On the first of April 2019, I boarded an intra-city vehicle and dropped at my destination unaware that a guy sitting beside me in the bus had stolen my phone from my pocket. The bus I boarded had picked the guy on the way and he sat next to me. I had no inkling at all that he had the intention of picking my pocket though something told me that this guy's way 'no pure' as he was casting uncanny and surreptitious glances towards my direction, with a weird look on his face. Little did I know he was busy with my pocket.

It was several minutes after I had alighted at my destination that I realised that my smartphone was missing from my pocket. I used a friend's phone to dial my number and found out that the criminal had already switched it off. I resigned to fate knowing fully well that my chances of getting back the phone was slim. I however kept dialling my number till evening, it was still switched off. 6 AM in the morning of 2nd April I dialled my number again and it was ringing but wasn't picked up at the other end. After a few more attempts, the rogue switched off the phone again.

I decided to contact MTN that day to block the line, which they did. However, to my chagrin, when I went to the ATM that same morning to make a withdrawal, I found out the my account balance had changed and that the criminals have succeeded in withdrawing some thousands of Naira from my account. I rushed inside the bank immediately and blocked the account.

What I am still dazed about is how it's possible for criminals to withdraw money from someone's bank account just by getting hold of the sim card. Mind you, my phone can only be accessed via a PIN, so the possibility of them making a transfer using my bank's mobile app is ruled out. So how did they do it?

Has anyone ever been victim of such? Please share so others can learn.

Mods, can you please move to front page so others can learn? Thanks.

Your phone can only be accessed by punching pins that is fine but can your SIM card too be accessed by pressing pins ? Because he could have removed your SIM card to another phone to carry out transfers on your account using those short codes.

no need to ask how the money was withdraw because is a simple stuff, what the pick pocket did was to buy airtime directly using your sim. you know banks dont require pin to buy airtime and if the dude is smart enough he or she can just buy airtim, create a transfer pin and start wireing.

As a good forensic investigator I can then trace all the accounts that received the loot in less than 30 minutes.
The. Working with d police we will grab him in less than 12 hrs and his sorry ass will be left to rot in kirikiri maximum prison.

Where then is the smartness in stealing what is not yours in the first place.

Yes, it is possible with your BVN especially if you use Access Bank. Next time, quickly get a friend's phone and hotlist your account.

You can get back ur money and also no d person dat withdrew ur money, mind u, d money was not withdrawn but transferred.
STEP 1. Go to ur bank, to d customer care units, demand to no ur account manager, they will ask u why u need no c him/her but insist on ur point(they won't easily disclose d person in charge)
STEP 2. Ask him/her to give u d details of ur account activities if u were able to meet him/her in person
STEP 3. Treat to query him/her if its not disclosed(I'm such a way he/she will tell u d account to which ur money was transferred to, name, method of transfer, all details of the recipient)
STEP 4. Go to court n obtain court order
STEP 5. Write to CBN n also copy ICPC, EFCC as a quarry n in ur query, give dem an time to which u want ur money return n d culprit brought to book, treat dem u will drag dem dem to court(remembere u already have ur court order with u)
I bet u, u won't even b slow to leave d office either with ur lawyer or even if u went alone, deh will beg u n credit u immediately n collect ur account details for investigation (if u take it too high, some staffs in ur bank may loose der job especially ur bank manager, RCO of d branch u opened account with n d BSM on ground).
Don't doubt diz analysis, do its a long process n stressful but believe me, u will get ur cash back, even in multiples. I currently work as an investigation officer with EFCC.

There is no way someone can withdraw money from your account by having your phone.

How will the person know your account number and bank you bank with. They can only do that if you have a bank mobile app and automatic pin on it or a phone number verification
don't be too sure bro! even without a mobile app or bank alerts on your phone, even without knowing your PIN your account can be wiped clean! in fact in certain cases, the f.o.ols don't even need your phone sef!

Depends on the bank. UBA for example asks for pin when transferring with sim card. Banks like GTB or so don't ask for anything at all. They just authenticate the transaction without any security measure.

I use gtb and every transaction I am asked to insert my pin so you are wrong about gtb

Cos it's with d line/phone they used in making all the transfers.;and for some of us that have more than one account;before u run from one bank to another with all the protocols;money don transfer finish. So blocking d line is smarter.

Just report to your bank.. they would track the account number that the money was sent to..

Next time lock your sim and know ur account officer's number so that whenever something like this happens like u discover your phone has been stolen, you can quickly call them to block your account.

These criminals are like syndicates and they usually have insiders working in banks that make it possible to steal funds from a victim's account using their numbers attached to your bank account and your bvn..

So for some future security tips to stay safe next time, try to implement the following..

1- Lock your sim card with your sim to make it harder for these criminals to have access to your sim where they can dial a code to get your bvn number and also dial your bank's ussd code to initiate a bank transfer.

2- Know your bank's officers number.. Every account has a bank officer attached to it, so contact customer agent to get your bank officer's number so you can quickly call them whenever your phone is stolen for your account to be blocked.

3- Always delete every bank information from your phone like bank account numbers stored in your message inbox tru bank transaction alerts, or anywhere you stored bank information or login details that u cant remember off-head. Try learn to memorize your login details and if you must store sensitive details in your phone, try using a strong third party app to store them.

