A Chinese company registered and produces in South Africa is a south African company.

PZ that is registered and manufactures in Nigeria is a Nigerian company.

DUFIL Prima Foods Plc, makers of indomie noodles is a Nigerian company and is qualified for free trade (duty exemption ) in a free trade agreement.

If free trade is that beneficial to all countries, what did the US pull out of TPP? Why is the UK pulling out of the EU?

The main fear with the African Free Trade idea is that China can set up a mega production company in one country and dominate the whole region.
Lol,u asked a very good question. Why did US pull out of PTT&UK out of EU.The basic truth is that countries take decisions base on interest.US did enclosure for yrs to enable her develop internally. After it had massively built her industries and producing more than internal consumption, they started preaching free trade and liaize fair to flood other countries with their guds, even changing govts in countries for their selfish aims.Aftr enjoyn these benefits,US has reached a point where the curve is heading downward.High labour cost, labor law, high interest rate, employees right etc,Investors left US for her neighbor like Mexico and now China. The big cities companies in US r shadow of themselves same wt UK.So to bring back these companies into production US must pull out of some agreement.Once d companies start working American will be employed,d ppl will open more bank acct, health insurance, mortgage, eduction etc.US wants to start producing more useable cars.Once everytin starts workn fine,US will be d one 2 preach&enforce free trade.Under Abacha we had better deal because Nigeria was suspended from many global bodies which gave us opportunities 2 enclose&produce for Africa use.China did enclosure on Mao,after internally developing it self, she change policies and began going out.Nigeria must look imward, develop her local industries, feed her niegbors with guds before thinking of going out.International politics is local first before being international, that s its interest at home that matters. If Nigeria has rejected d agreement, then what r we doing to improve our production capacity.

The understatement of the millenia. Skill is everything.
Skill aka manpower is the most important and I say most expensive of the factors for production, industrialization and development. Countries like Japan and Switzerland has only manpower as their most important resource. In many climes, it is a crime not to send your child to school.

The reason Africa is poor is not because it lacks natural resources, but because it lacks skilled manpower. The earlier we take education serious and invest massively in skills and education, the earlier we get out of poverty.
what I was just trying to say is that skill by itself it won't work, you need a good platform of where to use your skill. e.g Nigeria has many skilled IT people, but because there is no good platform they moved to South Africa.
But if the platform could be created, most of the people will learn the skill and work at nigeria.

Trump sadly is a protectionist and is doing damage to the American economy. Economic growth last year was 2.9% instead of the 3% + expected and the prime culprit was Trump's trade war. Nigeria should not follow that route.

The truth is free trade will force the country to sit up. There's no choice.

Also, there are areas the country has comparative advantage despite poor infrastructure. Nigerian manufactured goods are found throughout West and Central Africa. Rumour has it up to Zimbabwe. That shows things are not as despondent as they seem.

Daily, buyers from West Africa besiege the markets in Lagos Island and leave with lorry loads of goods. Same with agricultural products. They besiege the Northern states leaving with trailers loads of foodstuff.

To say the country lacks comparative advantage in some areas is therefore not entirely true.

Also,a Free Trade Agreement may encourage the setting up of industrial parks with dedicated power 24houra a day and other amenities. Companies based in these parks will therefore have a competitive edge.

Smart states or even investors can set such induatrial parks in their states. The more the better.

The biggest benefit will be that Niàgerian companies are forced to be competitive and focus on areas they have comparative advantage,. At the end if the day, it will encourage an export push outside African shores which is desperately needed. Only, when Nigeria does that, can it bring about the needed transformation from third world to first world.

Also, it will compel government to target the most expensive expense or cost which is that if credit. Credit is unnecessarily high considering fiscal deficits rarely go beyond 2% of GDP. Lending rates and inflation have always been in double digits.

The high cost of credit has scared off investments in the manufacturing sector and in the real sectors altogether. It has also led to low productivity. which makes manufacturers uncompetitive.

I can see Nigeria doing well in textile garments for instance. It can import cheap textile fabrics from other African countries and turn them into garments. These garments will not only be exported to other African countries but outside African shores as well Nigeria with it's 200m people will have an edge in labour intensive factories like these

And if the country is making headway in garments, they will be compelled to set up fabric plants in order to achieve quick turnarounds to meet targets set by their buyers based in Europe and America.

I foresee Chinese manufacturers setting up shop enmasse here and creating lots of jobs now that wages have shot through the roof in China and the easiest way for their manufacturers to remain competitive is to set up factories in low wage countries like Nigeria. Factory Asia on our doorsteps.
Let us think critically.

Where do you think Chinese companies will set up?

In a country that guarantees 24/7 power supply or with a country that experiences only 2 - 4 power supply in a day? Think

You said states should create industrial estate with 24/7 power supply. Are the state constitutionally empowered to generate and sell energy? Think

Do you realise the Chinese are already playing a significant role in manufacturing sector. Their factories are all over Ogun state. It is reported that one of their foundries exported 200,000tons of steel.

The Chinese will set up factories. What did I say wrong?

Also, concerning what I said about industrial parks, the power sector can be liberalised further to allow what I said.

It's not far fetched. Fashola when governor signed a PPA with a company to supply Iju waterworks exclusively with power. It's nothing new.

State does not have power to sell energy. I don't know how you missed that.

Most companies are relocating to Ghana or opening in Ghana because of epilepsy power supply here and constant power supply there.

Those Chinese companies set up here because their target is the NIGERIAN market hence can't operate outside Nigeria due to trade restrictions. Think

Once the free trade agreement is signed, it's very easy for them to close their business here and open outside NIGERIA if power supply is not resolved.

The point is, power supply should be resolved first before we start talking about free trade agreement.

As long as NIgerians still thinks that they are inferior to Chinese, Nigeria is not going anywhere. why are Nigerians afraid of Chinese like that. if china opens company in Ghana is fine, Chinese company will pay tariffs in Ghana and those tariffs they will cause chinese company products to be expensive compared to products from other African companies.

The search for an excuse is always successful.

Just start! The constraints would force the government to act.

Many countries in the EU have huge handicaps that can just be as bad as the poor power supply that plagues the country.

In Germany for instance, power is very expensive. In France, the rigid labour market is a serious headache, making employing workers quite expensive and sacking them difficult.

Despite these challenges, Germany is not only the industrial giant in Europe and it's biggest economy but also it's largest exporter. Exports make up 50% of it's economy.

Why I chose the EU is that it is the largest single market in the world. Products from France or Germany will go to other member states duty free and the reverse as well

The funny thing is that the biggest challenge Nigerian companies face isn't poor power supply but very costly credit. Borrowing cost of 20% or more is a massive disincentive to investment.

Industrial parks with 24 hour electricity can be built. It isn't far-fetched. They are planning to make the Lagos Free Trade Zone have 24hour power.with similar arrangements.

Nigerian must sign free deal so that our brotherly country south africa can control our econony than our economy been controlled by countriesthat are not african.

In each and every sector Nigerian market is dominated by South African companies.
how do you control Ghana, does Ghana people use Naira. their currency is even better than yours.
Accra is better than Lagos.
Nigeria has no multinational corporates.
Be serious, nigeria is no where near controlling other countries, it must start by learning to control Nigeria first.
Also in all west african countries south african companies are dominating.

Nigeria is struggling because of visionless and incompetent leadership and docile followership.

You don't discarded a system and start a new one when it's not working properly, you identify the faults and make corrections. Over time the system will get better.

You need to produce competitively to enable you trade (freely) with others, else you will kill the very production base you are trying to help.
