Depends on the bank. UBA for example asks for pin when transferring with sim card. Banks like GTB or so don't ask for anything at all. They just authenticate the transaction without any security measure.

Yes, your sim is all fraudsters need to withdraw money from your account.
Your money would have been saved if you had first called your banks to block your accounts before blocking your sim.

On the first of April 2019, I boarded an intra-city vehicle and dropped at my destination unaware that a guy sitting beside me in the bus had stolen my phone from my pocket. The bus I boarded had picked the guy on the way and he sat next to me. I had no inkling at all that he had the intention of picking my pocket though something told me that this guy's way 'no pure' as he was casting uncanny and surreptitious glances towards my direction, with a weird look on his face. Little did I know he was busy with my pocket.

It was several minutes after I had alighted at my destination that I realised that my smartphone was missing from my pocket. I used a friend's phone to dial my number and found out that the criminal had already switched it off. I resigned to fate knowing fully well that my chances of getting back the phone was slim. I however kept dialling my number till evening, it was still switched off. 6 AM in the morning of 2nd April I dialled my number again and it was ringing but wasn't picked up at the other end. After a few more attempts, the rogue switched off the phone again.

I decided to contact MTN that day to block the line, which they did. However, to my chagrin, when I went to the ATM that same morning to make a withdrawal, I found out the my account balance had changed and that the criminals have succeeded in withdrawing some thousands of Naira from my account. I rushed inside the bank immediately and blocked the account.

What I am still dazed about is how it's possible for criminals to withdraw money from someone's bank account just by getting hold of the sim card. Mind you, my phone can only be accessed via a PIN, so the possibility of them making a transfer using my bank's mobile app is ruled out. So how did they do it?

Has anyone ever been victim of such? Please share so others can learn.

Mods, can you please move to front page so others can learn? Thanks.
All they need to do is removed your sim from your phone, next time don't only password your phone also password your sim... they only have 3 attempt before the line is block.

He probably make use of USSD to transfer your money

Had the same experience early year. The thieves managed to steal 32k from my account.

I've since learnt that the first thing to do after such theft to block your line. Then contact your bank to block your account as well.
First thing is to call your banks to block all transactions pending till you replace your stolen sim.

Probably the first reasonable comment! Failed system with adults with blocked minds everywhere. Someone asked how all Nigerian adults could say were sorry! So disappointing. One even asked how much dem steal wey the OP dey make noise... So sad. Thumbs up, author of the quote below. You're just one of the reasonable few in the land.

Yes it's possible to steal from your account.
Even without knowing the password, some clever social Engineering can supply the attacker all details to steal.

These days, your phone is your second identity, especially when it's part of your multifactor authentication on several platforms.

My people, you need to learn to be devious in all your ways. Street University is the ultimate Ivy League University.

- Don't register a phone number with your bank's ussd system (go to your bank and order them to unlink/deregister your number from ussd services!)
- My alerts only come in via email.
- I don't have a bank app, and not registered to any bloody app.
- Online transactions are strictly on the bank's website or Quickteller.
- No software tokens (OTP) whatsoever. Only hardware token, etc, etc.

* If you follow these standard precautions, even if your phone is stolen, your Sim card will be totally useless to any potential 'account clearer'. 100% guaranteed.

My people perish for lack of knowledge, but it's okay.

Happy Birthday to you. Your liberality is admirable, however when next you ever let your head down, please, please, please let it be not just to only and alone admire your shoes, but to lift and bring a knocked down on the floor, brother or sister up. You are beautiful inside and outside.

Password protect your SIM. It's very easy to do.
They try the code multiple times, sim gets locked and the only way to access the sim is to enter the PUK number.

There is no way someone can withdraw money from your account by having your phone.

How will the person know your account number and bank you bank with. They can only do that if you have a bank mobile app and automatic pin on it or a phone number verification.

A volatile country like Nigeria, I will be the last person that will have a mobile money app on my phone.
