The stories of Nigerians breaking all sort of academic records in various universities around the world has been on for a long time, but after all this while what has been the end results?, I'm sure if a research is to be carry out to find the break throughs achieve by their mates, the results will be astounding!, personally I just believe that we blacks generally are only good at cramming n assimilations just to pass exams in flying colors but poor in critical n original thought process in relation to our acquired knowledge,or perhaps there is mystical powers beyond ordinary education to the mind blowing breakthroughs been achieve by the whites.

Tell the Yahoo boys they are ''poor in critical and original thought process'' grin

my comment was for those who have sense sadly you don't fall into that category. I am not talking about the standard of education we are talking about the standard of living of an average Nigerian public university student, have those guy ever had a 6am to 6pm lecture, have they ever struggled to get shuttle, have they ever trekked for kms to go to class?, have they ever been failed by a lecturer because he doesn't like their name or because they didn't buy a handout, have they ever gone go exam hall without eating for days, have they had to cram formulas and chemicals they have never seen?, have they had to understand something even their lecturers don't understand?.. those guys are smart no doubt but any Nigerian public university student that can get second class upper would do far better than this guys if he gets the chance
and how does that make them smarter again u have spoken rubbish pls just go and Google Howard Uni first before talking thrash here

Not true sir. No need for your research, i live in the US, my wife studied medicine in OAU , had her medical residency in this same Howard with many other nigerians. Scored 99% in all her board exams, now works with mainly white and indian doctors. Every time they get a chance to meet me all they talk about is how good my wife is in her job. Besides this, i personally know scores of nigerian especially in the Maryland/ DC metro that are outstanding in their job roles be it IT or medical fields........Nigerians are truely gifted, just give them the right environment. cool
what you said is true but slightly different from what I mean, there is a world of difference between an excellent automobile mechanic n an automobile designer, while the former understands the workings n repairs of the automobile at which he/she might be very efficient the later engages in deep thought to come up with a new concept in automobile development,to me your wife n co fits the former but I wish the Nigerian academic record breakers will achieve the status of the later, this is what I mean.

suffering with no adequate equipment in naija schools doesn't make a person smart

When Nigerians go school abroad, they more often than not do well, and I mean very well.
The same Nigerians that struggled in Nigeria... I know people that even failed out of a Nigerian University and became stellar abroad.

to survive the sordid conditions and pass, requires mental toughness and ingenuity ( smartness).

By the way, I have written foreign ( qualifying) exams and they were not even as tough as exams I wrote as an undergraduate... and I was not the smartest.

And also if you are going by this then everyone who goes there should make breakthroughs each then come on listen to urself u don't have to make a scientific breakthrough to be successful or noticed

everyone passes foreign exams it's collecting high scores that is palava
OK is jamb hard again? No it's stupidly easy
But students fail because of not reading or from jamb itself so basically suffering does not make u smart

I was trying to be modest, the foreign exams have been moin-moin.
US o, UK o, boys have been blasting it! grin

I don't understand the Jamb rationale? If you ace your courses in spite of suffering, you will obviously do better in more favourable conditions.

If you have experienced both sides of the divide, then you can objectively say Nigerians are not so smart.
But if you have not...

I will say again, Nigerians are soooo smart!

P.S-- the foreign exams I wrote were Professional exams, undergraduate exams are undergraduate exams.

Oga, what exactly are you trying to say? undecided

Nigerians are doing well in IT,Medicine, Law... if you decide to be blind to that, its your business.
Mind you scientific breakthroughs sometimes take decades or centuries.

Bill Gate's IQ is not higher than (say) Newton's because one makes Computer programmes and one observed apples. Breakthroughs take concerted effort. Years and years of little efforts by different people-- a light bulb here, a capacitor here, a teacher here, a calculator here, a book there... until you get that "magnificent breakthrough'' you want to see.

Every scientific breakthrough rides on the wings of several unknown others before it.

