Let me clarify here that I had already worked a few years in Nigeria in the IT field so I kind of found the course easier than most people did. That was why I was able to clear all my courses while hustling like there was no tomorrow.

Also, because there was no way I could cope with hustling and attending lectures, I stopped going for classes except labs and presentations.

I would spend whatever time I wasn't working reading up slides and doing my research for presentation or writing papers. This way I was always almost ready for exam. I always made sure to go for final revision classes by the profs though where they would talk about the difficult areas of the course and possible give ideas on what to expect on the exam.

So, yes I kind of breezed through the course but classes and language suffered and I still ended up spending 2.5 years to finish.

Quite educative and brings back a flood of memories. We thank God for grace.

All questions asked and answers given (sliding tackles and all ) are great learning curves for all.

My summary....

Landed October 3rd 2015.....Digital Communications in CAU Kiel. Took the first lecture and knew it wasn't for me. Told the profs so and opted out of the program (was still registered of course and was attending the german class provided by the school and intensive language class with VHS at the same time (register with VHS in your city within your first year to get a good rebate (up to 50% off) you can select a start date months away).

Switched to Information Engineering in FH Kiel the following summer (March 2016), did multiple jobs while studying (Printing presses, Cruise ships, Umzug, Chinese Restaurant. etc. Man hustle oooo....days of 12hrs straight jobs 4 times a week and top it with a 13hrs shift on Sundays
I was actually doing good in school but learning the language suffered as I couldn't fit it in the calamitous schedule I was running (I did attend intensive classes later though).

Then I got a rude awakening , I visited my naija university mate in Berlin working for Bombardier at the time and immediately knew I was wasting my time with the lager jobs I thought was giving me money. I needed to look at the bigger picture. Got back from Berlin and applied to Allianz Technology in Munich for internship, I got in and all of a sudden was making more working 9-5pm (own office with perks, fantastic international team and exposure into the professional world in Germany) than i was doing working 12hrs (4times a week) plus 13hrs on sundays. All, while doing professional work and improving my professional profile.

I was at Allianz Technology for 1yr & 3months (finished my master project and thesis) and got 2 full time offers before I was done with my master study in October of 2018.


My advice, do what you have to do to survive out here (legally of course). Make sure you pick the right course and if you find yourself in a jam with your choice course, be open to changing. Do not worry about hustling, it is not going to be at the top of your priorities when you actually settle and draw those priorities. Especially if you are looking at the bigger picture. Work will always be available, whether in your city or outside but believe me when I say you will be alright and find a way as everyone before you have done.

Learn the language

Before you leave Nigeria or wherever you are based, set your goals (minimum and maximum), have unbelievably high expectations but also psych yourself up for the very worst case scenario so that wherever you find yourself, you would be mentally grounded to face the music and sing out loud because darkness lasts just the night, light comes with the break of dawn.

I am going for communications engineering, I know it’s different from information engineering but some schools offer them together as ICE. What makes them different tbh lol?
I have work experience, but it’s in form in internships not real work. I’m planing to solidify my work experience there in good companies when I begin studies. You have a list of good companies I can target in terms of our field and what programming language is most preferred

1. Block Account = #3,600,000
2. Flight fee = #300,000
3. Pocket money = #285,000 (if you have block account)
4. Money for clothes and foodstuffs = #70,000

If you go to where the Chinese people dey sell clothes for Lagos, tell them you wan buy 5 jeans and shirts at dozen price. That should reduce the money you already have in mind to spend.

Then coming to flight, it depends on your location. Some part like Nuremberg and Hannover even cost more than 300k sef depending on airline.
A bag of garri, dried Egusi, palmoil, salt, Ogbonor, dried fish and okporoko, Abacha etc (I for put ogiri shaa but make I just leave am to avoid public disgrace) coupled with all these shoes and clothes go near 70k.

Some useful tips by dolpaz

According to one of our guys who is already in germany, Emeka..its advisable to buy your stuffs from Nigeria. Jeans and clothes are expensive. most especially phones and gadget. mind you, the prices will be in euros. also, go with alot of shoes cos according to him, there are no cobbler in germany. shoes and winter jacket are expensive as well. i think around 50-70 euros. so imagine spending 12,000 naira to buy a single jacket when u can get it for less at yaba or idumota.

Go with enough Garri and some food items as well. though i heard some kenyans inport stuffs that looks like Garri/semo.. its called griese or so.

You save cash if you like chicken and wine/beer, cos those are the cheapest food/drinks in germo. I also heard its better you go with an android phone so you can access your student portals easily.

As for Jobs, the first step is: do u speak german? it goes a long way to determine the kind of job you will get. also, which city are you gonna be staying. some cities are competitive and expensive like Berlin, Bremen, Dortmund and Stuttgart. you can get a good student job cos your visa allows that, but understanding deutsch is the key to getting a good one.

If not, u may end up getting a menial job, but it will be enough to sustain you. coupled with your blocked account cash which you can live on. 650 - 700 euros per month.

Watch ur spending habit. Be mindful of pretty german ladies. (they like ice cream and chocolate, each cost as much as 20euros). if you are so conversative, you may be able to live on 200euros per month excluding accomodation.

For those worried about life in germany, this is a post from someone in germany who relocated to Germany 6 years ago (2013)

"Guys relax, even with 60 euro u can survive monthly. THIS IS AN OLD POST O I just shared his experience for us to learn.

More over u think u will have time for 3 square meal a day? food is the cheapest thing here except if you cook in your hostel. The most expensive thing here is accomodation not food full chicken(superhunn) is 2 euro=420, rice sef no reach 1 euro here.

If ur garri fininsh just go aldi or markauf ask of grease na 25 cent just by 4 if u like swallow that one na still 1 euro, food is cheap here my man.

The only issue is there education is intensive,and u need alot of self study so u guys shouldnt worry about surviving.
