The main reason why we have problems with power is people who won't pay their bills and attack disco officials doing their jobs.

Yes, discos 'extort' us, but if you were running a business and people took things for free, would you have money to invest in growing your business.

Nigerians want free power. Even if you give these guys free meter, they will bypass it.

And we Nigerians are so uncivilized. Assaulting people is a criminal offence

And the reason why many.people don't have light is because of the many who don't pay for their power
Please will u shut off ur fingers.... We all live in this Nigeria.... How can u pay for what u are not using ... Speak for ur self.... U want free power

Nigeria as a country has power issue and that's not because people are not paying because the needed power can be served

my brother tactius.. Good morning... Again u impressed me with ur write up but still same end results.. Ignorance!!! The reason is you are faulting or putting the chunk of blame on the masses... The reason we are having diz epileptic power supply or nothing at all is a result of failed governance and leadership...

Please I want u to think it through pragmatically and holistically..

If all houses are metered there won't be need to endanger lives and ruin economic growth..

The NEPA offices they use generator sets.. Does it mean that they also don't pay bills??

Don't in the attempt to appear patriotic become delusional and mentally impaired the world has gone beyond such bro... I live in Europe over a decade now... And you only pay for what u use... And if u over pay they know from their offices and this excesses are credited to u by the end of the year during audit..

I hereby enjoin u to a brief thinking time... Good morning once more...
I have advocated for metering everyone in other posts elsewhere.

What I don't like is the fact that some Nigerians seem to think that power is 'free of charge'.

I am being relaistic. Sadly, realism is something Nigerians don't like hearing.

We need a lot of money to fix power. Yes, it involves paying for bad service in the short term, but long term, things would get better.

But since Nigerians seem to think that everyone is out to get them, or to cheat them (and there is some truth in that assertion)...DISCOs AND gencos don't get enough money to improve things.

And metering everyone won't solve matters. People bypass meters. Plus, the bills we pay are below production costs.

Once again, I don't like saying this...but we don't have light because we don't want to pay enough for it. Power is not cheap.

Their bosses are making life difficult for them. They have refused to give out meters. So they can feed fat on inflated estimated bills.

Which yeye jobs are they doing? According to NERC guild lines, There should be a legal process before customers can be disconnected. The area supposed to give first and second notice before disconnecting. The practice of carrying ladder up and down, asking to show your bill or risk disconnection is illegal work. Most times they bring bill today and the very next day bring ladder on your pole to disconnect.
Meter everyone, they refuse because they enjoy the corrupt practice of billing customers without giving power.

Then seeing how people have replied you, I didn't bother again until I saw this. Either you don't live in Nigeria or you're a freeloader, that's only way to explain ur mentality. But then it might be that you have a slave complex, who blames himself for his oppressors.
Look at you asking people to pay for bad services in the "short-term". So who's going to determine how long the short-term should last and what's the guarantee a long-term will eventually come. If discos and gencos need money, they should apply for loans or go to the capital market or other means, not fleecing people of their hard-earned money. That's not one of the sources of capital in any economics class.
Power is not cheap in Nigeria. It is simply not available and the little available is not the right quality that's why you think it's cheap
Lastly, consider the fact that, you're blaming Nigerians for the problems in Nigeria. Have you considered that the leaders go to other countries and never think of how to make this country like those ones?
Re: Residents Pull Electricity Official Off Ladder, Leaves Colleague Hanging On Pole by Sterope(f): 7:19am On May 27, 2019
Nigerians are not willing to pay. It is one of many reasons it will take a while for us to have 24/7 electricity supply. People would rather bribe the officials or reconnect once they have been disconnected. Some of those who have the meter have either chosen to remove the meter or bypass it. Amongst many other reasons, it is also the reason the electricity rate is so high.

Nukilia:
Its so pathetic when i see folks like you who have the interest of the nation at heart but do not understand how corrupt the system is. Ever since I opened my eyes in this Nigeria, electricity companies do not believe Nigerians deserve 24 hrs stable electricity. Nigerians are willing to pay but the electricity companies keep disappointing the citizens.

The electricity men are quick to carry ladder for disconnection but not quick to provide digital meters to the people. Lack of organizational skills is the root cause of these problem. Let the electricity companies supply digital meters and anyone who bypasses it should be prosecuted and shamed for everyone to see...

Here is an encounter between an official of PHCN and Araba of Osogbo, Chief Yemi Elebuibon. Let's learn from this lesson. Enjoy the story...

