Walter Onnoghen, embattled chief justice of Nigeria (CJN), did not deliver his resignation letter in person, according to NAN.

TheCable had reported that Onnoghen tendered his resignation on Thursday.

Quoting sources, NAN said the letter was submitted to Abba Kyari, chief of staff to the president, by some judges of the supreme court.

The agency said the letter got to Aso Rock at the time the president had departed the country to participate in the World Economic Forum holding in Jordan.

NJC had recommended Onnoghen for compulsory retirement after deliberating on a petition by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) which alleged “financial impropriety, infidelity to the constitution and other economic and financial crimes related laws”.

Onnoghen, who denied all allegations, is also undergoing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) .

He has closed his defence at the CCT and the tribunal is expected to give its judgment at its next sitting on April 15.

Onnoghen, 69, was born in Kruiku town, Biase local government area of Cross River state.

He got his Law degree from the University of Ghana, Legon, in 1977 before his BL certificate at the Nigerian Law School in 1978.

He started his career as a Pupil State Counsel at the Lagos state ministry of justice in 1979, after which he ventured into private practice.

He was billed to resign on December 22, 2020, upon the attainment of the age of 70.

My problem with this guy is he should have resigned honourably and saved himself this embarrassment.

They say you can't fight two entities; God and the Govt but what do I know!

Office of the chief of staff handles all official communication to the presidency, it's the standard protocol everywhere even if he Was around.

Before Piglets form another conspiracy theory around Abba kyari doing his job.

If Nigeria was a serious country, they would follow due process and dismiss him without any retirement benefit, to send strong message to police and judges that we dont condone bribery

Let's not bring tribe into this. There are many judges who are on the take, like Onnoghen. And some of them are from your own tribe.

Well, the man has resigned.

I can't say that I am happy about it though. On the one hand, it is a good thing. You cannot have funny sources of income as a judge...especially as a Supreme COurt judge.

On the other hand, this thing has too many politcal undertones for it to look good. Yes, he did wrong, but the government's motives for prosecuting him are very iffy to say the least.

Then there is the tribe issue. Onnoghen's removal is seen...rightly or wrongly, as a means of putting the South on the back foot. As much as I hate tribal considerations in appointments...I prefer that the most qualified chap gets the job...and the acting CJN is very qualifed for the job...but the reality is we live in a tribal society. Jobs, etc are often a function of who you know, and sadly, we don't have an active private sector...so it's the public sector...and it is man know man.

In conclusion, I hope it won't be too much to ask if this means that similar cases of corrupt judges would be prosecuted, not just one poltically tainted case. I also hope that we train more honest judges, and strenghten our institutions. Thank you

I wish for the president to refuse his resignation. So that he can be dismissed and dragged as a deterrent to others.

That man should be made a scape goat to his fellow NJC members that has given him a soft landing not because they pitty him but because most of them see him as a mirror image of themselves.

They’re setting a precedence for themselves to also have a soft landing in case they find themselves in such situation in the future.

The president also needs to set a precedence for future presidents that corrupt judges should and would be dragged through the mud.

It’s time we stop this useless tradition of protecting high profile corrupt individuals just because he’s the CJN or Senate president or the president.

Let us set a precedent that a CJN or anyone can and would be dragged for corruption if found wanting.

Goalpost shifting as always.

What happened to onoghen is rugged and rather go to jail than be stampeded out of office, don't tell me he was bribed because he resisted the whole CCB process at first and later went all out to keep his position.

Seems it was even the njc that even hammered him more lol

This is what happens when you have a SAN,a constitutional lawyer and a Professor as a vice president. Osinbajo really knows his onions. The action of the President was not rushed at after all. It means the presidency originally checked the pros and cons before undertaken the suspension of the former CJN. This is a life lesson for the NBA, the Judiciary, the Senate and the Nigerian masses at large.
