WAFU ZONE B: Ghana Draws Nigeria In Semi-Finals

Eric Nana Yaw Kwafo

Ghana’s Black Queens have been drawn against the Super Falcons of Nigeria in the semi-finals of the ongoing 2019 WAFU Zone B Africa Women’s Championship.

The Queens who are looking forward to defending their title faces tough opposition in the defending champions of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON), Nigeria.

The two sides are unbeaten so far in this year’s WAFU Zone B tournament. Ghana came in 2nd on the Group A standings at the end of the group phase whiles Nigeria topped Group B. The Queens won their first two matches and drew goalless with host nations Cote d’Ivoire on Monday.

Nigeria on the other hand boast of a 100% win record and looks the favorite to emerge as the winner of this champions. Their goal scoring prowess has been phenomenal and Ghana would have wished they avoided the side.

Ahead of the match, Coach for the Black Queens, Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo is expected to do some work on her defensive setup in order to be able to cope with the Falcons when they meet them.

The match will be played on Thursday, May 17, 2019. Kick off time is at 18:00GMT. In the other semi-final game, Mali will play Cote d’Ivoire in a bid to book a slot in the grand finale.

I would’ve preferred to play Nigeria in the final – Black Queens Coach.

Head coach of Ghana’s Black Queens Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo says she would’ve liked to avoid Nigeria in the semi-final of the ongoing WAFU Zone B tournament.

The two rivals will square off in the semi-finals of the competition for the second straight year after the Super Falcons finished top of Group B after a 2-0 win over Mali in their final group game.

Ghana won on penalties in last year’s semi finals on their way to winning the title.

The Falcons have scored 22 goals in their 3 games so far at the tournament, conceding just one, and Tagoe-Quarcoo says she would’ve preferred to lock horns with their rivals in the final.

“My wish was to meet Nigeria in the final,” she said.

“Ghana versus Nigeria matches are similar to games between Hearts and Kotoko, in that it’s no news regardless who wins. Both teams are evenly matched and it would’ve been a great final.”

Dennerby’s mind is on WAFU Cup, not World Cup

Super Falcons Boss Thomas Dennerby has insisted that his focus is fully on winning the WAFU tournament with Super Falcons and not thinking about World Cup yet.

In a chat with brila.net, Dennerby said he is not thinking about the world cup in France now and all his focus is on his next semifinal game against Ghana on Thursday.

“It’s going to be a different team on the other side but I am not thinking so much about the World Cup now, we want to concentrate on this tournament in front of us.

“Definitely, we know we are at the semifinals on Thursday and we want to win the competition, I think we should concentrate on the WAFU game for now “. Dennerby concluded.

The revenge match

Ghana beat Nigeria 5-4 on penalties in the semi-final of the last women's WAFU Cup in 2018.

Ghana went on to beat the Ivory Coast 1-0 to win the trophy, while Nigeria had to settle for third place after beating Mali 2-1.

Now Ghana and Nigeria meet in the semi-final again. Can Nigeria get its revenge?

Stay tuned for the revenge match on Thursday.

Falcons should be wary of the Queens seeing that they might want to extend dominance over them at WAFU tournaments. Any team from Ghana whether Men or Women are always known to be tough, relentless and highly ambitious. The Falcons should organise their defence line well, midfield should be locked and the attackers should endeavour to utilise every single opportunity.
Falcon rules Africa.

so you be Ghana girl. But the first and second girls from your right view of your screen are probably men. I'm so sure there are many players on this women team who undergo surgery to change themselves to woman just like that one in Naija here.

Wafu Women’s Cup: Super Falcons must do everything better against Ghana, says coach Thomas Dennerby

ON MAY 16, 2019

The African Queens will face their arch rivals Black Queens on Thursday and the gaffer demands improvement from his side.

Nigeria women coach Thomas Dennerby has urged his side to do everything better against Ghana in their Wafu Women’s Cup semi-final at Parc des Sport on Thursday.

The Super Falcons will take on the Black Queens in the last four of the competition for the second successive year in Abidjan.

Last year, Mercy Tagoe’s side denied Nigeria a place in the final but the Swede hopes his outfit can avoid a repeat this time.

“We know that Ghana is a good team. We can’t play against Ghana as we did against Mali,” Dennerby told Goal.

“If we play like this against Ghana, then it would be bye-bye to the competition for us. If we really want to remain in the competition, we must do everything better than we did against Mali.

“Our defence and attacking game has to be better. We have to come back to our style and follow the match plan.

“Against Mali, the players were a little bit lazy and really didn’t do what we asked them to before the game and I really do not like how they turned out. So, we really need to step up.

“The expectation of this team is very high from the technical staff, and also from fans at home. I don’t expect us to win all games but we definitely put more heart into the game than we did against Mali.”

Second half goals from Rafiat Sule and Uchenna Kanu helped the Super Falcons overcome 10-player Mali on Tuesday.

But despite the team’s third successive win, Dennerby says he is disappointed in the performance of his side against Les Aiglonnes.

“I’m not satisfied at all with our performance against Mali. Too many touches of the ball, too soft passes, no pace, no communication, too soft movements, no maximum runnings and the defence was really bad,” he continued.

“Honestly, I’m very disappointed. If you’re not one hundred per cent concentrated and don’t use your fighting spirit to win duels against others and do not run enough, you put yourself into trouble and that almost cost us.

“They know the big lines but no team wins the game in the meeting room, you have to do it on the field. We were lucky to win because we didn’t perform well.”