I don’t know how to translate this into English, but “ohun t’aba wi f’ogbo, logbo ngbo…” is the most popular Yoruba incantation used by Ifa believers to spellbind an individual; hypnotise the enemy or arrest an awkward situation. But some Ifa adherents don’t have to chant incantations. They are incantations themselves! The Araba of Osogbo, Chief Ifayemi Elebuibon, belongs to this class of esoteric clan of Ifa votaries.

It was about midday in the heart of Osogbo. Some officials of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria were on a mass disconnection at the Ayetoro area of the city capital. Snaillike, their vehicle inched towards Ifayemi Elebuibon Street, stopping at the very pole in front of the expansive residence of the Ifa priest. Four PHCN officials alighted from the vehicle. A group of residents, whose electricity cables had been disconnected some distance up the street, had followed the vehicle on foot. The leader of the team, a dark-skinned middle-aged man, opened a conversation with the restless residents.

Two men, who appeared to be the youngest in the PHCN team, brought down a brown, long wooden ladder hinged to the top of the pickup. As they were mounting the ladder against the pole, Elebuibon came out of his compound. He greeted them and asked what their mission was. The team leader told him that they were going to disconnect the cable supplying his house with electricity unless he produced a bill showing that he did not owe the PHCN. The babalawo told them that he was not indebted to the PHCN and added that it was not his place to produce any bill. He said the PHCN should have a record of those who had paid up their bills just as he stressed that he had never owed electricity tariff all his life. Some residents intervened and told the officials that the Araba never owed electricity bills.

Shunning all entreaties, one of the PHCN officials rebuffed the pleas and started to climb the long ladder. Residents yelled and told him not to climb the ladder, but he refused, climbing and grumbling. Elebuibon raised his hand, saying ‘E je o gun, to bati le bo’le’; meaning: let him climb the ladder if he would be able to climb down from it. One! Two! Three! Four!…the brave official climbed the ladder to the top. Suddenly, he stopped grumbling, became utterly silent, distant and hazy.

He couldn’t disconnect the cable, neither could he come down. Looking as cool as cucumber, he chewed gum slowly, absent-minded and remained at the top of the ladder, blinking and oblivious of the flood of pleas gushing on his behalf down below.

The other three PHCN officials at the foot of the ladder sweated and begged. Together with residents, they pleaded with Baba Elebuibon to set the young man free. Elebuibon yielded. ‘Arakunrin, ma bo nle (young man, come down),’ he simply said, snapping the detainee out of his forced reverie. The Ifa priest later told one of his children to go inside his house and bring the bill showing he had paid his electricity tariff. Elebuibon was able to resist the highhandedness earmarked for him by the PHCN, but do millions of Nigerians, whose businesses and well-being are tied to electricity supply, have the arcane power to such do?

The commonest testimony that governmental injustice and corruption freely and daily stalk our land unchallenged is the PHCN. Injustice and corruption aided, abetted and perpetrated by the government against the people. Or what better adjectives are there to qualify a government parastatal that collects citizens’ hard-earned money and yet refuses to provide the commodity for which they paid? Worse still, those that pay brazenly have their power supply cut if they were not around to show the almighty PHCN officials their bills.

I agree bro that power is expensive.. I spend 300euros monthly on electricity.. During winter, summer time 200euros... Or slightly less as I don't use up to 10euros daily since I don't heat up.. But I pay for what I use and control it myself..

There's no organization and determination on the part of the government and the would be discos...

Don't get me wrong I'm as patriotic as I can be, but I won't settle for less is more in Nigeria because u lots can see what ur monies are being used for and by whom.. Yet u try to justify and absorb sufferings as if it's part of Geneva convention....

Although please note ur expenses on power largely depends on usage and size of family and age of kids.., appliances owned.. Washing machines and dryers, cookers, TV sets, decoders, wifi box, etc..

Not like Nigeria where many people don't pay, people bypass meters, we pay below the production cost of power....and we still exepct 24 hours light on top of that.

Plus government controls prices. That's why we don't have foreign investors coming in to invest. They cannot make a profit.

Power theft is a crime in Nigeria, why can't the discos hire more inspectors and lawyers, instead of marketers and people carrying ladders up and down.

In the beginning Eko Disco used to arrest and charge power thieves to court in my former estate and first time offenders were made pay N100,000 fines as punishment, but later, they got lazy and complacent and resumed the old age practice of carrying ladder up and down. Now, hardly anyone pays for power, as long as you have N1000 to bribe the people carrying ladder up and down.

who is the we?? Masses or Government? That's the bone of contention here...

Tactius I like u but seem to be a little overwhelmed and confused.. U even alluded unknowingly to all my supposed rants unbeknownst to u I can read in between lines that the government and leadership problems also is a factor..

