I did a course on this when I was in school (OOU), we were told social work don't exist in Nigeria, only abroad

I don't believe that, Can you inbox me your private WhatsApp number, I can show you my certificate issued by OOU for Social Development.

They have an affiliated campus called Social Development Institute, Shasha - Iperu that took us in the Major Social Work Discpline.

This is a nice forum, thanks to @biafranbushboy for bringing it to my notice. My name is omosefe and I am a social worker, graduated in "16 from Uniben.

I did a lot of field placement that varies from schools to hospitals and NGO's and worked with the ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development during my NYSC.

And I plan to own an NGO in the nearest future, I wouldn't mind if this platform is also opened to opinions, challenges and possible solution social workers in the field can get from other social workers cut across the country, not forgetting to mention your experience in the field. I would like a feedback thanks.

Funny enough, i studied Social work back in UNIBEN but guess what? it's a joke because social work isn't even institutionalized not to mention the fact that the welfare reform bill to allow social workers practice professionally hasn't been passed in the house of senate, And the last time it was eventually passed, Buhari knocked it off saying Nigeria already has a ministry for that under the women affairs and bla bla bla, prior to that i lost faith in the whole socal work thing.

It's a good thing to study the course though as opportunities are abound for you once you leave the shores of Nigeria. One reason am proud studying social work is because social work is an eclectic field of practice hence the ability to comform to cultural diversity while solving societal imbalance.

Social works is a big thing outside Nigeria. The best step would be to see how to migrate out of the shore of this Nation.

The fact of the matter is from the onset, Africa continent wasn't structured for program like social work practice. An average African sees social work nothing more than charity homes and charity workers, the ideal of social workers providing social justice just flies out the window that's why we can't command respect or a well structured institution in Africa as a continent.

Of course that is one of the reasons the thread was opened and it's a little heartbreaking that we can only find a handful of social workers on the forum, by the way I'm an undergraduate albeit in my final year...
So what has the experience been like since you graduated? what have you been doing?

The best step in my opinion should be how to get the executive to sign that bill since we all can't be migrating. we also need to make people understand the relevance of what we're doing because there's still a lot of misconceptions on what social work is all about even among professionals...

Turns out Mr president perceived the bill to be vague. Perhaps if the bill had been signed it to law, God knows the role ambiguity social workers would be facing now.

I don't know if there is any member of NASOW is here, if by chance a NASOW member is reading this, plz you people should make it conspicuous in your next bill that those who did 6month diploma in social work are not upto the professional standards required for the practice compared to those who have BSc and MSc in social work. We can't have some random people who went through 6months theoretical training to be competing with those who did 4years theoretical and practical training. Thanks

Re: Social Workers Discussion Thread by HOMOTOYOSI10: 9:27pm On May 24, 2019
Today is a worse day for social work profession in Nigeria. It's sad to inform you that the chartered institute bill has been passed by both the Senate and the house of rep today to be sent to Mr president for assent instead of NASOW bill. The highest bidder finally gets the bill. This is sad indeed. Our law makers have planted injustice for their own self aggradizement. They have disappointed us again. The passage of the bill if assented to by Mr president has a very serious implications for both students and teachers of social work in nigeria but the executives of NASOW and NASWE are on top of the game. They are beginning to strategize to ensure that the bill isn't assented to by Mr president. We shall deploy all our powers both seen and unseen to fright and fight the evil ISWON. I want to appeal to those of us who have connections in Abuja in particular to deploy same to help social work profession is Nigeria. Thanks
