WhatsApp and others maintain the same template but are always introducing new updates & new function one at a time. It did not have call, video call, daily status and so on when it started.

For example, Click on a NL ad and it will take you away from NL. Those little details count.

Haba....I am for progress, but a lot has changed on Nairaland in a decade.

1. When I joined Nairaland a decade ago, there was no Like/Share button

2. There were no Mentions. If someone quotes you, you will never know, unless you return to the topic.

The idea of supermods also happened in the last decade, although it may not be a positive upgrade.

While I agree that Nairaland has declined, it has more to do with content than the site its self. And the content is dictated by those who post and comment here.

I thought like button has been there for more than a decade ( I was not here when it started so I won't say since inception).


About your last point, the front page takes very high percentage of the viewership. It used to be diverse and a little healthy but the mods for a while have focused on pushing mostly irrelevant entertainment nonews and snake thread into front-page. Even politics only get good coverage during election times.

People are here for different reasons... I only glance through FP before going to 'relevant' sections. I believe they are good contents hidden in those neglected sections. Also, better content creators will be motivated if their threads are given good attentions like those snake threads.

Many people don't see killing snake as news-worthy until it become a FP material.

Their present source of revenue which is paid advertising from Nigerians on different sub forums using banner ads won't bring in commensurate income.

There are other ways he can monetize the site such as Taboola and Revcontent but it will look spammy, ruin the user experience and take visitors away from Nairaland.

Exactly what I thought as I watched the video.

Aside the fact that she may have lost any accent she may have acquired in the past, her grammar doesn't sound like someone who has lived with the native speakers.

Full respects to the hardworking woman, but I really think the story is incomplete.

According to the video, the woman just went on a year course in catering and hotel management in the UK in the 70s. It's not as if she was living there for a long time. Innovation is the key bro. If he had sense of innovation he would have expanded the service scope of Nairaland and provide other services that will generate more revenue. When Google started they were offering only one service which was the search engine. But today they are into cloud computing, Android OS, digital advertising technology, artificial intelligence, email service and storage service etc. All these have increased their revenue.
Another problem is the one man business mentality. If you try to contact Seun today for business partnership to offer an idea or technical assistance to improve Nairaland he will just ignore you.

I found Nairalist far more interesting but it stopped suddenly.

Seun refused to tell us what happened when we asked him many years ago. The first time i got the impression that Seun probably takes us for granted. He could have simply explained why it stopped.

That brings us to one of the major problems Nigerian businesses have. They become complacent once some profit starts coming in.

This isn't about been broke and fixing. Nairaland is a perfect example of usable archaic machine. New demands are coming up everyday, yet no added functionality. It just doing old things nice.
Google has a vintage theme known as google classic for people with slow network but it didn't prevent them from building an advanced and modern slick interface to.meet new demands.
Ask yourself how many people use the classic theme today? especially when network speed has improved. Everyone one loves good thing especially when they can afford it.
