No legal backing. More like a waste of time

I think he is trying to score a cheap point here. It requires more serious discussion and planning than a paper approval. How many governors were aware of the state police? So how is it state police? Like you said, our federal police has a constitutional backing. How do we do this without breaking any laws?

You lost your bet. He was wary of idea because of funding and governors.

https://punchng.com/why-i-dont-believe-in-state-police-buhari/amp/
What I read in the link is that he described it as a great idea but highlighted and even gave kudos to a governor who had started putting up a state owned security architecture but highlighted the temporary constraints which may be faced by the governors of interested states. He specifically mentioned funding which we all sincerely know some states will face. His mention of governors there was not in the sense that they will abuse it for election heist as peddled by the PDP. I therefore don't see how such stance translates to a position against it unlike Jonathan who declared totally that he didn't want it because it would worsen the already bad security situation.
Even those of us applauding the final approval now know deep down in us that only states like Lagos, Rivers, Ogun, Edo, Delta, Kaduna, Oyo, Anambra, Imo and Akwa Ibom may be able to bear the burden of funding.

This is a very good news, With the advantage of shared common language and culture, crime prevention and containment will be relatively easy.
Federal police officers, prior now are posted randomly to states where the cooperation of the local populace is essential in carrying out effective policing.

However, stringent measures will be put in place to  prevent the abusive use of the force to oppress political  opponents. This should not normally happen,  since the  overriding interest of a political leader is to rule over a state, where  the people go about their daily activities in peace and the government is also at peace. Even at that, bad politicians and leaders still use thugs to harass their people and political rivals

The decision of the Federal Government to approve State and Local Government police under the leadership of a Police Commissioner  is a good decision,
But Community policing is also confronted with the challenges of discipline, training, remuneration, management, organisational structure and legality. The personnel could however be screened and those who qualify and are found suitable may be coopted into the state police force.
The overriding advantages of a state police cannot be overemphasised.  The threats posed by insurgents, murderers, bandits, kidnappers, suicide bombers and other criminals are real and all measures in whatever form taken to confront these threats should be embraced.

God bless our President Muhammadu Buhari and his AMIABLE Vice President PROF YEMI OSINBAJO as they take our nation to the NEXT LEVEL, Aka, A land flowing with milk and honey.

Slow and steady we will get to a New and better Nigeria.
God bless Nigeria.

God bless you Chairman!

God bless your Kidney and lungs

Hopefully state police will address shortage of manpower bedevilling NPF and failure of states to pay them on time will jeopardize our wellbeing because armed men will not tolerate work without pay

I believe state police was in Jonathan's confab. Anyway Buhari never openly through his weight behind it till today. Premiumtimes and the guardian both covered him being wary of the idea September 2018. Its up to people advocating to figure out how to pay. The economy is plenty big enough. There's income taxes, propery taxes, sales taxes and maybe vat.

Great!
It'll definitely improve the security
Governors we now gain more power and have control over their state security.

But elections will become more bloody.

Speak and write appropriate grammar, you won't!
Now you are using 'we' in place of 'will'.

It however takes a listening president to bow to superior ideas from his VP. That is the difference between Buhari and all the other presidents we have had since 1999.

You’ve said it all bro. There’s a working relationship between them 2!

A very important topic that should have been dissected here, especially with regards to the salary payment, constititionality, how it affects true federalism, and institutional independence is what these Yoruba guys on nairaland have dumbed down into praise singing. undecided

Abeg, I am out of here.

state police can not be easily handed down to the states and local government except they will just be there to gather information and still report to the federal police.

The conflict of interest will lead to war as there will be competition of who to man which check point.

some are more lucrative eg all Aba road, all onitsha road etc

I disagree with you. Under proper legislation, there will be some issues that local govt police can handle and when it goes above them, it goes to the state police. There is what is called federal crime e.g murder, armed robbery and other felonious crimes which can only be handled by the federal police! we shall get there soon.

Wow! Two good policies in a short span of time. No African Free Trade AND now going to support panel report on police reform.

I am a Buhari critic but I must again commend this.

We wailers are not robotic critics. We ommend good policies when we see them.

The comments in this section just shows how poorly educated Nigerians are. Misleading headline aside, Nowhere in that article did it say Buhari approved state police. It was merely a recommendation.

There will never be state police because that will mean the end of Fulani herdsmen

Does it mean state government's will now be responsible for recruitment of police officers? and that existing police officers will be drafted to their states while the DSS work as federal police. The structure has to be clear and approved by the national assembly for it to be binding.
