Kingibe also betrayed the June 12 mandate. He was elected Vice President but opted to serve as minister of external affairs under Abacha instead of fighting for the mandate Nigerians collectively gave him and Abiola.

Kingibe’s betrayal was even more painful because his nomination as Abiola’s tuning mate was one of the reasons the late business mogul fell out with IBB. After Abiola emerged as SDP candidate at the Jos convention, IBB invited him to Aso rock and demanded that Paschal Bafyau, then NLC President be nominated as his running. Shehu Musa Yar’adua also wanted Atiku Abubakar as Abiola’s running mate. The powerful SDP governors forum, however, insisted on the choice of Kingibe. Abiola opted for the choice of the SDP governors for political expediency. That decision ended his friendship with IBB. From that day, he became a marked man and it was only a matter of time for IBB to strike back. The annulment was IBB’s ultimate response to Abiola’s choice of Kingibe. Sadly, the same Kingibe betrayed the MKO mandate.
