In UK and probably wider Europe after the marriage dissolves or ends in divorce then generally the financially stronger person is asked to support the financially weaker person. Well, like I said... alimony is an American concept and everybody knows that Americans have a culture which promotes Sueing everyone for everything... even ex-partners or spouse. This article from an American newspaper only serves to prove how ridiculous of a concept

In UK and Europe it’s generally not done in the same way, something such as that article would never be passed by a court if the judge can clearly see it’s not a plausible sum to pay.
