There is nothing like exaggeration here please, if you happen to step on that bridge, I am sure your opinion will be different. I have experienced it, the bridge vibrates awkwardly. It is very scary!
My friend stop embarrassing yourself. Bridges are meant to vibrate when vehicles pass on them. The only way to know the hazard nature of the bridge is to do integrated study with time lapse parameter. I know u may not understand but Geotechnical engineers will educate u

Its called Linear expansivity
If yall listened in physics class yall wont be displaying your ignorance here

What you saw is designed to function like that. When bridges are built, there is room given for expansion of the bridge during hot weather that's what that coupling is for. It's called fishplate.

It closes when the bridge is hot, and opens when the bridge is cold. This is as a result of expansion and compression of the materials used in construction of the bridge which is basically steel and concretes
Basic Physics
So you mean the bridge moves sometimes shocked

The Op must be a regular trekker on 3rd Mainland Bridge to have noticed this "vibrations" he is talking about.

Abi no be this bridge some of the drive fiaaaaam pass?

Smh.

Expansion joints are components of long bridges designed to accommodate movement, shrinkage, and temperature variation expansion.

That bridge is fine!!!

Make una no panic.
I'm really surprised at the level of ignorance being displayed by whoever did the video and those that have watched and making uninformed comments. This was something I learned in Introductory Technology in JSS 3, these are provisions for contraction and expansion so that the bridge don't collapse. I tire for our people o

I think the video exaggerates the situation.

The links arent supposed to be fixed..

If they wanted them fixed they would have welded them shut..

You can also observe the coupling pattern..

Something about buckling and temperature expansion.
the video man is a dullard, cuz dats how bridge is does to give room for expansion, people should stop spreading useless video just bcus to thread.

Danger Alert: Video Show Dancing Link On Third Mainland bridge

There appears to be a disaster waiting to happen on Nigeria' longest bridge the third Mainland bridge. The bridge which starts from Oworonshoki and ends at the Adeniji Adele Interchange on Lagos Island  is "Dancing" dangerously according a video shared by a twitter user @AriyorPemisire

Public health and  safety should be paramount in a country like Nigeria with a huge population , as such we call on the relevant authorities  especially the Federal Ministry of Works to immediately swing into action to prevent catastrophic loss of lives which has became a trademark of the bridge in recent times.

You are 100% correct. Linear expansivity, area and cubic expansivity as well

If all the things that have been happening have not led to revolution, nothing else will o...

Let's just pray that we, and our loved ones, are not there when the tragedy happens... Amen o!!!

Such exhibition of ignorance. Simple expansion joint found on bridges is causing alarm. Now I give up on education in this country. Bridges are made to move transversely and longitudinally. If y'all had paid attention in school you won't be spewing your IG orance in public. OP close this page

lonelydora:
No cause for alarm. It's for expansion purposes. It's intentional. You can also find it in rail lines, Bridges, high rise buildings, large concrete casted compounds.

Linear expansivity.

Li= Lo [ 1 + alpha (Ti -To)]

Please let us all pardon the Op because he didn't do physics in his secondary school days.
God bless you jare.
This is what you get when data is afordable, giving every ignorant and uneducated folk a platform to speak like professionals.

I witnessed this 1st hand and I can say that I was gripped with fear! Two weeks ago, it happened that my car suddenly overheated on the bridge during this early morning heavy traffic around 7am. I came down to open the bonnet to assess what was going on but to my greatest fear the bridge was vibrating dangerously. Please, this calls for a big ALARM!!! That bridge needs serious attention. Even though, I don't work on the Island but my occasional trips there now is worrisome.
EXCEPT IF THIS IS THE WAY ALL BRIDGES SHAKE. BUT MY NORMAL INSTINCTS SAYS THERE IS DANGER! SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT.
Your instincts is misinforming you because your instinct did not do physics. Tell your instincs to go back to school and learn physics. You will see a difference in the information your instinct dishes out to you.

You are probably a very uneducated person going by a moniker that is completely in variance to your intelect.
I will advice you on 3 things
1. Close this thread
2. Go back to school and focus more on physics since you want to start speaking at the physics and engineering level.
3. Always do a thorough research before posting. Trust me... it will save you alot of embarrassment just like the one your are currently facing.
Thank me later when done with all 3 task

Sense no go kill you, I think say na only me know about expansion and contraction. Physics clearly explains this yet we no dey understand. We dey claim we dey go school but we no dey understand anything. OP for your information, no bridge is fixed, even train rails. In the case of roads, good roads are made with materials with small linear expansivity like Sulphur and coal, even at 50 degrees, they won't expand. But bad roads like the ones Rochas did in Owerri, expands and contracts thereby breaking here and there. That was why Rochas said the rain falling in Owerri is acid rain.

Its obvious you can't tell the difference between a formal and informal forum.

I pray we have more resolute illiterates like you, so that there will be free flow of traffic on that bridge. Imagine getting to work in 20mins from Ikeja to VI. This fear can be to my advantage oh.
