This bill is somewhat more or less of what is obtainable already except the period of extension which is 2 months, but I don't think it will cause any real effect because almost all burial fall within the said limits in the bill

I believe this is a good move. Some people cry when relations die not because of the dead but because of the inherent expenses that follows. I applaud this.

This is a welcome development. It will attract Foreign Direct Investment in casket industry in the state, as many people will decide to die due to cheap burials. This is the greatest thing APGA Government has done for the State.

The Anambra State House Of Assembly has passed a bill that seeks the reduction in the expenses of organising funeral and burial rites in the state, and to prosecute offenders.

Sponsored by Hon. Charles Ezeani, the member representing Anaocha 11 constituency, the bill was passed after due consideration by House during Wednessday's plenary session.

The just passed bill provides that in the event of death, no person shall deposit any corpse in the mortuary or any place beyond two months from the day of the death.

The bill also noted that from the commencement of the law, no person shall subject any relation of the deceased person to a mourning period of more than one week from the date of burial ceremony.

Apart from the number of days recommended for burial ceremonies, the bill equally frowns on other flamboyant means of celebration that may cause destruction of property, gunshots, praise-singing, blocking of roads and streets during burial ceremonies; it also states that defaulters shall be punished in accordance with the law.

It further states that burial ceremonies in the state shall be for one day.

The bill further stipulates that during burial and funeral ceremonial activities, the family of the deceased shall provide entertainment for their kindred, relatives and other sympathizers at their own discretion.
And we are yet to get a bill prohibiting high bride price.

Speaking further on the signifance of the  bill, Charles Ezeani, the sponsor of the bill who represents Anaocha 2 Constituency, maintained that the bill also made provision for a monitoring and implementation committee that would enforce the law as well as their responsibilities.

The lawmaker described  the bill as "an important and great achievement by the 6th Anambra Assembly", as it had put to rest the high cost of burial and funeral activities in the state.

Rita Maduagwu, Speaker of the Assembly, commended the lawmakers on the quick passage of the bill, saying it would "moderate burial expenses in the state".

A similar bill is needed in Edo State because pf one of the Ishan communities that seek to defraud children of indigenes whenever someone dies. You're asked to buy heaven and earth, but told the value of each item (usually super inflated) and asked to pay cash. However, if the cemeteries in the state are maintained and properly guarded, I don't believe those thieves would be in business.

They have even passed a law that no daughter from that place can get married without express permission from the village and until the elders have been paid off in the tune of hundreds of thousands, and this is no joke. They give you a very long list of what the groom should provide, and tell you they ONLY want cash.

Edo State government, please borrow a leaf.

To be honest, it's a welcome development and I applaud the lawmakers for this. I will also advice the Rivers State House Of Assembly to do same so that ikwere people can reduce the cost of burial ceremony and blocking of major roads for several days that the ceremony lasts.

This bill get k leg.... As a someone who have witnessed first hand burials in Anambra state this will not stop the high cost of burial... First of all burials are now competition where souvenir is even given to guest.....
If you want to reduce cost of burial you must look into this guys listed below
THE CHURCH
Various clearance incurred by the dead person & his relations including NEPA bills
Publication, brochure, banners, posters, invitation cards
Coffins (cascate)
Decoration
Food, drinks + water
Hirings ( tables, chairs, canopy)
Wake keep should be without food but biscuits and minerals
... The bill should look into all these listed above not maximum numbers of months a deceased will be in mortuary.
Re: Bill Reducing Cost Of Burial In Anambra Passed By House Of Assembly by Halo22: 4:45pm On Apr 10, 2019
Well the bill was not supposed to be passed in the first place, we are talking of the burial/funeral of a dead person here and nobody is under duress to spend big on such events, it is just a matter of choice. There are some more important issues that require attention other than this very one. Marriage ceremony would have been looked into.

It's easy to criticize the bill but if u see what the village elders demand from the children of a dead person, u go clap for the assembly member's. Have you ever seen the marriage list before? All you need to do is remove marriage from the list and put burial. For you information.... The burial list is longer and more expensive looking

Nice development. Burial is business in SE. Burial is even more expensive that marriage. I support this.
If we want to succed as a nation we need to reduce spending on sociocultural activities like burial and marriage. Night parties, money spraying, and revelries should be banned
