The issue here now is that, so many states have not don't local government election in years. All the governor does is appoint care taker committee and leave it like that.

The allocations to non-elected officials, should be witheld till they are duly elected

My fear is that the chairman themselves are another class of corrupt individuals. We are most likely going to start witnessing them building palaces in Abuja in an even this succeeds. Nevertheless, it is our hope they apply the funds specifically to what they are meant for.

Just a little project here and there is what Nigerians are asking for. We are the least demanding citizens in this world if you ask me but our politicians are just too lazy and corrupt the meet even the tiniest of demands.

This is a very good development.There is much more to be done here.The fact that the state government organises elections for the local levels hitherto in control of these local government even if they receive their allocations directly,they will still walk back to the governors with those monies.They are like stooges,so can't do much in the reign of a corrupt chief executive.I think the best is to have a regional inec body that will oversee the conduct of election in all the lga's in it's own region.Then let there be a harmonised election period for the lga's that is different from the general election period,say 2years gap and a 3year tenure of maximum of 2terms.

my thoughts exactly. full autonomy is the only way to ensure that state governors dont rubbish this laudable policy. state governors plan b to get around this will be to simply appoint lga chairmen that will do their bidding. we are still where we are.

It is a good move but the governor will still manipulate all the elected chairs because the local government elections are been conducted by governors within the state electral body.

This state-local government joint account nonsense has been going on since 1979 and for 16 years, OBJ, Yaradua and GEJ didn't deem it fit to do something about it.

The 'incompetent illiterate from Daura' did in 4 years what 2 PhD holders (OBJ & GEJ) and Chemistry lecturing president (Yaradua) didn't do in 16 years.

The good thing is Nigerian will now be able to see their LG Chairmen in action with their monies.
