But here our politicians build private schools with our monies, and destroyed the government schools so their schools can get students
The way you said it is like the politicians deliberately ruin public schools so that kids will choose their better managed private schools.

Not exactly....resturcituring won't do much.

The problem is, we have to find money for the schools. Restructuring won't change that.

At the same time, we have to raise standards. Restructuring won't change that.

By the way, there are a lot of good doctors in Nigeria who did not go to UI. Especially abroad. I should know...I am a doctor.

Well, most countries too run a successful central system....eg China.

Also, regionalising the education system could hurt rather than help. For example, in order to increase numbers of educated students, regions might be forced to lower standards.

JAMB works. It's the funding and the quality that need improvement. But we have a poor budget, and resistance to the idea of raising standards.

Did they stop him? I know he sacked all of those teachers o. Just that I am not sure he has been able to get enough replacement
[4qquote author=tactius post=78010240]That is what Mallam El-Rufai...love him or hate him...wanted for Kaduna state...

But Teachers Unions stopped him...because of jobs.

The sad thing about Nigeria...try to remove deadwood...and everyone would be crying about how wicked the leadership is to be depriving people of their livelihood....

Or why should a teacher that cannot pass a Primary 4 exam be allowed to stay on the job?

Nigeria![/quote]

Finland has the best educational system, yet every ground breaking advancement in tech and engineering is has been done by Americans.

Maybe they should start by telling us the number of Nobel Laureates that the country produce. Even small country like Israel Trump them in every front.
3 Nobel Laureates! For a country with a historically low population of about 5.5 million, that is not a bad number. These are their 3 Nobel Laureates

Ragnar Granit – medicine, Nobelist (1900–1991)
Bengt Holmström - economist, Nobelist (1949-)
Artturi Ilmari Virtanen – chemist, Nobelist (1895–1973)

He eventually was forced to reverse their sacking.

So as it is, Kaduna state still has its bad teachers.

Yes, I think I know that now..thanks for clarificaiton

One reason why they were good back then...until 1988, we ran the 6524 system...

If you wanted to read medicine....5 credits at O level won't get you there...you had to do much better than that (One of my uncles got 5 credits at O level in 1975...good enough for a teachers's college...which is what he wanted by the way. But it won't have helped hin get meidicine)

Then you faced two years of A level...and you had to get A's at the end of it. In the required subjects.

But since we brought 6334....

I was always flogged when I was small cos I don't want to go to school. Most times, I pretend to be sick just to avoid school. Little wonder I don't know book till today. If I were to be in Finland, I would have always be the first to arrive in school. See the picture of my school in Nigeria and the school in Finland.
Yes! the first picture is for semi animals who missed the train to evolution....while the second clearly shows evolved humans that value good things and work towards it. it's that simple.

Deng Xiaoping in China decentralized education system in China and increased funding .so it is the same approach, you get the best when you decentralize.jamb is not good because it lowered standards ,and some of the products run the country down.regions will be in competition , it is fiscal federalism and you are in competition, the west in Nigeria had free education ,first TV station. This system slows down ever body.mention a country with this same system with a good educational system.

U forgot to mention outdated curriculum..
We need to tailor our system according to our needs..
@Outdated as been given by the British.Repetition of notes and Textbooks even at the Universities. A friend said one of his Lecturer's did brought out his 200L note in the year 2011 to lecture them. His 200L note was around 1989.A difference of 22years.

NYSC works for me....

The sad thing is we can scrap NYSC...and at the end of the day, there would be no doctors or nurses in the villages. , and no teachers in most vilalge schools.

I was posted to a local government area for my NYSC. There were two of us working in the LGA. If we were not there...there was only ONE government doctor...and that guy was around from Mondays to Wednesdays., and was available in thesmall clinic in the Lga headquarters. The nearest general hospital was in the next state.,

The scheme has outlived it's usefulness after the civil war, there was asystem in place before 1973 when it was setup.in some countries of the world including Finland you have to go for complusory military service.

You came late to the party!

The best route was through BSc. Or MSc. Studies when they had free tuition for everyone. You could still apply though, they offer full/partial scholarship for some programs. IT related programs are the best bet for foreigners.

There is a thread here on nairaland for prospective students looking to study in Finland.
For the love of God and everything you hold dear to your heart, kind drop the link to that thread here. God bless you

what other results/outputs do you want?

You want a report that will highlight the number of first class products Finland produces in year?

You want metrics that add no real value to the society?

Source: Wiki

What other results do you want? The above for me is better than the entire first class certificates Nigerian universities have ever produced.
If our education cannot cause a revolution or, at least, teach us to elect sensible leaders, then it is USELESS.

The current system teaches us how to slave for peanuts and become dummies even in the face of political and economic persecution.
Who is talking about certificates?

It isn't a surprise that people living in a welfare state report being happy.
This report is about "best education", not citizens happiness report.

Finn's current state of affair is due to its culture and location and not some fancy education.

You claimed that there cannot be good leaders without a good education, this
means that the Finns at some point in time were poorly educated and how did they manage
to get their first set of good leaders?

When the government is feeding everybody, it is no surprise that the populace
will be happy.

The focus of the lessons is not in the period or number, but on creativity, skill acquisition, and real-world application.

Did I tell you I was corroborating your comment? Far from it! Nigerians are always optimistic about the future of the country! When you make any pessimistic comment, they castigate you! Una never tire for the useless country? Look at what happened in Sudan: A woman led a protest that subsequently ousted the almighty Omar Bashir ! Look at what is happening in Venezuela! I intend to organise a protest! I need about 1000 people to complement my effort! Are you in or not!
You need 1000 people on nairaland? You don't have streets close by and where you can rent megaphone. Please go and take several seats.
