Its a 24 team tournament .

It goes thus.

Group stage- round of 16- Quarter final- semi final- final.

Group winner and runner up qualify for the round of 16..that makes 12 teams.. (there are 6 groups) All the teams that finished 3rd in their group will be ranked according to their points,Goal difference, goal for,etc.. and the top 4 will advance to the round of 16.
That was the format used for Euro 2016 (Portugal finished third in their group and still ended up as champions).. it's been used for the u-17 and u-20 world cup too and will b used for this year AFCON too.
