'you mean, plans?'

'Does he have any marriage plans for you? Has he proposed?'

Nancy burst out laughing. 'Hey, you're forgetting something. You're forgetting that the man is married.'

Irene smiled and shook her head. 'No, I didn't forget anything. I didn't forget that he is married.'

Nancy stopped her laugh and stared at her friend. 'So, what are you talking about?'

Irene looked as serious as she could be. 'Being married does not mean he can't propose to you.'

'Seriously?' Nancy chuckled. 'And who wants to be a second wife?'

'Is being a second wife to such a man not better than being saddled with a young but unreliable and unsecured man?'

Nancy continued to stare at her friend. 'You don't mean all that you're saying, do you?'

'Of course, I mean it.' Irene was all-serious. 'Listen, if I were in your shoes, I will not let this opportunity to slip off. A man like Biyi provides
more security than all these whimsical, young men. I prefer one Biyi to ten Philips.'

Nancy clouded her face in concentration. Could Irene be making any sense? But ...

Nancy shook her head. 'Have you forgotten I told you about his wife? Have you forgotten I told you about how that woman accosted me at
the shopping mall and tore my clothes to pieces? Oh, come on, Irene.'

Irene was undeterred. 'That her angle can be settled. The important thing is if you can make the man to propose and take you to the altar.
The moment he's ready to do that, her aspect becomes immaterial. The moment she realizes that you're his wife, she will have no option than to
accept you.'

Nancy appeared to think over her friend's suggestion. There was silence for some seconds.

Irene went on: 'See what the man has offered you within a few months of the relationship. Those things are what some men could not offer
their women even in a life time. Imagine what will be in for you if you should become his wife.'

Nancy was thoughtful. Biyi had indeed been a source of indulgence for her. Even the last outing with the man had made the amount of money
in her bank account to swell up.

'If he doesn't want a second wife, the least you can do is to get pregnant for him.' Irene was wistful. She smiled.

'Just like that?'

Irene nodded conspiratorially. 'Just like that.'

The mini flat that the agent showed her was alright by her standard. Nana had decided to relocate far from Ade. She was however mindful that she must not live far away from where she worked. She had therefore decided to get a flat in the vicinity of Ogba, not far from Ikeja.

The agent told her the total costs of the rent, the agreement fee and the agency fee. In addition, she was also to pay for damages. The
agent said this was refundable, upon the fact that she did not damage any of the property in her care during tenancy.

Nana wanted to pay into the agency's account, but the man said he preferred cash.

'No problem. I will go and make withdrawal in the bank.' She reassured the man and left. Since the amount was a bit on the high side, the ATM
would not suffice and she would have to make the withdrawal in the banking hall. The agent said he would be expecting her.

Two hours later, Nana was back in the agent's office. She made the payments, collected the receipts and keys, and was ready to move in.
The interior of the flat needed repainting while the net door needed to be replaced.

She decided that whatever renovation she would make would wait until she had packed in. Latest by the following day, she wanted to pack
her things from Ade's house and move to her new place.

Not long after she got back to BestItems stores, her boss and employee, madam Funmi came around.

'Good afternoon, ma'am.' Nana stood up to greet.

'Good afternoon, my dear. How's everything today?'

Nana smiled. 'Everything is fine, ma'am.'

Funmi was all smiles. She appeared to be in a very good mood today. After Nana had given accounts of all transactions, she informed her boss
that she was about to relocate from Ketu to Ogba.

'You and your husband prefer Ogba?' Funmi asked.

'I'm not married, ma'am.' Nana would have blushed if she had white skin.

Funmi was surprised. 'Really? I thought you're married.'

'No, ma'am. I lived with a man, but were never married.' She smiled, but it was obvious it was an unhappy one.

Funmi was surprised. 'Really? I thought you're married.'

'No, ma'am. I lived with a man, but were never married.' She smiled, but it was obvious it was an unhappy one.

Again Funmi was surprised. 'And when are you planning to get married?'

Nana shook her head sadly. 'He and I are never going to be married. He has sent me out of his house.'

Funmi was astounded. 'What! For what? Why did he send you out?"

Nana smiled sadly again. It was always a sad episode anytime she had to narrate her experience. 'I guess we were not made for each other.
Well, it is well. I've decided to move on the to start afresh.'

Funmi sighed. Her expression conveyed sympathy. 'So, he just sent you packing like that? I'm sorry to hear this. Don't worry. Be strong. I'm
sure God has a greater plan for you.'

It was Nana's turn to be surprised. So, madam Funmi could talk like this; like a prophetess!

She thanked the madam for her concern and words of encouragement.

The afternoon of the following day which was a Friday, she chartered a cab that would convey her loads. She had already packed her clothes
in a big, black, leather box and two Ghana-must-go bags.

She also packed her plates, cutlery, pots and other utensils. There was still some soup in a pot. Nana decided to forgo that one. The gas
cooker belonged to him. She took only things that were hers.

