This Nigerian Startup Is Using Drones To Help African Farmers
by Olanrewaju Eweniyi
The agricultural industry in Nigeria is plagued with many problems, ranging from terrible infrastructure to illiteracy. Thankfully, technology startups have already started doing the work of improving the plights of local farmers.
Nigerian startup, Beat Drone is using drones imported from China to help farmers improve their yield. The drones help the farmers spray pesticides on their farms, engage in crop supervision, and map farmlands.

(Photo: Beat Drone)
The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimates that over 50% of planted crops in developing markets die due to inadequate crop supervision and inefficient application of chemicals to kill weeds, kill pests and provide nutrients.
Via the Beat Drone platform, which was founded in 2016 by Odionye Confidence, Chidinma Nwokonko and Yinka Ojomo, farmers can request a drone, schedule a date for drone deployment and make their payment. Then the drones are sent to their farms for the specified activities.
The company president, Odionye Confidence, says that demand is skyrocketing:
"Beat Drone enables the farmer to achieve optimum results, increased harvest yields and lower cost of operations, thus reducing the cost of food in the open market, eliminating hunger and poverty.
We’ve had increased demand and our product has had immense advantage to the farmers. We have increased their harvest yield by 20 per cent from their previous harvest output. We currently have over 30,000 hectares under our operation."
The company has signed a deal with the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria to access and deploy drones to 1.5 million hectares of rice farming lands within the next 12 months. Beat Drone aims to be in 30 African countries within the next five years.

Osinbajo wants CBN, NDIC to take over N-Power, Tradermoni, others
LATEST NEWSTOP NEWS
By Sanya Adejokun - Abuja
On Apr 9, 2019

Contending that present structure of microfinance institutions have failed, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has called on Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation to take over funding and management of N’Power, Trader Moni, Market Moni and other such programmes.

Receiving board and management members of NDIC in his office last weekend, Osinbajo said it was desirous for millions of poor Nigerians to be empowered through the extension of credit.

According to a statement by Head, Communications and Public Affairs Unit of NDIC, Muhammed Kudu Ibrahim, Osinbajo lamented that the current structure for the operation of Microfinance Banks (MFBs) had failed to achieve the desired goals.

He, therefore, called for a sustainable framework to achieve the objectives set by the regulators.

While congratulating the Chairman, Mrs Ronke Sokefun and other members of the Board for their appointment, he praised commended the Management for prioritising the interests of Nigerian depositors in its choice of the Bridge Bank option for the resolution of recent banks liquidation.

The Vice Presiden, however, noted that a lot still needs to be done in the area of sanitizing the banking system.

He called for the injection of fresh ideas to produce a more resilient structure involving the NDIC and other relevant stakeholders to address the issue of non-performing loans.

Osinbajo warned that the federal government was not prepared to repeat the mistakes of the past.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Board of the Corporation had thanked the Vice President for his warm reception and recalled that the NDIC as a critical player in the Nigerian financial safety-net, had achieved remarkable success in the execution of its primary mandates of effective supervision of the insured banks, timely payment of insured deposits and the implementation of a robust and efficient failure resolution regime.

The Chairman concluded her remarks by drawing the attention of the Vice-President to the NDIC Amendment Bill currently pending before the Senate and solicited for his assistance in ensuring quick passage of the Bill before the expiry of the present legislative session.

In his remarks, the MD/CEO of the Corporation, Umaru Ibrahim, FCIB mni, joined the Chairman in seeking for the assistance of the Vice President towards the speedy passage the Bill to amend the NDIC Act pending at the Senate to strengthen the capacity of the Corporation effectively supervise insured financial institutions for a safe and sound banking system in the country.

Commenting further on the activities of the Corporation, the NDIC boss informed the Vice President that the NDIC undertakes periodic examination of banks in collaboration with the CBN and issues reports with far reaching recommendations to the Boards of banks for compliance to ensure the safety, soundness and stability of the Nigerian banking system.

The MD/CEO recalled the efforts of regulatory/supervisory authorities to sanitize and strengthen the micro, small and medium scale enterprises (MSMEs), through enhanced capital requirements of MFBs and the establishment of a National Microfinance Bank to enable the subsector to play their role of providing credit.

THIS HAPPENED TODAY.

Apr 15, 2019
The Federal Government and the World Bank Power Sector team yesterday met on the possibility of Nigeria accessing a $1 billion Performance Based Loan (PBL) from multilateral institutions.

