A retired Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, on Sunday said that Nigeria was yet civilised and mature for states to operate their own police systems.

Tsav stated this in a statement he personally signed and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Makurdi.

He said that he was not against establishment of State Police in the future, but said that currently, activities of some politicians, including governors, suggested that the country was not mature enough for such arrangement.

“As I always say, state and local government police is desirable in Nigeria, to bring policing to the people at the grassroots, but we are not politically mature enough to have such arrangement in Nigeria.

“We have many modern `Pharoas’ among our politicians and governors who may use state and local government police to harass and intimidate their political opponents,” he said.

Tsav, a former Federal Commissioner, Public Complainants Commission, said that state police may be misused in the same manner some governors were currently misusing security votes.

“There may be no security of tenure for state commissioners of police, especially those who refuse to carry out illegal or hatchet jobs. Professionalism may be compromised.

Cos it won't favour Fulanis and their killings business.

Cos it would mean all the CPs would be indigenes of same state they serve. This will make poverty stricken northern states to have all the current CPs of rich southern states by force

That would end fulani herdsmen and their menaces within few days cos boys would be protecting their father's land with full government guns as local police.

he was deaf and dumb when Benue citizens were murdered in hundreds, now we are talking some sort of security and this jihadist collaborator is talking actions of some State executives! are we abrogating the Federal Police? Or there are no courts in the land no more?

IN FACT WE MUST ALSO HAVE LOCAL GOVERNMENT POLICE AND TRUE FEDERALISM!!

WHY NOT REMAIN UNDER COLONIAL RULE INSTEAD BECAUSE OF THE PHARAOHNIC NATURE OUR LOCAL POLITICIANS AT THE FEDERAL LEVEL?

You have a very good point

State police can never go against the wish of their existing govt nd they can use them for their political ambition against opposition

We need Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen to slaughter more people..

We need bandits and kidnappers to do the bidding of Buhari

We therefore say no to state police..

Federal government police under Buhari is the best..
Who would say we have a security problem in the country today... Everywhere is secured

Then we should not be independent. We should be under colonial rule. They know that state police is the only way to check the menace of the herdsmen. Even Buhari's interest is not there. It's just a way to divert attention from their evil agenda. And they will strike when it is least expected. Unless they have a better option to curb the activity of the herdsmen, then state police is the only way to go. Enough of the killings.

Yes, state police...until we come to the matter of funding.

How many states are paying salary on a regular basis, talkless of being able to equip any police force to a point that it would be able to stand against armed herdsmen....OR EVEN armed robbers self?

Unless you want a police force made up of people holding sticks who will confront AK-47 wielding herdsmen, forget state police for now. Put pressure on your government to plan better, among other things.

Let us be honest...no state can fund state police. If Federal government is finding it diffiicult to adequately fund Nigeria police how much more states??

You are saying that because I have spoken the hard truth, and you don't want to face it.

I'm sorry, but until Nigerian states, and Nigerian federal government learn to live free from oil and start becoming an industrial nation like the Western countries and China, forget state police.

We can do more to fight herdsmen meance....but a poorly funded state police won't solve the matter

Unless you are going to pay high taxes....which you Nigerians don't like paying.

Sorry..o.!

2nd and last paragraphs makes sense but that's isn't the way it will go eventually and they know hence the dragging.. If state police is approved states will have to be autonomous and control their resources the problem here is most northern states wouldn't be able to stand..

This hatred for other tribes which your grandfathers planted in you is the reason why you are sad, angry, bitter, miserable and depressed. Free your mind, stop hatred for other tribes. Yorubas, Hausas, Fulanis, Kanuris do not hate or like you. To us, you are nonexistent and inconsequential.