She also decided to leave a note. In it, she thanked Ade for harbouring her for the past three years. She would start her life afresh, she
stated. She believed with the power of Christ, all would be well. She urged him too to sincerely embrace Christ.

Just before she left, the keys to his apartment were dropped with Iya Beji, the woman that sold soft drinks in one of the shops in the front part of the building.

After she had offloaded in her new abode, she went on her knees to pray to God. She once asked God to direct her steps. She had no doubt
that all would be well with her.

Funmi was watching the television with the children in the sitting-room when Biyi came in. Leke handed the briefcase to Sadiya to take to the
master's bedroom upstairs.

'Welcome, my dear.' Funmi as usual stood up to give him the customary peck.

He hugged her too. The children also held him briefly as they were delighted to see him.

He was only downstairs briefly as he soon left them to go and change upstairs. While he went up, Leke came to whisper some information to
her, but she stopped him.

'There will be no need for that again.' There was no acrimony in her action, and what she did was to his surprise. 'Let's leave all matters in the
hands of God.'

That was the last time Leke would make attempt to report Nancy or any lady to her.

Funmi soon went to the kitchen. 'Ask daddy what he would like to eat,' she instructed Sadiya.

The maid went up and soon returned.

'Daddy said he would like to take amala.' Sadiya went to bring out the pot that would be used for that.

With Funmi's close supervision, Sadiya prepared the food. Since that was what the head of the house wanted, every body would take the
meal.

They all ate together. The children did not mind the local delicacy. As a matter of fact, they liked it. After the dinner, Funmi was with the
children for some time before she decided to go to her husband's room. She met him watching the flat screen in his room.

'My darling husband.' There was a big smile on her face. She looked excited.

He smiled and turned to her. His mind raced. She had used the tactics before - anytime she needed something big from him.

'How're you, Funmi darling?'

'I'm fine.' She sat happily by his side. She didn't stop there. She soon had her hands round him in a warm embrace

What was on his mind was that the amount she needed must be on the very high side.

When she stopped the embrace, he stared into her eyes. 'How much do you need? I can see that this your show of love is not for nothing.'

What was on his mind was that the amount she needed must be on the very high side.

When she stopped the embrace, he stared into her eyes. 'How much do you need? I can see that this your show of love is not for nothing.'

Funmi looked surprised. 'I didn't say I needed anything.'

Now, he was surprised. 'You mean you don't need any money?'

She shook her head. 'If I need anything at all, it is not money.'

He nodded. 'If you need? 'What will that be?'

She smiled at him. 'It doesn't have to be money all the time. Let me whisper it to you. It's for your ears only.'

He corked his head to her side to listen as she whispered to him. Soon, he laughed.

'My dear wife, are you sure that is all you want?'

She smiled and nodded.

'Very well. It shall be done as you wish.'

A week after Nana moved to her new apartment, she had started becoming familiar with the new environment. She had fixed the net door and had repainted the interior of the flat. She would be needing many things such as furniture, bed, cooking gas, and so on. For now, she had bought two plastic chairs and a mattress she would be managing with.

She had also called her parents and friends that she had relocated. Her parents had heaved sigh of relief, urging her to be circumspect henceforth. Her good friend, Maria sympathized with her and enjoined her to be hopeful. As a matter of fact, Maria had got her address and had promised to visit her this weekend.

Thinking back, Nana believed things would turn out to be good. Madam Funmi too had shown a lot of concern. She asked her if she needed any
loan or salary advance. Despite replying in the negative, the madam gave her some money, and she called it a grant. Nana was very grateful.

Nana had not heard anything from Ade since she left his house. He had not called her, nor responded to the note that she left behind. She was
actually not expecting any reply from him. That was okay. She would have to put everything behind her and forge on with life. God would take
control.

It was late Sunday afternoon when Maria and her two-year old daughter came visiting. Nana welcomed them to her new home. They sat on the plastic chairs and chatted.

'It's good that you left,' Maria said. 'My spirit tells me it's okay that way. I believe God did not ordain the relationship, if not, things would not
turn the ways they have turned.'

Nana sighed. 'I believe so too.'

Maria was with her until dusk. Nana thanked her for the visit as she accompanied her to the bus stop. As Nana made her way back to her house, she thought of what she would eat that night. Since she still had soup, she could make Eba. It was not really easy to live alone, she had discovered, but she was fast adjusting.

That very Sunday evening, Ade was with Doris in his apartment. Doris had been with him since Friday evening but she would be going back to her house later this Sunday evening. Ade was delighted Nana was able to get her own place and leave him alone fast. When he had told Doris that Nana was no longer living with him, the latter had expressed surprise.

'So fast?' Doris had raised an eyebrow.

'Yes, so fast. Now, you're free to come to the house as much as you want.'

When Doris expressed the desire to spend the weekend with him, he had warmly welcomed the idea. He drove her home straight from the office
that Friday. It was easy for her as she had already packed the clothes she would need with her.
