Epsom salt as a foliar spray or soil additive will help tomato and pepper plants grow and produce larger, tastier yields.

Late in the season use an Epsom salt spray to increase tomato and pepper yield and keep plants green and bushy; early in the season add Epsom salt to the soil to aid germination, early root and cell development, photosynthesis, plant growth, and to prevent blossom-end rot.

Epsom salt is not actually salt but a natural mineral compound of about 10 percent magnesium and about 13 percent sulfur—often referred to as magnesium-sulfate. Epsom salt is highly soluble and easily taken in by plants when combined with water and sprayed on leaves. As a soil additive, Epsom salt becomes soluble with soil moisture and is drawn up into plants through the roots.

A magnesium or sulfur deficiency in the soil can cause tomato and pepper plants to grow small and spindly, leaves to yellow between leaf veins late in the season, and fruit to be slow in maturing and ripening.

Nice post, but I do have a different view about the use of Epsom salts. My opinion, it's totally unnecessary and its use is unfounded. Simply adding organic compost to the soil will give you all trace elements you need. And if you must add Epsom salt why not do soil test to know if magnesium is indeed before adding.

Please be aware that veggies find Epsom salt quite useful

For tomatoes and peppers, apply 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt granules around each transplant or spray (1 tbsp. per gallon) during transplanting and again following the first bloom and fruit set.

Okay, sorry to stress this further, but the use of epsom salt isn't necessary especially in a situation from the so called salt isn't deficient. Well, commercially you could argue that the land has been used over and over again, then again, use of organic compost will do just the trick.

I argue based on practical use of the so called epsom salt on my tomato plant, while the other batch was basically pure compost and maybe little supergo in a while and I can tell there was nothing spectacular about the Epsom salt.

Epsom salts contain magnesium and salt. Many plants suffer from excess salt in the soil. A form of Epson salts is used as a supplement in commercial agriculture where magnesium is deficient. While magnesium deficiency is an occasional problem for tomatoes in intensive agriculture situations, it would be highly unusual for a casual gardener to have this very specific type of deficiency. Why supply extra magnesium if it is not needed, especially if one runs the risk of creating other issues in the process?

nothing beats a good healthy soil with manure in it,it's a slow release fertilizer, balances the pH of the soil and also have all major nutrients and the remaining 13 trace elements necessary for a good yield.

Yes ooo my Oga patapata. Even if we have to make up for lost nutrients in the soil at least a soil test would help in guiding us on what to add and in what proportion. Not just adding everything buyable over the shelf grin . let's know what we are trying to address before buying. cool

When fertilizing your peppers, look for 5-10-10 fertilizer. This contains half as much nitrogen as phosphate and potassium. A higher phosphate and potassium number will encourage more fruit production. A lower nitrogen number will help the plant grow, without doing it at the expense of producing fruit.

Most granular fertilizers are applied at a rate of 1 1/2 pounds per 100 square feet. When fertilizing peppers with a granular type fertilizer, avoid letting the granules touch the plants. This may burn the plant and or have other adverse consequences. Instead, apply the granular fertilizer in a circle around the plants and water it in well.

Bought some chemical at federal ministry of Agriculture today... At very cheap price compared to what they sell at market, the difference between the price is up to 800# per bottle. What I use to buy 1700 was sold to me for 1043#.it is available across the nation, check your locality. Chemicals available are Herbicide, fungicide, insecticide etc.
They also sell pumping machine and some other farm implements.
If you can't get it in your area I can be of help.

Please, how can one know the location of the ministry in his/her locality? I'm in Lagos (Iyana-Ipaja axis), and currently having issue getting foliar fertilizer and NPK.

You ask around or you Google search. They don't sell fertilizer

Sure, like this pepper farming now you can't do it part time except you want to plant for your house consumption or you employ somebody to handle it on large scale. There's some plant that you can't just plant and come to check every weekend pepper , cucumber and cabbage are one of them . They are full time job plants.

I have received calls and complaints from readers and doers of experience shared on this forum. Some commended me ,while some said the hybrid seed that I recommended, which they also bought did not germinate after following what I shared. I have now decided to take up the challenge of raising the seedlings for intending farmers but limited space available, just 10 slots (a slot is 500 seedlings). I sell my previous seedlings for 70# but for this particular project I'm going sell for 30# per seedling .

ADDED ADVANTAGE

Each participants will collect:

500 healthy,high breed seedlings(avenir f1)

1 litre of insecticide that's good for pepper(worth 2k)free

1 litre of fungicide (worth 6k)free

A sachet of copper based fungicide (free)

Limited to only 10paticipants only.

If you're interested you can reach me on

A big thank you to the OP and every other contributor, its been educative and an atticle worth the time.

please I need ur view on the profitability and acceptability of 'big sun' variety of pepper in the market (presently nursing). I will appriciate if anyone can give the expected number of bags (50kg) one will harvest from 500 plants every 4 days and the present market price

Secondly can one nurse anytime of the year or only at specific periods

Thirdly how often do I need to wet my nursery before germination and after germination

Forthly how long (in years) can avaira F1 variety last provided one irregate in dry seasons

Fifth, those heaping of soil have any special advantage on pepper and what is it if dir be any?

am patiently waiting to learn from everybody.

thanks in anticipation.

your questions are very technical,Big sun I think is the next biggest fresh pepper variety after avenir, sometimes I think big sun could be an even better alternative to avenir, most times avenir is simply too big for most people's perspective of fresh pepper.1000 pepper plants will yield 5-7 bags(25kg) every 4 days,so you can work out 500 crops, you can nurse anytime of the year if you know your way,the worst time for pepper nursery is July-september, only real farmers can pull it off.you only wet if the topsoil is dry, while it's true that peppers can yield for 2 years, but to commercial farmers the first 4-5 months are just enough, that is when u get 70-90% production after that it will be declineing to 20-30%,not worth paying attention anymore, but seriously if you manage a pepper farm for 4-5 months production without serious issue, hmm!!you will surpass your target.heaping of soil to me is a sort of weed control and erosion measure.pepper is a dry season crop preferred hot dry weather with full sun blasting, than a cold clammy damp climate,I am just imagining the yield of avenir in dry season with drip irrigation,it will be a sight to see.

May God reward u guys a million times. Pls, @okoroemeke/ogbognet Does pepper need to be sprayed insecticide weakly like cukes. If

You don't need to spray every week once you make use of systemic chemicals .any copper based fungicide is OK.you can start spraying a week or two after transplanting depending on the type of seed planted(hybrid or opv). You can apply manure to the land before and after planting.Fertilizer after two weeks of transplanting.

thank u bro for d eye opening packaging stuff. currently i hv issue with how to go about mine ,my nursery is due for transplanting, the nursery site(my home) to my farm is about 3 hours drive. i first did nursery in the farm to avoid stressing them during transit but it was set ablaze by unknown being, that is why i did another at home to secure it. i wl attached d pix of d burnt nursery n d new nursery later.

pls educate me more about d processes involved as to reduce over stressing d plants during transit.
secondly, permit me to ask d following question:
>with ur packaging, how many hours/days can d seedlings spend b4 planting?
>since u are transporting to PHC, which state/town is ur nursery located?
>is it advisable to uproot them by evening, say 6pm, package them and move them to farm d following morning?this is to to enable us start planting early b4 sun shines, cos we are planting close to 2 acres. it is more of tomato, pepper should be around 1,000.
