Yorubas Have No Ancestral Link With Igbo, Olugbo Tells Ooni by MyVILLAGEpeople(m): 10:51am On Apr 14, 2019
The disagreement over the history of Yoruba among Obas deepened during the week, as the Olugbo of Ugbo, Oba Fredrick Akinruntan took a swipe at a comment by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi that Igbo people started commerce in Yoruba land.

Olugbo, who described Ooni’s comment as not only a distortion of historical facts, said the monarch’s comment might also cause inter-ethnic crisis in the country.

He urged other Yoruba Obas to call Ooni to order and stop him from relegating the Yoruba race in his “futile efforts at re-writing history.”

At an interview during the celebration of Aje (Commerce) Festival in Ile Ife, the Ooni ascribed the origin of wealth and prosperity of Yoruba people to the ingenuity of Igbo people of the Southeast.

According to Oba Ogunwusi in a video recording that has been trending in the social media, “Aje Festival means festival of wealth and prosperity, everything in this world that we stand for, everybody is looking for in one way or the other, is improvement in their social cultural status.

“But to God’s glory, a particular race discovered commerce first. And truth be told, the race that discovered it first and really nurtured it is the Igbo. The Igbos, through their ancestral background – the lineage of Obatala – first discovered prosperity and wealth in terms of the divinity world. And that is why, today, the Igbo race is very peculiar and has very good expertise when it comes to commerce. Igbos are very distinct all over the world. There is no place in the world you won’t find an Igbo man.”

But Oba Akinruntan, who said he has been inundated with calls for clarification, said Ooni erred because there was no historical link between Yoruba and Igbos, and that the monarch deliberately substituted Ugbo for Igbo to cover the truth that Ugbo are the aborigines of Ile-Ife.

He said: “the fact remains that the present day Ile-Ife was called Ugbomokun, while the ancient market was called Oja-Ugbo or Ugbomokun Akira. The ancient markets are Oja Ayegbaju, founded by Oranfe and Oja Ife, founded by Osangangan Obamakin.

“It is important to note that Aje deity was instituted by Oranfe and Osangangan Obamakin and up till today, the descendants of Osangangan Obamakin, the Olugbo kith and kin are the custodian of the Aje deity and not the Igbos or Ibos of the South Eastern Nigeria.

“According to Igbo historians and scholars, they are Jews who migrated to the Southeastern Nigerian. There is no link that identifies the Igbo people as founders of Aje deity, talk less of being the founder of Ugbomokun…

“To claim that Igbos are the founders of Aje deity is a slap on all sons and daughters of Yorubaland and a direct assault on our forefathers.”

I was really disappointed to hear the Ooni's attempt to twist history for whatever motives he may have. Olugbo is right to set him straight because the Ooni has been saying a lot nonsense lately. I am also surprised that igbos themselves are not saying anything about Ooni's attempt to rubbish their historical authenticity. Or do Igbos need Ooni/Yorubas to tell them their own aboriginal history?

Lol. That one no concern me. I don't see any connection between Igbo and Yoruba, but one thing i know is this: Igbos have the inert gift to produce wealth and prosperity. If you are Igbo reading this and you are clueless about how to produce wealth, contact me immediately. It is unsual. I will help you out!

Oba Akinruntan is absolutely right on this one. There's no historical link between Igbo and Yoruba. He must have mistaken the Ugbo of Oba Akinruntan for Igbo of Eastern Nigeria.
The story of Moremi is also about the same Ugbo people.

I presume you are igbo, right? Don't you find it shameful as a proud igboman that a Yoruba monarch is the one now trying to rewrite your forefathers' history? Are Igbo historians so daft and incompetent that they couldn't unearth this 'history' until this particular Ooni is 'revealing' it? Didn't your forebears pass down your aboriginal history to you that you are now depending on the Ooni to tell you your history Like seriously.

Ogunwusi just embarrassed himself

I'm beginning to like Olugbo more now, I was waiting for him to answer the Ọọ̀ni who is trying to insult Ugbo people by taking them out of Ife history.
Ogunwusi messed up big time and those mad men that tell him these things are eventually going to be shamed

Damn. Slow your roll dude. Why must you always sound so bitter and angry? I hope you're not as miserable as you let on here in real life, for your own good. If anyone's on a rant spree it's you dude. But hey, it's a free world, and so you're free to believe whatever tickles your fancy if it makes you sleep better at night. undecided

But seriously, if you and your ilk so badly desire to become a part of Yoruba history, there are more noble ways to go about it than trying to buy into a lie that involves mutilating/denying the history your forebears handed down to you. Just saying. undecided

Dayum. You guys got mad issues. For real. So what now, you want a medal for 'teaching' Yoruba people commerce (on the strength of Ooni's words)? If by commerce you mean trading or buying and selling, look you can keep the title because unlike you lots, my life does not revolve around buying and selling/trading. Some of us aim higher in life. undecided I personally prefer software engineering and I am very successful at it. And the money I make from that is what traders depend on to make sales.

Everybody cannot be a trader, so if you lots choose that as your area of specialization, fine, but it seems you are expecting Yoruba people to follow suit en masse like your people, but like I said, some of us have more ambition in life that's way beyond that. You can remain champions at buying and selling (and thump your chest about it if that gives your life meaning) while the rest of us pursue and excel at loftier and more rewarding ambitions. undecided

How could they teach Yoruba commerce? What type of commodities were being sold? Moreover, at that point in time the Ibo didn't even know they were not alone on planet earth.
