This has got to be the best post on NL this year. However, what if it is container shipping... Are these the ports and sea lines for such also?. I need to ship some machines with containers...

When buying your car from USA, one thing you should never overlook is the distance between the location of the car and the closest port of exit. This is very critical because it's a major determining factor of the total cost of landing your car to Nigeria especially for those on a budget. If you don't pre-determine the distance to the closest port before buying your car, you may end up paying up to additional N900,000 ($2,500) to transport your car within the United States in a bid to get it to the port. Then you'll pay another N306,000 ($850) as ocean freight from the US port to the Nigerian port. That's a total cost of N1,206,000 ($3,350) as against a total cost that can be as low as N360,000 ($1,000) if the car is purchased at a location very close to the port. Certainly, no one will be happy with such a deal. Don't make the mistake of buying a 2005 Toyota Corolla from Alaska thinking you will get it to Nigeria at a good price. The trucking and shipping cost alone will shake your bank account without mercy.

I decided to write about this because it's one of the most popular questions we receive from our Autojosh followers. Some were even forced to ask after they had made the mistake of buying their cars from a wrong location. One bought his car in Alaska while the other bought his in Hawaii. They were excited by the cheap prices they saw on online auctions but immediately realised it was a bad idea when they received the invoices from their shipping agents after the bids had been won. The person that bought from Hawaii got an outrageous bill of about $3,700 to get his 2006 Toyota Rav4 to Lagos. They eventually returned the cars to wherever they were bought as shipping to Nigeria wouldn't have made any economic sense. Note that auction companies usually charge a fees for such returns.

Today, we'll be looking at the location of 11 USA ports through which you can easily ship your cars to Nigeria as well as the Shipping lines that sail from those ports:

1. Baltimore, Maryland: Grimaldi and Sallaum Shipping Line

2. Boston, Massachusetts: Sallaum

3. Freeport, Texas: Sallaum

4. Galveston, Texas: Grimaldi.

5. Jacksonville, Florida: Grimaldi and Sallaum

6. Newark, New Jersey: Sallaum

7. New York (NYCT): Grimaldi

8. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Sallaum

9. Providence, Rhode Island: Grimaldi

10. Savannah, Georgia: Grimaldi

11. Wilmington, Delaware: Grimaldi

Most people prefer to ship their cars through Grimaldi as the cost of clearing cars that arrive on Sallaum can be more expensive especially in the case of more recent cars.

After you've determined the port through which your car will be shipped, the next step will be to calculate the shipping cost. Our next post will be about how to calculate the estimated cost of shipping your car from USA to Nigeria.

Is there any other port or shipping line you've shipped through recently? Tell us about it in the comment section if we don't have it on this list.

Please, I need someone to give me a detailed explanation why the only functional seaport where one can bring in cars has to be Lagos Port. Is there any element of politics associated with this or was it done for economic reasons. Ports are not only for imports and non functionality of the Eastern Ports in Nigeria is hampering business growth and rapid industrialization from South South through South East to North East. What is delaying Ibaka Deep Seaport which should have a rail line connected to Aba a commercial city. So many questions begging for answers.

Bluffly:

Alaska is like the size of Nigeria. How many ports do we have in Alaska? Nigeria having Lagos Port Complex, Tin Can Island Port in Lagos; Calabar Port, Delta Port, Rivers Port at Port Harcourt, and Onne Port

Okay, since you want to do size jockeying, lets go there. First, why not compare country with country. Why compare Nigeria with a remote wilderness state of the USA. What is the population of Alaska. How many cars drive on Alaskan streets through the year. Let me have my take. Nigeria has a landmass of 356,000 sq kilos, Japan has just 145,000. Our population is 200 million, Japan's is 126 million. They have 18 major, functional, heavy cargo and roro ports and over 100 minor ports (mainly for trawlers and coastal freight).

Outside Tincan and Apapa which other port in Nigeria can you say is viable if considered from a commercial standpoint. And I donot refer to Onne because this is trade specific to the oil industry. I know this because I have consulted for a port task force in the past. Apapa and Tincan account for 80 percent of all cargo throughput. Why.?

How can a country develop like this. It is like the government directs all international flight through MMA exclusively. What do you think will happen to the cost of doing business. That is why we are not competitive as a country. That is why the needless long queues at Apapa, the gridlock, corruption, appalling infrastructure and wasteful demmurage incured which causes inflation in its own right.

Please, apart from fishing and solid minerals Alaska has nothing to offer. Don't you EVER compare Nigeria with Alaska. It is insulting to the long suffering Nigerian citizen that has to put up with one visionless and inept government after another who simply cannot see the need to diverisfy this economy and more importantly the tools of development of which ports and sea transport is key.

Weldone, continue in your blind rush to the basement because of parochial, selfish interests.

What about Savannah Georgia? A friend is shipping a car from there at a ridiculously low price. He bought the car in Duluth, GA. What could be the reason. I am really curious.

Texas customs are very strict in terms of paper works,Am a car dealer in Maryland USA so what I do is that I transport my cars from texas to baltimore Maryland because the customs in baltimore port are not really bothered about any other paperwork other than the car title and a lien release if applicable
Cost of transporting a car from texas to Maryland is around $550..I also have a car network carrier whereby I can transport my cars anywhere within USA or Canada at a discounted price..
I would strongly recommend avoiding texas else your car might be sitting in the port for a minimum of 3 months..
