One thing almost every "uber don cast" driver here doesn't realize or failed to acknowledge is uber was not designed for rental. Once you accept this fact, a major psychological barrier is lifted and clarity may be gained.
Acceptance is key for both driver and landlord here. Uber has a model that it operates globally and that is- drive your car at your own pace to make extra cash.
We in Nigeria found a way to build a model (Rental) around this model. Here uber has no hand, that's why uber doesn't directly provide drivers or vehicles.
The uber is slavery conversation can therefore only be effective at driver/owner level. That's why people who drive their own vehicles aren't crying so much as rental drivers and landlords. Uber is like airbnb
Gazzuz and the fence crew are on the fence because of the inefficiencies that arise via the third party (drivers). If Gazzuz or dru23 drove their cars themselves, they'll spend much less on maintenance and generally enjoy higher profitability.
Personally, I don't see how 35k is so hard, its grossing 15k daily after commission. 5k for fuel, 5k for landlord, 5k for me. A mistake I think we make is wanting to remove all our expenses, including personals, from our earnings before arriving at a net income. Anything outside of fuel and recharge card for data and calls cannot be classed under operating expenses. Suppose you earn a salary of 100k after taxes and contributions i.e. pension/him etc that is your NET. Not after house rent, feeding, fees etc, all that will come out of that 100k as living expenses. How you manage it will determine how far it'll take you. But we want to remove fuel, rent, commission, dstv, Netflix and then bank 40k as net for the week... Naaa.
Finally, we need to understand and respect each other. What I put in is different from what others might. I looked at Jesusson2020 hours online and number of trips and juxtaposed with mine... I did 42 hours 33 trips against his 72 hours. Numbers don't lie. Now if he's paying his rent consistently and owner services and maintains car appropriately it'll take some time for any major car trouble to come up. Saying his engine will soon knock is plain evil.
Also, we must understand that e-hailing does not begin and end on nairaland. There's only a fraction of drivers/landlords/riders on this thread so lets stop sounding like this is the e-hailing national assembly where all matters are decided. Plenty people no know or send una here. I went to Denis at Akoka to fix my a.c. some months ago, I got to know of him on nl but the guy no even know of nairaland. Lets just chill Abeg.
There's an entitlement mentality drivers here have which I think needs to stop. Let's not confuse it with having high self esteem. If anything, I smacks of an insecure and fragile personality. Drivers need to earn what's desired and not Command it, you have to be at a certain level in life to be able to command things of others. Someone here said taxify has more drivers than uber therefore it'll ruin uber if they continue to lose drivers and I'm wondering if its drivers that are requesting rides or riders.
Lets think in perspective, but most of all let's live and let live. I must not see the world through your eyes.

For new drivers, yes you can achieve it.

when I was searching for car to use with Uber, I relocate to my co worker house in Ketu.

I trek from Ketu to Maryland mall sometimes, because no transport money.

And finally God gave me a car, people here won't help you, they will only discourage u.

Today's update.

This post is childish and funny, when did gazzuzz become a yardstick for comparing success of a business? If he doesn't know how to do the business does not mean the business is bad. So because he chose to sit on the fence, others should follow, anyway what I've discovered is that the serious people making money on uber are not even on nairaland.

You are being overly emotional chief.

Let's look at it objectively, Gazzuzz is a mechanic, he knows all the long and short cut to maintaining a vehicle, sourcing spares, etc.

If he can leave the biz, it speaks volumes of the business.

Honestly, except you are driving yourself, it's easier for the camel to pass through the eyes of the needle than for you to break even the way the business is going these days.

On to another news my people....last week Saturday was so eventful.
I took 2 Gboys to Airport in the afternoon. Police stopped us on the way, I tried to escape but just couldn't. Those guys aren't based in Lagos. Police exported them to ATM and collected 50k from the guys they call 'frauds'. They sha allowed us to go as those guys might miss their flight. On the way, the guys were so bitter and pained. One said if I was smart and made them escape, wouldn't I be happy if I was given the 50k instead? I just look.
The grand incident was around 11:30pm (same day) when for the first time I got a destination trip on Taxify on my way home. Spoke to rider and he said I should meet him at a filling station (this was Mushin o). I got there and waited for about 5 mins before I saw 2 guys. I initially thought both of them were going and I started thinking about my safety. One was to go though. I started the car and trip, we didn't move up to 50metres before FSARS stopped us. They must have been following the guy and just parked around there hidden. They took the guy in their vehicle as they caught him with a drug he hid in the car as they stopped us. I was asked to drive behind them with one of their officers in my car. I talked and talked, begged and begged, the officer did not let me go until I got to their station o. The officer kept searching my car till we got to their station, he even asked me to alight as he said he wanted to do a thorough search when we arrived. He later didn't do the thorough search but advised me to do it myself as he decided to let me and he convinced other officers that came outside too. Please let us be very careful with night wakas especially around dangerous areas like Mushin. Thank God I was allowed to leave the station on time

I would've loved to meet with you that time too, as I was going to hint you about your ex manager's excesses(my brother drove for you and he used to gist me) before you found out yourself but I was really busy at the time. I also changed my mind about wanting you to help me get cars for cheap because I have serious trust issues when it comes to money and that has nothing to do with you at all.

