One of the shortcomings of President Jonathan was that he wasn't decisive.
He should not have rescinded on that because he was exercising his power as president.
Unilag is a federal university and it is immaterial that it is situated in the south east.

I don't think he is wrong to have backtracked, he still needs the senate to perfect the changes as the law creating Unilag must be changed.
The Unilag alumni group is very large with strong connections/influence, the renaming already gained political attention also, effecting it at the senate will be a big task.
Buhari would have suffered same fate if he tried such too, remember the June 12 public holiday had to pass through the NASS before it could hold despite declaration by the president.

Majority of GEJ's advisers were from the SE and wouldn't want him to honour him right even if they know the right things to do.

They were the only region who refused to vote for Abiola because he is obviously a Yoruba man.
Abiola won in Anambra and got high number of votes from other Igbo states despite the fact that Igbo man is NRC vp. Can Yoruba do that.

You are spewing trash.

When the ACN took over the SW in 1999, they wasted no time renaming every edifice within their states to "honour" Abiola.

Abiola is the only individual in Nigeria to have the most public edifices renamed after him and we can thank the Yoruba ACN party for this.

And who told you that universities can not be named after an individual?

I know of OAU Ladotech and even a state university in Abeokuta that was renamed after Abiola in 1999.

Why then was it inappropriate that the University of Lagos was proposed to be renamed after Abiola?

This same UNILAG benefited immensely from same Abiola who not only donated cash to the school but has many buildings on campus built by him.

The truth is that the Yorubas opposed the renaming of UNILAG because it was being done by Goodluck.

Jonathan is not a student of Machiavelli. He thought been a good man is enough to be a good leader . It doesn't work like that in Nigeria, when every one can't love you no matter how good you are due to sentiment . It's safer to instill fear than trying to pursue love that they can fake and pay dearly for it.

See the condition of Abuja stadium named after Abiola.

Compare that to a renowned University like Unilag.

Going by your argument then PMB also did the wrong thing because there's already a stadium in Ogun named after MKO. Personally I think it's a very stupid argument and even more stupid views on the part of those saying UNILAG was a regional thing (Kola Abiola being the most stupid). Are you all for real? Do you know how many governors that school as produced? How could UNILAG of all schools be a regional thing?

We need to start thinking right in this country and leave stupid politics and quit being partisan. Ahmadu Bello University is in the North, Obafemi Awolowo University in the West, Nnamdi Azikiwe University in the east, so does that make them less national figures.

I'm Yoruba and I believe MKO deserves better even though he had his faults and I don't share his views but he was a hero in is right. That Abuja stadium hasn't hosted any reasonable event in a decade say for party primaries. If you must also think well, June 12 should have been MKO Abiola day not democracy day. We have Martin Luther King day in America and recognized by the US government, not a black rights day. This is a Greek gift for political points by PMB. Not done in good faith.

How my country men rate a stadium over a university says a lot about us and hatred to see beyond our nose o.

Make it MKO Abiola day and we will know you're serious. We already have May 29th as Democaty day. God bless Nigeria.

but UNILAG is a federal institution just like the stadium
APC people always trying so hard to discredit jona

OK ... Unilag VS Abuja stadium.... which is more renowned?

UNILAG is even more renowned than the stadium thing

As unfortunate as your last paragraph was sadly it is the bitter truth. I am a Yoruba man and I have always thought we had capacity to reason but that's just trash and noise making.

The so called Yoruba elders should have demanded for an MKO Abiola day not June 12 democracy. Buhari is just playing us and because we "hated' Jonathan it was okay to name a Stadia overgrown with weeds than a citadel of knowledge. This generation of Yoruba elders have failed us. I hope my generation doesn't fail the next.

Out of four SE states, Abiola managed to win just one.

Was that the same way you gave GEJ and Atiku 1 out of 5 states?

You preferred northerners over your co-southerner. Years later, you people started talking about southern unity when in fact you have always been the region stoking hatred.

Same way with NCNC/NPC and bringing Zik out of retirement to divide the southern votes.
