Felixalex:Obviously he is talking about illegal mining. Legal mining has not been encouraged in Nigeria. The government needs to encourage multi national mining giants to come to Nigeria. I think this is where the so called resource control will work. If states are allowed to have control of resources in their states and pay 50% to federal coffers, states would take mining serious to generate revenue to survive. The biggest threat to all mining including crude oil is insecurity. No company will invest money in insecure areas. Even in the Niger delta most oil giants are divesting in onshore oil fields and investing in offshore due to security challenges. |

The 1 ton of Gold is worth $64.3 Million dollars at $2000/oz. No individual company can source such gold for you. grandstar: |

wirinet:ur level of ignorance amazes me mining is a big business countries like SA and Ghana sustained themselves through it Nigeria is not yet a serious country do u know the amount of job legalised mining will crate tools like tractor, pay loaders, diggers are used mining is not hole and shovel when niger delta boys vandalise pipes popo will come shooting but in zamfara vandals that thief federal government resources are called poor people. if that's not double standard I wonder what it is again |

Gpdwise:Face palm! The topic of discussion is ILLEGAL mining. Even a 10 year old is aware that legal mining is big business, so you are not saying anything smart. Niger delta boys vandalising pipelines is very different from illegal mining. Illegal miners simply pick up shovel and dig for precious metals and stones. Pipeline vandalism is stealing from companies who had spent hundreds of millions of dollars buying licences, prospecting for oil, mining the discovered oil and building pipelines to convey the oil to loading area for onward sale. Niger delta vandals can't just pick up a shovel and dig oil out of the ground. Even the pipelines the vandalized has to be fixed by the companies themselves, apart from cleaning up the pollution cause by the vandals. Most people comparing illegal mining to oil vandalism has never seen a drop of crude in their lives. In my community in Warri, we have 13 oil Wells, so I know exactly what I am talking about. |