Now i get your point. We have some Nigerians that reflects the later but i thing we need more of them, like the Indians.

yes but that missing class matter happens everywhere forget I can swear on my life that my brother when he went to Texas Tech said there are some students that only came for orientation and then never came back only when there is test or exam they will appear and they do well also yes what they don't know is that abroad too it's hard in acclaimed schools or even registered colleges u have to be smart and understand as they will always be bringing new methods of learning and teaching especially in the it and engineering sectors but the main difference between here and abroad is that u will enjoy the learning u see new things to experiment with you are allowed to actually practicalize what u learn the environment is clean sane and up to date I remember when I went school hunting with my parents I was never the interested in school type until I saw what went on there was like something out of a movie with the inventions that's when I knew I had to go there

thank god you said they do well. but its not in all the xourses you can skip classes. some attendance is mandatory. those guys that come once the thing with them are one of 2 instances, either they are just exceptionally smart or they are carrying the course over again so they really know it this time to not be in class where attendance isnt required.

That is a fallacy, it is not necessary the stress that makes one good as portray by you. Hardwork is the key to success. Even if the aforementioned( aside ruthless lecturers) obstacles isn't prevalent in our public universities, who go pass go pass.

all of una talking rubbish dont know what it means stydying abroad. should education that is already stressful in its own ramification add additional stress that can be done away with? in Nigeria you can settle, you can cut corners with the system abroad you cant. if the total mark to pass an exam is 6, you are expected to get a minimum of 4 before you can pass. anything before is FAIL. i mean look at it, a little above 3 in this instance should be a pass right? 3, 3.1 and above but there its not. 4 which is above average. of which to them a 4 is a bad score.

you would be bombarded with assignments and presentations, there is no escaping it that you give it out to someone to do or you copy and paste. you would fail woefully. you are expected to know it. if you dont know it, you would be very terrible with yourself because you cannot escape interactive sessions in class where people may be paired in groups and ideas are thrown around. Abroad, you cannot separate school and normal life. school, learning and studying is normal life till the end of the semester because assignments, papers, group work, presentations keeps you always studying or feeling guilty for not studying or beimg nervous and scared all the time . In Nigeria, the only time people are in full school mode is during exams or tests. infact you can afford to miss lectures and be out of school mode till whenevrr you feel like.

Abroad, your lecturer knows you all in class, knows the weak amd strong ones, the omes to always throw questions at to put them on their toes all the time. You are in class the whole day. basically. sometimes from 8am to 4 or 5pm with 15 mims break at every hour then a major break by mid day.so you see my friend, the suffering yall are suffering in your "nigerian university" is not education related, rather its just punishment or should i say "an appendage" of the general suffering attached with being and living in nigeria mixed with your education. Dont think they have it easy there. its equally as tough, if not tougher.
Someone is making sense here. I think you should create a topic with practical experience on this platform to enlighten many Nigerians who think it is easier over there

So one must school in OAU before he's acclaimed brilliant.....

That mindset alone is devoid of common Sense and it shouldn't have been made by someone claiming to come from a first class school in Nigeria.

Why aren't graduates from the so-called school challenging the very fabric of modern education?
How many graduates end up being inventors, producers and not administrators?
How many can we claim have world-wide recognition?
What is the direct impact of OAU graduates on the Nigerian economy?
How have they influenced the west African sub region and Africa at large?

Now coming to the field of medicine

Yes OAU graduates are brilliant

Heck......

Nigerians are a brilliant bunch but our educational structure has spoiled things for us.

I knew someone back in the days in FUTA, he was brilliant but a victim of hate from some lecturers. He was frustrated out of the system and in few years, this guy was in Italy where he graduated first class, gained scholarship till Phd level and he's doing fine home and abroad right now.

Poll: How many billionaires are really products of the Nigerian educational system? The answer is alarming.

But take China as a case study, there are over a million millionaires and so many billionaires.

So please just appreciate the feat of these wonderful young men and women....
Decry the rot in our system and move on already
Thank you. Many equate hardship for accomplishment. After suffering harsh conditions to graduate from OAU, the final question is whether the knowledge was acquired indeed and used to impart humanity? How many from OAU can answer those affirmatively?

Every exam, has a format, even the supposed most difficult ones.
If you can decode it, smiles all the way!
That's why some have said exams are not the truest test!
