My older sister who is into Nollywood told me that if she can be seeing movies like Queen of Katwe and The boy that harnessed the wind she will delete all her Jenifas and other nollywood movies on her system.

She said she liked the originality of the movies.

I like both movies too but do you thing its what we need every time? Though they are but true stories but Not everybody lives in the ghetto.

I will to see a Nigeria movie on;

(1)how betting is affecting youths,

(2) the ordeals of gaining admission to tertiary universities (favourable or not),

(3)how Nigeria missed it (economy) when oil was discovered in the 70s.

(4) influence of religion, politicians on the society.

(5) the loss of authority of traditional rulers.

(6) how economy contributed to the growth of internet fraud, implications on the Nigeria household.

(7) the current stream of fake life and social media show offs.

So many stories to put out, but na only romance + family palaver they prefer.
When you say prefer, you seem to pass the bulk of the blame to the audience/viewers, which shouldn't be so. IMO, the genesis of the problem starts with our script writers. Many of 'em lack originality and rarely do research on whatever story they are writing, thus they end up modifying other peoples work. That's why 20+ Nollywood movies would have the same everything, we are talking of being cliché on a humongous scale, & by that, the viewers(mostly those who don't know their right from left as regards movies) are kinda unconsciously programmed into preferring such genre or type of movie.
A creative writer who wants to do something unique could actually make a movie about the Nigerian civil as captured in the eyes of a young refugee, a girl child to be precise. Here, the viewers might thinking "yeah we've got it all figured out", its a flick depleting the inherently vulnerability of females in times of war , just then you sweep the carpet off their feet, and give them the complete opposite of the bolded(note: whatever you write doesn't have to be 100% true, that's why its called creativity).
Or simply picking one of yours how betting is affecting youths This one definitely ought to be a satire, but most of our writers will simply make it a romance flick.

Well.... The movie wasn't as bad as everyone is saying... The CGI and fight scenes were on Point, the plot was allover the place tho... Carol & Fury's relationship was interesting, and the Carol Danvers character was actually decent..

Plot Holes here and there, Just like in Endgame, but overall it was a decent movie... This movie is actually the Holy Grail compared to that Abomination called Wonder Woman... And to think people compared them sad

Ehmmm...let me chip in some pointers, the language of the movie is 70% Chewa & 30% english. And secondly, its a Bio drama. If you can handle both, then its gonna be a good watch for you.

Nice points made.

But i didn't say i prefer anything, but i will say we are still on the same page.

But like koice said, people are not asking questions and the directors of Nigeria movies are extension of each and everyone of us.

If we refuse to swallow their shïts altogether they will also get creative.

If we as a nation start making our government account for their deeds then we will have a good government.

I like how you pointed that something betting affecting Nigeria youths can be into a satire, that's how the thinking should be. They might even make it a pure comedy, leaving out how betting have been existing in the Uk all these years, how some of our elder played pool, how new generation of betting came to be, playing for the fun of it before becoming addicted, adverse effect on youths after several losses, how bookmakers smile to the bank, e.t.c so much to explore. A satire that will make people laugh and yearn for more.

I don't know how Africa can change the narrative that we are primitive. Whites and foreigners are visit our continent know that Africa is not as depicted on foreign TVs, but the their general populace still think so.

I think it suits the agenda of the Governments in those countries and even the NGOs for the continent to be depicted in such manner. As for the countries you listed, google the Brazilian oil producing company Petrobas or search youtube for the documentary "Malaysia:Power and corruption". Ah no, i meant the directors not audience.

One of the ways we can change Nollywood is Criticism.

By that i mean having critics review the movie, rate it and slate it where necessary.

But the criticism will seen as evil or bad belle against the directors.

Something like freeze is doing but they called him anti christ.

In The Greatest Showman, remember how the critic was writing bad reviews for him? It made him get better and win over the critic.

Same thing in Birdman.

The bolded will be a welcome development if and only if it gets set up by the NFVCB( National Film And Video Censors Board) from there, they can create & delegate power to an online & offline database of information whose sole purpose would be to rate & give constructive criticism of movies made in the county. And also, people presiding over the database of information should be film scholars who are well informed in film theory. Their job will be to analyse movies and its place within the history of its genre, and at the same time offer constructive criticism as to how to improve on its flaws in future. Directors who fail to adhere to the set standards should be slammed heavily while those who comply, should be rewarded.
I would have suggested free screening of movies by selected cinemas across the country, before the actual release date, so that random audience can partake in the review. But i trust my Aba & Onitsha brothers, the pirated copies would come out & sell big, before the actual release date.
Constructive Criticism, i believe would go a long way in remodeling our movie industry.

Nigerian Prince
First off the good bits:

Direction: No lies, the direction was good even too good for a Nigerian movie. I guess we might have been criticizing our movies without even watching them but the directing in this one was good. There was even a well done long take that I'm not sure I've ever seen in a Nigerian movie.

Editing: Professional.

Acting: Nothing spectacular but it served its purpose especially Baba and the guy from Australia.

Cinematography: Good enough. Scenes were well lit. Colour was good.

Story: If I was to rate the story alone, I would give it a 7.

The bad parts

Chemistry: There was no chemistry between the two main characters to suggest the type of relationship they had.

Writing: This is the main problem we have with our movies. This one especially was littered with expressions only Americans or whites would use. Our writers need to know the lingo suitable for a movie.

Makeup: Especially where characters were bloodied. We really need to learn makeup.

Overall, the movie was slightly above average though at some points it felt stretched but looking back at what used to be made and what is currently being made, it is clear we are trying to improve and I think it's a good thing.
Re: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by Unionised(m): 6:28pm On May 29, 2019
You all seem to forget that Nollywood is just an aggregate of Independent Movie makers.

What they produce is to a large extent driven by market forces.

How has the government supported them?

What movie has the government made?

Ministry of culture and tourism nko?

The Nigerian Film and Television school nko? What have they produced?

No independent producer wants to gamble with their limited funds.

In the end, they are just Business men.

Until we get to the point of creating for creativity sake and not just for the money, we will keep going round in cycles.

And believe me, there are enough creative scripts out there, but nobody brave enough to execute them.

Many a producer have gotten their fingers burnt while trying to make an Artistic Statement

I felt if they had used a naija guy (just like bàbà), he would have used proper slangs and probably funnier.

Captain Marvel-

Very entertaining watch. I don't know why folks were arguing about the movie. I watched it with the mindset that it will be mediocre, but surprise surprise!

7.5/10

Us-

Well, well, well.... A taut, nerve tingling metaphorical presentation.

All throughout the movie, I felt like I was watching to stories at the same time- the visual and non-visual. Jordan Peele captured the duality of our society perfectly, so much so that the themes were speaking to me while the movie ran. And boy, the allusions! The ones that captured my imagination are 'Jaws' and 'Thriller.'

Crater sized plotholes asides, this movie is a mind bender.

8/10.

I don't know if the movie is for the Western audience because they will not notice the difference in supporting character's accent and that of the other African characters. I watched the trailer and instantly got pissed off by the guy's very fake Nigerian accent.
