Following the controversy and diverse views expressed by different people on the recognition of June 12 as democracy day and the honour of M. K. O Abiola by the Muhammadu Buhari led administration. The former senator of the 8th assembly, senator Shehu Sani has taken to his twitter handle to claim that late Shehu Yar'adua recommended Atiku, the PDP candidate in the 2019 presidential general elections as Abiola's vice president.

In his tweet he wrote:

While we were in Kiri Kiri prisons in 1995, the great late shehu Yar'adua told me that he recommended to Abiola to take Atiku as his vice president but Abiola took kingibe.
