Tukur Buratai who is Chief of Army Staff said the Nigerian Army needs N1billion to boost capacity of its vehicle manufacturing company to produce more combat vehicles, which will help to counter terrorists and other insurgents.

In the closing ceremony of the Nigerian Army Combat Arms Training Week on Saturday, Mr. Buratai revealed that the Army would take a loan from its “number of investments that have been generating huge amounts of money”, for the purpose.

“The innovations by the Nigerian Army in the areas of equipment production, localizing and bringing back vehicles and equipment that are hitherto abandoned, is another major achievement that we recorded,” he said.

“You have been promised by the Group Managing Director of NAVMC that in the next three to four months, we should have brand new vehicles originally produced by the Nigerian Army for use in the Army and the general public that may find it useful, especially the paramilitary agencies. This, we believe, will transform the Nigerian Army and Nigerian industrial companies when we start mass production.

“We are already sourcing the sum of N1billion to support the Nigerian Army Vehicle Manufacturing Company. We a have a number of investments in the Army that have been generating huge amounts of money and we will take a loan from there to support Nigerian Army Vehicle Manufacturing Company to realize our dream of producing indigenous armoured fighting vehicles and to continue to maintain our existing equipment.”

“The Nigerian Army and Police have helped to keep Nigeria and Kaduna safe,” he said. “They have helped in combating terrorism, armed banditry, kidnapping and other forms of insecurity.”

Ok I think it would be better to contract these projects out to private sector. Wheather it be Innoson or Proforce. Copy the US, China or Russia example on how to scale up arms industry. I know there's plans for developing MIC but the government still relies on friendly foreign nations.

1 billlion naira is chump charge. Buhari just released a billion to buy equipment. I would think he would do more to support domestic supplier. Lastly DICON needs to do more.

anyways to serious talks; Debt isnt bad if it is a finance option for an economically viable project like infrastructure or technogy development.

Nigeria's Debt profile is very healthy our Debt to GDP rate is 21.30%, Japan has a debt to GDP ratio of 235.96%, Greece has 191.27% , United States has 108.02% while China has 51.21% , Germany has 59.81% what this simply means is that serious countries that wants to grow after finance its critical infrastructure on longterm loan of 20 to 30 years so that we can slowly pay back through taxes , train fare, and toll gating

-----Africas debt list--------

1: South Africa - $143 Billion.
2:Angola - $37.7 Billion.
3:Ethiopia - $22.5 Billion.
4:Kenya - $22.2 Billion.

ON THIS DAY IN 1998. NIGERIA'S DEPUTY HEAD OF STATE, LT. GEN.
OLADIPO DIYA ALONGSIDE FIVE OTHERS WERE SENTENCED TO
DEATH BY A SPECIAL MILITARY TRIBUNAL SITTING IN JOS, PLATEAU
STATE, FOR PLOTTING A COUP.
On this day in 1998, a Special Military Tribunal sitting in Jos, Plateau
State, North-Central Nigeria, Chaired by Maj-Gen Victor Malu,
sentenced six Army Officers to death by firing Squad for planning to
overthrow the Gen. Sani Abacha administration in Nigeria.
Among them were former deputy military ruler Lt. Gen. Oladipo Diya.
The government claimed it had uncovered the Coup on Dec. 1 1997.
Among those condemned to die were Major-General Taudeen
Olanrewaju and Major-General Abdulkarim Adisa, two ministers in the
regime of Gen. Sani Abacha.
Some analysts said Abacha loyalists sought to remove Diya from the
political scene because he opposed Abacha's plan to prolong his rule
by transforming himself into a civilian President and decided to set
him up.
Prior to his arrest Diya had narrowly escaped attempt on his life twice.
Abacha, who took power in a 1993 bloodless coup, had promised to
bring back civilian rule by October of 1998.
But developments at the time, notably the decision by each of Nigeria's
five political parties to adopt Abacha as its candidate in a presidential
election slated for August of 1998, dimmed hopes for a free transition
to civilian governance.
The two-month coup trial, which was held in secret, was interwoven
with a murky political tussle within Nigeria's military over Abacha's
effort to retain power, Nigerian scholars and diplomats said.
The military officer corps, by far the country's most powerful political
force, was deeply divided over the issue.
The trial at the time increased tension among Yorubas, the main ethnic
group of southwestern Nigeria.
All six men sentenced to die and most of the 24 other defendants in
the coup trial were Yorubas, a group that at the time felt politically
marginalized by the elites of Hausa-speaking northern Nigeria, to
which Abacha belonged.
At the reading of the verdict in a military mess hall, defendants wore
handcuffs and leg-irons.
Four defendants were sentenced to life in prison, including a
newspaper editor, Niran Malaolu.
Malaolu was arrested the day after his newspaper ran an article on
divisions in the military arising from the coup trial.
Of the remaining 20, five reportedly were sentenced to jail terms of two
to 14 years, and 15 reportedly were released.
Abacha could not confirm the sentences before his shocking sudden
death in June 1998 and the convicted Plotters were granted pardon
and released by the Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar regim