4- Lock all your bank apps with a password and even your message inbox, lock your email app and lock all sensitive areas of your phone... This can be done using third-party apps usually found on google play store for free and top ones for a fee. Also put a lock on your phone to make it harder for criminals and hackers to crack. (dont forget to use very strong combination passwords).

5- Always have a seperate accounts if you have too much money where u have no atm card or app attached to it so that you transfer the bulk of your cash to them.. These criminals usually use atms used for online transactions to hack into people's account and steal funds..

6- Try have an online web-based account for your bank account where u can randomly log into and transfer your cash to another relative's account before these criminals strike before you can do anything to safe your funds from been stolen.

7- Most importantly, report this issue to the bank cos they ought to bear some responsibilities for the loopholes used by criminals to steal money from their customer's bank account using just the victim's sim especially first bank that doesnt have an extra pin for USSD operations.. Infact its because Nigerians have little knowledge of their rights, if not many of these bank should have been sued big time for this rampant case of stolen funds due to their weak security.

A friend of mine was robbed at gunpoint and had her phone stolen and within 4 hours all the money in her account was wiped. She reported to her bank and ther promised to track the account where the stolen funds was transferred to and today she just called to inform me that the owner of that account had been tracked down and she will be receiving back her money..

So I hope you do the same thing..

I wrote this piece in haste in case there are typo errors, i just hope you can still comprehend all i have written.

I hope these tips would be of help to you, Sorry for what happened..

These are some links to read up on how these criminals perpetuate these acts of account theft through various methods one of which is popularly known as sim swap.

So u can learn more..

Totally not true. Even if they get ur BVN, they cannot access your funds. This has been explained many times. P

The following excerpt provide some clues about how money was transferred from your account.

HOW TELEPHONE ROBBERS NOW STEAL MILLIONS FROM BANK CUSTOMERS’ ACCOUNTS
....
Different banks in the country have unique USSDs through which their customers can access mobile banking quickly. The USSD channel is, however, many of the ways exploited by phone robbers to fleece their victims of money in their bank accounts. This is done through electronic transfer of money from the victims’ bank accounts to bank accounts belonging to the robbers or members of their syndicate or purchase of items, including recharge cards, electronics and sundry items from online stores.

To be sure that a victim has money in his account, the robber would first remove the Sim card and insert it in another phone and make a purchase of a recharge card as low as N100. Once the balance on the bank account is received on the phone number indicating there is enough money in the account, the thieves would proceed to make further transfers or purchases and clean out the money left in their victims’ bank accounts.

For example, Awosika’s N558,000 was spent by the robber to purchase recharge cards through 30 different telephone numbers. In the case of Aremu, the robbers bougth N100 and N500 worth of recharge cards in quick succession and went on to transfer a sum of N29,000 to a Skye Bank account owned by a member of the syndicate.

“After I gained access to the phone, I bought recharge cards worth N600 and I was able to know the balance on the GTBank’s account number of the phone’s owner and I immediately transferred N29,000 to my account with Skye Bank.

“I do not need to know the victim’s password on the phone or Personal Identification Number for me to have access to victims’ accounts and transfer money to my account or buy recharge cards. Most victims password their phones not Sim cards. So, once I removed the Sim and put it in my own phone, I would have easy access to the Sim. I do not also need to know the PIN of my victim; all I need is the last digits of the victim’s Bank Verification Number (BVN), which I can easily obtain by dialling *556*0# and it would be revealed on the phone,” said one of the suspects involved in Aremu’s case, Oluwatobi, a graduate of Electrical/Electronics Engineering.

Also, syndicates who specialise in robbing people of their mobile phones and emptying their bank accounts also use computer applications to generate the BVN and bank details of their customerrs working in concert with fraudulent bankers.

This was evident in the case of a six- member gang paraded by the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Imohinmi Edgal, on February 20, 2018 during which the suspects who specialised in stealing phones/Sim cards and using them to hack the owners’ bank accounts disclosed their mode of operation.

The suspects, Nwanze Ifeanyi, 27, Martin Achi, 27, Solomon Dike, 31, Muritala Mohammed alias Swallow, Ali Hassan, 27, and Shamson Mustapha, 25, were paraded at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja,.

They said they were responsible for stealing phones and Sim cards, which they handed over to their gang leader, Swallow. Mohammed said he normally sent short codes to the service providers through the stolen Sim cards to generate the Bank Verification Number (BVN) and the account numbers of the owners.

He said: “Once it is the number registered with the bank, the details will appear on the phone and we would use it to hack into the person’s account. We generate PIN (Personal Identification Number) and do instant transfers from been doing this for over eight months now and I have made money from it.

“I have made over N300,000. It’s not true that we have made over a million. It’s not up to that. I used to give the guys who steal the phones, Sim cards small change. I used to tell them the thing did not click. I paid the motorcyclist (Dike) N3,000 each time he took them out to steal phones.

“But I usually gave 30 percent of the amount transferred to those who provided their account numbers for that purpose. Everyone knew what was going on except Mustapha. He was not part of the deal. He’s just a friend of Hassan.”

Nowadays you can block your ATM card the moment you notice that it is stolen.

Next we can simply do not enable internet use with the banks. As long as you cannot do online transactions with your account, no one can steal from you.

Please everyone must be careful with their phones especially the ones used for banking. We have seen the crooks arrested by police confessing that all they need is the Sim card. They now have softwares that they can use to generate ATM card details, clone the cards and rob innocent people.

God will help us all in thia country.
