I just tried it and my SIM locked asking me to input PUK.
Within seconds my body was covered with sweat as I remembered the stress people go thru doing court affidavit just to unblock SIM.
Luckily for me after ransacking the whole house I was able to see my SIM pack
lol, I've mentioned that on my last line naw...

I had no inkling at all that he had the intention of picking my pocket though something told me that this guy's way 'no pure' as he was casting uncanny and surreptitious glances towards my direction, with a weird look on his face. Little did I know he was busy with my pocket.

It was several minutes after I had alighted at my destination that I realised that my smartphone was missing from my pocket. I used a friend's phone to dial my number and found out that the criminal had already switched it off. I resigned to fate knowing fully well that my chances of getting back the phone was slim. I however kept dialling my number till evening, it was still switched off. 6 AM in the morning of 2nd April I dialled my number again and it was ringing but wasn't picked up at the other end. After a few more attempts, the rogue switched off the phone again.

I decided to contact MTN that day to block the line, which they did. However, to my chagrin, when I went to the ATM that same morning to make a withdrawal, I found out the my account balance had changed and that the criminals have succeeded in withdrawing some thousands of Naira from my account. I rushed inside the bank immediately and blocked the account.

What I am still dazed about is how it's possible for criminals to withdraw money from someone's bank account just by getting hold of the sim card. Mind you, my phone can only be accessed via a PIN, so the possibility of them making a transfer using my bank's mobile app is ruled out. So how did they do it?

Has anyone ever been victim of such? Please share so others can learn.

Mods, can you please move to front page so others can learn? Thanks.
Bro it's very possible for the syndicates to use your active sim card to make transfer from your bank account. Earlier this year the Nigerian police, I think in Lagos paraded some criminals that are specialized in that kind of thing. I watched them on TVC news. So we all need to stay focus and vigilant always.
The first thing after you lost your phone is to block the line.

Yes now, people are not saying the truth of the whole thing, how can someone know your BVN and use it to withdraw someone money in the bank. There no way someone can withdraw money from someone account by stealing the person phone except if you have your bank details on the phone and which serious person in useless country like Nigeria will go and store his or her bank details on the phone, when you no dey mad.

1).How will the person know your bank
2).How will he know your account number
3). How will he know your name
With just BVN he withdraws, na so bank dey operate abi na wetin.
Bro, dial *904# on your phone and see the list of banks connected to your phone number.
The thief probably did a massive top-up

Is it possible for one to password sim without its pack?
Have your pack for your puk number incase you mistakenly enter the wrong pin. Going to the MTN office to retrieve a puk number is stressful

But USDD will ask for pin number. How did he withdraw without the pin?
Not all banks o, UBA is the only bank I know their USSD security is tight... I've once tried it on friend phone, it when through even though it asked for password I insert a wrong password it went through... it was almost 30 minutes before the reverse back

Sorry to hear about your plight. Indeed the criminals were able to unlock your phone using phone unlocking software. They were able to withdraw money from your account because you saved your password in the bank's mobile app in your phone. Please people, NEVER, EVER SAVE YOUR PASSWORD IN THE APPLICATION. Set the application so that each time you want to withdraw money, it asks for your password. Otherwise, your money is not safe.

First of make sure you still have your SIM pack, because of the PUK no the sim pack.

go to your phone settings under security, you'll see SIM card lock, set up a password [It might likely give you error] you tried it 3 times, your SIM will be block, then you use the PUK on your sim pack to unblock and set a new password....

Don't try it if you've lost your sim pack...

Banking apps don't ask to save password...you must input the password or PIN anytime you launch the app. All banking apps even have extra security features that logs out a user after a certain amount of inactivity. No bank will deploy an app that ask to save login details. Once again, pipo base that facts in common sense and it's wrong

Depends on the bank. UBA for example asks for pin when transferring with sim card. Banks like GTB or so don't ask for anything at all. They just authenticate the transaction without any security measure.
That's not true GTB ask for pin (4 digit pin)

Maybe you saved your pin on your phone or he knows your pin, it's very difficult for one to withdraw money from one's account through the mobile app.

If your SIM card is password and your phone is password, when such incident happens their first target is removing your sim from the phone since they can't access phone... they'll inside your sim into another phone, in the process where your sim was passworded, once they on the phone your SIM it'll demand for password... if they make 3 attempt the SIM will automatically block itself, it can only be unlock with your PUK...
Ok
Clear now

You still be learner nah. Criminality is advancing everyday. They did same to my colleague in the office. After stealing his phone, mind you, that's the number he uses to receive alerts, that's also the number connected to his 2 bank accounts; they started transferring money from the first account into his phone as airtime. ₦3000, ₦5000, ₦10,000 till the first account finished. Then they did the same thing on the second account till everything went red. They transferred all the airtime into their own phone, mission accomplished. They don't need to unlock your phone to do that, they only need to insert your sim in another phone and use your bank USSD code. Best safety measure when you lose your phone is, call customer care and your bank ASAP and request that they block your line and account.

How did you know that the guy that sat beside you was the culprit?

You didn't state anywhere in your story that you had any conversation with the said guy before and after the phone got lost. So, how did you reach the conclusion that it was the guy that stole it?

Sorry that I couldn't answer your question. It is just that I had questions of my own.

He used used ussd, to recharge your stolen line via top up, up to 20 to 30k or thereabouts, which doesn't need password, then he sold the credit to another line,

President Muhammed Buhari sent his condolence to the family of the (deceased) kolade Johnson. who was shot by the police sars on march 31, 2019 in Lagos.

The President said: The recent unfortunate action of SARS operatives from the Lagos State Police Command, which led to the avoidable death of Mr. Kolade Johnson, is deeply regretted. Once again, our condolences to the family of the deceased. I’m aware the Police authorities have visited them.

One sim is linked to all my bank acc and I dont take the phone out its @home 24/7.
Secondly one of my account is loaded but I dont use ATM with it. I transfer funds to one of the empty account that has ATM which I move with.