Now, if u say that the problems is unsolvable because the masses inability or unwillingness to pay for lights is the problem and it overwhelmed the government.. Then it should be no longer be supply from national grid but local governments should go autonomous like in saner climes and generate electricity.. But that won't happen because it will amount to restructuring.. Too much power in the center that is why a nigerian president is one of the most powerful leaders in the world... It should have been good to have such powers at ur disposal to fix things and incarcerate defaulters, but what do we have abject poverty, recession, killings, corruption, retrogression, impunity, bigotry, nepotism, tribalism, kidnappings, oppression and intimidation. The least goes on... Till infinity without positive except for resilience that the aforementioned woes has instilled by default to any person or persons born on that soil.. Which in turn prepares u stronger and more determined to have the best of life if u find ursef even in a barren land..

A Jamaican friend here once told me.. They say if u get to hell, immediately find a Nigerian, when u find him u are sure of survival because he's observing and tolerating whilst looking for possible exit.

There's no such thing as WE when it comes to looking for money to fix power issues. The discos and gencos are private concern who should have carried out studies and made plans before engaging in the power business. It is their responsibilities to seek capital to fund their business. Mine is to pay for the services, Na dem go still chop the profit; nobody will call me when that time reach. So stop being an advocate for a private concern. Your concern should be the quality of service you receive except you're one of the owners

Even if they implement your laudable suggestions...the problem is, at the end of the day, electricity costs money, and Nigerians don't want to pay the actual electricity costs.

That's the issue

An anecdote...as a student, I lived in a block of flats once. Out of the twelve flats, only three of us paid for the rest of the flats. The rest refused to pay. Apparently they thought power should be free.

Same thing across most of Nigeria. Many people don't pay, and it is putting pressure on those of us who do pay.

So, how do we expect improvements, when DISCOS are in a deficit of N1 trillion, due to debts owed. And DISCOS cannot accept power sent by GENCOS because they cannot pay, and GENCOS find it dofficult to pay for gas suppliers.

Yes , our government is corrupt and bad...because most Nigerians allow it to be so. If I say prosecute APC or PDP politicans....millions of Nigerians would say I am persecuting their tribe, their religion their race...so why won't we have bad government.

And anyway, power, except for transmission is now private. So, we pay from our pockets.

Take GSM...here in Nigeria we were paying 20000 for SIM back in 2001-4, and the service was bad. At one point one could not call between prividers. Nigerians complained. Nigerians said GSM companies were ripping us off....and were corrupt. But things improved because GSM companies were allowed to make a profit.

We don't let DISCOS make a profit, Government controls the price...which is why we did not get the desired foreign investors, and GENCOS don't earn enough as a result. Bill compliance in some areas is below 50% of hosueholds.

And we somehow expect light magically to be on for 24//7??

I'm sorry. At the end of the day, it is a money issue. We can do all the deregulation we want....and it is needed...but so long as Nigerians don't pay their fair share, and so long as we justify it with a 'everyone is out to exploit me mentality'....we will never have light 24/7.

Power is expensive. Deal with it.

I'm sorry.

The power companies should stop endangering the lives of their workers by sending them on such errands. If those buildings have been metred, there wouldn't have been any need to cut off their supply.

The unfortunate thing is that even after disconnection, these companies will still bring their fraudulent estimated bills for power not consumed. Why won't people be agitated?

This isn't in support of any violent act though.

You apply for a meter, pay your money, and get it installed in 10 days.

All DISCOS should do that...they need to.

people don't like to pay because it has to be commensurate in all facets or ramifications as it were.. How do u Bill a family with an income of 36k, 100k light bill?? Isn't that a legal corruption? U knw what opinions they say is like anuses everyone is entitled to theirs.. But when it has to do with society u have to be logical, neutral and reasonable.. Do u really think nigerians don't deserve 24/7 power supply?I spend minimum of 150k weekly when I visit home for fuel and diesel, my car is diesel engine so 13, 700 or so full tank.

That shouldn't be so, it's annoying the suffering, inconvenience and unnecessary expenses as the wear and tear of properties comes with using gen sets..

Sometimes we are coerced to buy transformers, fuses etc.. Or even rent pick up to transport ladders to fix what should have been government responsibility...

Please be objective and don't think like u are from space or disregard the common man.. I don't have any issues with this anomaly because I won't experience it unless I'm there but I care about the people who can't afford what I can..

Give the meters and fix the infrastructures, trust me people can only pay for what they use..

Saying this for years. Nigerians donot like to pay for services. They will barely pay for products but services.... never.

Serves him right, though the community may experience power outtage for a while, but it'll give the Nepa guys a second thought when next they're around same place.

Nepa guys are the greatest fraudsters of all time in areas without prepaid meters.

They extort with pleasure.
