Re: Help! Honda Accord Gear Problem. by nairaman66(m): 1:06am On Jan 31, 2011
Possible Solution: Try to change the gear oil!

I am using a V6 same model and having similar problems as well,
Re: Help! Honda Accord Gear Problem. by kcplay: 6:30pm On Feb 06, 2011
Change the gear oil if u have done that a long time ago, if it persists then it is likely that one of its sensor is getting weak.
Re: Help! Honda Accord Gear Problem. by Nobody: 6:55pm On Feb 06, 2011
Have the oil changed, as well as the filter / strainer, if it has one.

There is a set procedure to getting all the old oil out of the transmission; undoing the oil pan plug will only drain the main casing, it won't drain the torque converter, which can hold about 40% of the total volume.

@ Siena,pls sir do have an idea of the difference bw v4 and v6 engine?

@ Siena,pls sir do have an idea of the difference bw v4 and v6 engine?

4 cylinder (I4) has the cylinders arranged in a straight line, often referred to as an inline 4.

V6 has the cylinders arranged in a V-formation, so the crankshaft is designed to push 3 pistons and connecting rods each side of the cylinder block, often offset at 90 degrees.

Is ATF - Z1 available in the market in Nigeria? Then is it compatible with all Honda Accord vehicles not minding the year or model?
Re: Help! Honda Accord Gear Problem. by larryshow4(m): 7:18am On Feb 07, 2011
@poster,

You could use Visco 2000 Oil; that should serve you well.

@poster,

That will be an uninformed idea, to use a 20w50 engine oil in a accord, and even worse in the transmission.

http://www.bpoil.co.za/products/engine/visco/visco2000.htm

I'll suggest you stick with selling cars, or learn more about your products.

@OP, do a transmission service as a scheduled maintenance routine, if you have a check engine light, pull the code(s) and service as required.

ATF-Z1 is very rare in Nigeria, you may use Dextron III temporarily till you get the right fluid.Talk to KunleA I think he might still have some for sale.Don't forget filters.
Re: Help! Honda Accord Gear Problem. by larryshow4(m): 8:36am On Feb 07, 2011
@sultaan,

Thanks for advice. Try usage as they've advice. I used Visco 2000 when I had issues with my honda Oddysea and it served well. That was the reason I advice its usage.
Re: Help! Honda Accord Gear Problem. by zylla(m): 9:14am On Feb 07, 2011
Sparing all the english, to an average person what do you advice him to do in this kind of situation, which oil should he use?
@larryshow
what model/year is your odyssey? from my investigations I learnt all these modern accords don't take any type of oil.
Thank you all, this post is informative.

You added Visco 2000 to your engine, or transmission fluid?

Do you still drive the Odyssey?

I want to believe your odyssey's problem was low engine oil.

@larry I have also had gear problems on an odessy and the mechanic eventually replaced the gear oil with visco 2000> it has worked weel (almost a year +) I guess this is a fix that naija mechanics are using. I can only imagine what is going on inside the gearbox.

I had similar problem with my baby boy. the gear slips and driving was not fun atall. I did several oil changes, changed sensors and eventually changed d whole gear box. the car was normal for 3 months and later developed d same problems.I had 2 sell d car and am currently enjoying my toyota camry.
  This a very common problem wit honda accord 1999 til date. A lot of my friends had similar problems with their hondas too.when going to buy a babyboy u will be advised  to buy an extra gear box.
   I guess Seina will offer a helping hand for the majority of Nigerians wit similar problems.

@@@@

as u know ikeyman aint an expert but ehh commonsense rules im afraid

anyway any slight delay whenever there is a transmission shift is a sign of gear wahala in any motor

this is the reason u might have to change ATF every 2 yrs or more abi na 33,000 miles ? u might just be freeed wink

Welcome to the Honda family.I bought an odyssey for my father from the US directly and after 7moths it started having transmission problems and i called my car mechanic in the US and he said that i should change the transmision oil. i did what he told me and behold the transmision stoped going into the reverse gear,i had to go buy a used transmision about 120k which lasted for only 4months till i had to buy one here from the US.
You can get the transmision oil from texaco and mobil gas stations,some times the visco 2000 does work for honda but my best advice is rather than wasting a couple of thousand of naira trying to repair or fixing just make up your mind and go and buy a used transmision at this honda market at oyingbo.They will fix it there and they have a wonderful guy there who knows about Honda transmision like no body else. You might try going to oyingbo with your car to see this guy before doing any thing,if he tells you any thing just do what he says. Hope this helps.

Honda Accord '98 - '00
common problem with the transmission for 4 cyl & V6 engines.

Fix: replace valve body (also friction plates/disc very likely affected in the clutch carrier/drums). Transmission should be overhauled or replaced.

Recommended transmission fluid: ATF - Z1 / Price: Naira 3,100 per litre

Although drain and re-fill of the transmission in most cases will not fix the problem.

Good luck!

I'll save this statement; last words of a disappearing breed.

Not many cars come with manual now, just the  base and sport cars.
Stopped being standard in the 90's, so its going the way of the carburetor

@Endmoll, please do you have the contact of this guy at Oyingbo. I'm currently having issues with an EOD (2004) which I bought just three months ago. I was told I would need to change the gear as the issue persited even after changing the trasmission oil. Would appreciate if you can send his contact across.

@Siena, The Torgue Converter you mentioned in your post reminds me of the scan report from my mechanic. I'm currently having issues with my Honda 2004. I got a mechanic to run a scan on it and the following errors were detected:
1. Torgue Converter Clutch Circuit
Perfomance/stuck off
2.Misfire No Cylinder
Output shaft (Counter shaft)
Speed sensor (In signal)
3. Right front wheel speed sensor
Open or short
Brake switch failure.

I honestly don't know if I should have all the above rectified or change the entire gear. I'm also considering cost.
Your candid advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