Finance Minister Mrs. Zainab Ahmed dropped the hint at a joint news conference with Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele at the end of the 2019 World Bank/International Monetary Fund (IMF) Spring Meetings in the United States.

The minister cleared the air on fuel subsidy, saying removing it is not on the cards. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has been advocating the removal of fuel subsidy to free more money for infrastructural development. The Federal Government believes doing so will increase the burden of the poor.

Mrs. Ahmed said: “We met with the World Bank Power Sector team and discussed the way forward on the proposed $1 billion PBL. We agreed to bring relevant MDAs together to ensure that we advance this operation in a timely manner. We will also discuss the Country Portfolio Performance of Nigeria, which currently stands at $9.8 billion, with the Nigerian Country team at the World Bank and how we could manage the portfolio for optimum results.”

She spoke of plans by the Debt Management Office (DMO) to issue N15 billion Green Bond to fund agriculture, power, health and water amenities to make life better for the people, saying the Green Bond will be the second one and would be used to finance agriculture, power sector – mostly solar projects – as well as some projects in the water sector.

She pointed out that the projects for which the funds will be applied “must be green. They must be projects that are not contributing to carbon dioxide emissions to the society. The first green bond issuance was successful and all the projects that were scheduled to have been financed have been done and the projects are at various levels of completion.”

On fuel subsidy, Mrs Ahmed said there was no plan by the government to remove fossil fuel subsidies. “We are here to discuss with the global community on various policy issues. One of the issues that always come up, especially in the IMF Article IV is how we handle fuel subsidy.

“So, in principle, the IMF would say fuel subsidies are better removed so that you can use the resources for other important sectors, which is good advice, but in Nigeria, we do not have any plans to remove fuel subsidies at this time because we have not yet designed buffers that will enable us remove the subsidy and provide cushions for our people.

“So, there is no plan to remove fuel subsidy. We will be working with various groups to find out the best approach, if we have to. We discussed this very frequently at the Economic Management Team but what is the alternative? We haven’t yet found viable alternatives. So, we are not yet at the point of removing fuel subsidies.”

On Brexit, Emefiele attributed ongoing Brexit controversy in the United Kingdom (UK) to immigration and trade opportunities.

The CBN governor said: “I would say that though Britain and Nigeria have trade relationship, but it is not as strong as what we have with China and the United States (U.S.) For instance, China is Nigeria’s largest trading partner, followed by the U.S. And I had imagined that Britain comes quite low on the scale.

“So, if you look at that, you would find that, in my view, there is not going to be any adverse consequences on Nigeria, but we are reviewing it to see the implication, which I expect, would naturally be positive.”

Giving an overview of the meetings, Mrs. Ahmed said they provided an opportunity to review developments in the global economy, examine emerging and associated risks. They also offered potential policy menu to ameliorate the situations, going forward, she added.
The meeting noted the slowing down of the global economy with a revised global growth from 3.3 per cent in 2019 to 3.6 per cent in 2020, mainly due to the heightened trade tensions, tightening financial market conditions, softening industrial activity, dampening global investment, monetary policy normalisation and geopolitical tensions, such as uncertainties over Brexit, all resulting in policy uncertainty.

In terms of fiscal policy, Mrs. Ahmed said government debts to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ratios had reached unprecedented levels and this limits the capacity of some of these countries to provide countercyclical policies; consequently, potential growth remains subdued in most of these countries, partly as other factors, such as aging populations, declining birth rates and raising barriers to immigration weigh in.

Mrs. Ahmed said the key takeaway was that the IMF requested for a mandate to pursue some negotiations with governors for temporary financing options for ensuring that the Fund remains adequately resourced by maintaining the current resource envelope through borrowed resources.

The minister said this arose partly due to the delay in completing the 15th general review of quotas, adding that while governors endorsed this position, “we called for an ambitious timetable for the 16th General Review of quota which should result in increased quota shares for dynamic economies in line with their relative positions in the world economy while protecting the voice and representation of the poorest members.”

Mrs. Ahmed said: “I issued a statement calling for normalisation of trade relations among the contending parties and called for concerted efforts to support multilateralism and avoid protectionist sentiments.”

She said Nigeria used the Spring Meetings to showcase what the government had been doing in human capital development.

The minister said: “We have set up an inter-ministerial working group with representatives of the state governors and are currently piloting some initiatives in health, education and, of course, you are all aware of the social safety nets programmes of the Federal Government where we have 15 million people already on the register.

“The World Bank Group was pleased with our efforts and promised to offer some assistance. Nigeria endorsed the Coalition Principles as one of the founding members.