I believe our arguments are both valid, you feel you're able to make profit because of the low landing cost of your cars but what about the rest of us that are based in Nigeria and can't buy and import our cars from USA? And we are in the majority. So it's safe to say that current rental fees make no business sense considering the amount a Tokunbo car costs in Nigeria.

NOTE: If you can't get Tokunbo cars at 1.4m max, please stay away from rental or get burnt. Examples abound.

I see ur point

Nightmare with Elantras.

So coz one elantra has ac problem, the rest of them have problems too .. Ok o .. The problem with Nigerians mechanic is getting proper diagnosis of the car .. Once the problem is fix correctly ,no need to be going back and fourth.. Example under old manager, the manager kept complaining leg issue of one of my elantra... by the time I took it to another mechanic we found out that it was another parts that there were using to wrk the car. It was not even an elantra part for it

Dangote is planning to sell his flour mill doesnt mean the business is not profitable. Other flour mills are doing well

Yes, the business is tough now. Only die hard drivers can afford to save after rentals. But it still boils down to having your own structure and strategy. Dru found his, and it's working for him

I don't make as much as that jesus guy makes because I still have other plans, and I dedicate time and days for other plans too. It brings me money or information too

Everyone has his own reasons for driving a car in this business

Uber is just a means to an end for me. It's not an end in itself

You are right. But the truth is that the profit margin is not what it used to be and is dwindling, as compared to his other lines of business. Moreso, FMN has flour as it's core business and is always upping the game while Dangote and their likes are playing catch up.

He's never going to sell his cement business, he's currently dominating it, and will do so for the foreseeable future. The companies that tried challenging that dominance, including FMN, have since moved on.

Truth is, if a mechanic, or any mechanic for that matter, not necessarily Gazzuzz, will abandon ehailing, then we need to take note.

Ride-sharing has seen it's Glory days of renting but it's long past. There's still money if you follow the business model; driving yourself.

lol seriously rental is a big scam, if only car owners see how most wicked drivers mismanaged their cars ehh, I doubt if a rental car can last 1 year on ehailing, I was thinking of buying a Civic for rental but with what I'm seeing ehh grin grin
Las Las I drive myself 7-8hrs per day and i make more Dan a driver delivers in a week without sweating
I've complained about that here seriously. I'll still say they'll never be successful in the business or life if the keep mishandling other people's sweat. their targets are usually new entrants into the business.
what they usually do is collect the car, deliver for 3wks at most, then the stories begins.many have been known to sell car parts for fake ones, which later malfunctions and the partner is expected to bill repairs.
pls if it's possible, drive yourself.you can use your ROI to buy cheap cars from abroad and sell for a neat profit. this way, your piece of mind is assured.my 2pence sha

NB you can also sell off your car,and use the imported one for the business

You need to spend one night at Admiralty road, Eko hotel or Allen and see a handful of drivers that see this business as a gold mine.

You're looking at it from Gazzuzz angle. Why not look at it from Dru's angle too? He said its working for him. Or you don't believe that too? Find your strategy and build your structure.

And I will tell any partner: Any vehicle you put on e-Hailings will die. Don't expect to use it for e-Hailings and expect it to be the same of close to its former self after 3 years

Chief you totally make sense.

Truth is we all have our different goals, approaches and attitudea to the business and that's what determines one's success in the business. I have been reading this thread for a long while even before i joined as a driver driving mg own car. Reading the comments i was already discouraged that it was going to b a bad business venture but as i jad just lost my job i decided to ask more folks outside of nairaland.

I started driving april 2nd and honestly i was suprised. I was expecting to net like 5k but surprisingly i was netting way more than that. ..and i only do uber.

My point is it as bad as some folks say the business is now, it definitely isnt aa bad as the picture that was painted....ofcos u also dont turn a millionaire overnight.

Its a tough hustle, body pains, long hours, good and bad riders, etc but with prayer, diligence and favour..
All will be well.
