President Muhammadu Buhari has rejected four bills passed by the House of Representatives.

Buhari communicated his rejection via a letter read during plenary on Thursday.

The bills include the Corporate Manslaughter bill, 2018; Agricultural Credit Scheme (amendment) bill, 2018; National Child Protection and Enforcement Agency bill as well as Courts and Tribunal Standard Scales of Fines and Financial Penalties bill

Speaker Yakubu Dogara, who read the letter, said Buhari rejected the corporate manslaughter bill because its provisions were inconsistent with the 1999 constitution.

He also read that Buhari withheld his assent to the agricultural credit scheme (amendment) bill on the ground of increase of the credit therein which was initially tagged at N100 million.

The president added that the National Child Protection and Enforcement Agency bill is a duplication of duties of existing agencies such as National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).

For the courts and tribunal standard scales of fines bill and financial penalties bill, the president explained that it contradicts existing laws in place.

The lower legislative chamber recently reintroduced 11 bills Buhari withheld assent to, for the purpose of overriding his veto power on them.

People, making laws for us, don't know the contradictions in our existing laws.

Why are these people ( parliamentarians) behaving like motor boys in this 8th assembly? They only pass bills without due diligence, that was how they hurriedly passed the Peace Corps bill without scrutinizing it to know the guys in Peace corps only fraudulently repackaged the mandates, missions and visions of the Nigerian Police and the Nigeria Civil Defence and Security Corps.


If you care to know, most of these bills are privately sponsored, and money must have exchanged hands as usual.

Are you sure you are not a robot? The reasons adduced by the President makes enough sense.

For your information, Buhari' s response on bills is not limited to reactions of only the Executive arm of govt alone.

The president also sends some bills seeking presidential assent to the CJN to get his input.

The news about withdrawal of assent to bills were very very scanty during the last administration. The only time I heard about withdrawal of assent was at the tail end of the Administration when the 7th Assembly was pushing for review of some aspects of the 1999 constitution, which GEJ vetoed and later sued them to the supreme court.

Sincerely, it is highly impressive the way the current President communicates his decisions to the NASS on bills he is withholding assent to.

Some of the points usually put forward by the President also clearly shows the NASS does not put due diligence into their work.

What a shame that our own lawmakers know nothing about the law they are supposed to make but rather make contradicting laws to the extent that it is now the duty of the executive to call their unprofessionalism to order

He refused signing the "Continental free trade agreement bill" until the South African President came to Abuja to explain it to him in layman's language.

Maybe the house should go and explain it to him because I doubt he understands the content of those bills.

This is the type of lawmakers we have. They don't even know anything about the laws. All they care is about there pockets.
And the worst is that we will vote them back in the next election.

The sooner we realize that APC or PDP have not failed us the better for everyone.

Is this a kind of planned drama to let us know Buhari knows the constitution?


Because i don't understand how those lawmakers will approve a bill only for someone many Nigerians believe forged his SSCE certificate, and less educated than most of the senators to be showing them what they should know.

I cant see the contradictions in the child protection bill, the one we have does not protect the child rather persons who could be adult or children, so when it comes to the court they are treated as one. In sane countries, there is a separate law for trafficking of children as they are vulnerable. I see the hands of those who deal in almajiri on this one as this law will make them criminals. Moving of kids from the village to the city would be criminal.

If you cannot read, you just reject Bills.
If the Bills do not benefit fulani herdsmen, you reject it