Toy drones are meant for practical. Real drones can even withstand rough weather, like that of the health sector, it will open up its own cover in form of parachute to cover itself to safety.

I'm wishing all the best for Sebastian Migne. I'll take a draw against Senegal and a win over both Algeria and Tz!

Wanyama salivating at Mane meet up in Cairo

CAIRO, Egypt, Apr 13 – They were best of friends during their time with English Premier League side Southampton FC and still remain in close contact though they moved separate ways with Mane in Liverpool and Wanyama in London.

But, the two will put friendship aside when they clash in the 2019 African Cup of Nations in July in Cairo with Kenya having been pooled with Senegal and both players being captains of their respective teams.

“It will be very interesting because we have been friends for a long time and it will be great playing against each other in the national team for the first time. I teased him a bit after the draw and told him we are ready for them,” Wanyama told Capital Sport.

He added; “He knows it will be tough and I know as well it will not be easy because Senegal is a very good team and Mane himself is a phenomenal player. But we will square it out on the pitch.”

The skipper who has just returned to form with his club Tottenham Hotspur including scoring on his third start of the season against Huddersfield on Saturday believes if Kenya work well, they can get off the groups and into the knockout round.

“It is a tough group yes, but one that we can manage well. I believe as a team we have grown and we are better than we were in yester years. We will take game at a time and give our best. Algeria is also a very strong team and Tanzania as well so there is no easy match,” the midfielder added.

Stars start their campaign against Algeria on June 23, then play Tanzania four days later and finish off the group stage matches with the Mane v Wanyama duel on July 1.

Meanwhile, Harambee Stars players believe they have the ability to get off the group though they admit it will not come on a silver platter.

Forward Michael Olunga who played a starring role in the qualification process believes they have the ability to go past the group stages.

“I would look at it as a fair draw because these are teams we can compete with. We have a very good team and if we do our homework well, we have what it takes to progress,” said Olunga who is currently firing from all cylinders for his Japanese club Kashiwa Reysol.

IMF is not correct. We have world bank and Afdb who do correct analysis

pwopwopwo

IMF already warned you of a slowdown in economic activity as early as 2017. In 2018 they upscaled the warnings but you didnt listen instead opting for some juju econ-gymnastics to mask your doomed figures, like gagging media reporting on govt data and rebasing the economy.

DAR ES SALAAM, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Friday stepped up its warnings against economic slowdown in Tanzania, saying the government needs to take urgent measures to reverse the downward trend.

In its latest statement on the state of Tanzania's economy, the IMF said although the country's gross domestic product (GDP) growth remains strong, other economic indicators paint a gloomy picture.

"Although GDP data point to continued strong growth, other high frequency data suggest a weakening of economic activity," it said after the conclusion of its Policy Support Instrument (PSI) review for Tanzania.

"Tax revenue collections are lower than expected and credit growth has stagnated reflecting in part banks' rising non-performing loans (NPLs)," said the statement.

It added: "There are downside risks to economic growth in the short term stemming from slow budget implementation, a challenging business environment, and private sector concerns about authorities' enforcement of rules."

On the upside, inflation remains moderate and international reserves have increased substantially, according to the statement.

"Strong growth and job creation are needed to address high poverty and a large underemployed youth population. Infrastructure gaps and the business climate have also become increasingly challenging and require response," the IMF said.

"Budget implementation needs to be improved and arrears prevented," said the statement adding that additional domestic revenue needs to be mobilized through tax policy and administration reforms, while improving the functioning of the value added tax (VAT) refunds system.

The statement said sustained reforms were crucial for a strong private sector-led growth envisioned by the government's development plan.

Last month, the IMF called on the Tanzanian government to speed up reforms and spend more to prevent a slowdown in one of the world's fastest growing economies.

President John Magufuli pledged to reform the country's economy, which is hobbled by red tape and corruption and begin a program to develop public infrastructure after he was elected in 2015.

Tanzania's GDP growth slowed to 6.8 percent in the first half of 2017 from a 7.7 percent expansion in the same period in 2016.

The economy has been growing at around 7 percent annually for the past decade, but the World Bank said in November that growth will likely slow to about 6.6 percent in 2017.

The Minister for Finance and Planning, Philip Mpango, last month dismissed fears on the Tanzanian economy, saying it remained the fastest growing country in East Africa.

He said the government will likely attain its 7 percent GDP growth target for 2017 due to massive public investments in flagship infrastructure projects, including construction of the standard gauge railway (SGR) network.
