Land preparation for a client. Application of herbicide + pesticide to the farm before planting. Importance of this operation 1. The sucker will be sure of weed free at least for 1month after planting which will prevent them from competition at their critical stage 2. The operation will ensure the suckers get enough water and sunlight since the soil is exposed So if you have cleared that farm land and burn, next step is application of herbicide.

A soil’s ability to react with positively charged molecules is called it’s cation exchange capacity (CEC). The higher the CEC, the higher the negative charge of the soil and the more cations that can be held. The most common soil cations are: calcium, magnesium, potassium, ammonium, hydrogen and sodium. Generally soils with more clay silt and organic matter have a higher CEC and the CEC decreases with increased sand content. The most basic thing to remember is CEC indicates how well your soil will hold onto anything, including nutrients and water. Below are some practical implications of your soil’s Cation Exchange Capacity: Low CEC soils need quick but frequent watering, while high CEC soils need slow water applied less often. When applying fertilizers and soil conditioners to low CEC soil, it is best to apply a little at a time to avoid the risk of leaching them through the soil and into ground water. When applying nutrients to high CEC soils it is best to incorporate them, if they are placed on the surface they are more prone to run-off due to the slow infiltration rate. The lower the CEC of a soil, the faster the soil pH will decrease with time. Soils with a low CEC are more likely to develop deficiencies in calcium, potassium & magnesium. Because they are resistant to leaching, high-CEC soils generally do not need to be limed as frequently as low-CEC soils; but when they do become acid and require liming, higher lime rates are needed to reach optimum pH. It only a reliable soil fertility testing that can reveal the CEC value of your farm soil. The implication of this is that to make a concise and logical decision on your farm crop/soil management, you need to have adequate knowledge of the farm soil fertility |

As you consider going into plantain farming.,...have you adequately consider the risk factor and ays to put them in check? Risk factor like: 1. Disease out break like fungi or Nematode attack 2. Wind breaking down the sucker carrying bunches already 3. Theft 4. Weed 5. Poor management or employing unskilled manager 6. Not securing your market before the fruit are ready to go to the market 7. The fertility history of your farm soil All these and more need to be taken care of before venturing into the Biz. Invest wisely. Kenfarm will guide you adequately on how to make this risk factor your stepping stones to bumper harvest. Contact us asap

Client Query: How do you sell your plantain ensuring to rip you off?? Good Q, but I need to tell you I did not take it to any market. If I did it won't be bought for such a handsome price. However, when my plantation was 7months old, I started doing market survey to find out the best set if buyer. I keep visiting the buyers to review the price they are willing to buy my plantain. In the course of my market survey, I realised the boli sellers price offer was way too low.....why You may ask........I find out from them that this is the season for roasting maize. So all of them prefare to rost and sell maize and not plantain. Especially because this is the period plantain is way expensive for them to trade.... So I opted to sell my Giant Elephant plantain to whole sellers and consumers who where willing to buy a bunch for 2-3k and a dozen for 25k. All i did was spend the whole day driving round town, meeting with all plantain wholesellers, collecting their numbers, documenting it and when I harvested I just put a call through to them and sold it to highest bidder. In all, you need to create your own market for your farm produce. However, if you want kenfarm to market your produce, we charge an agreed % Cheers!

A Quick tip for our esteem clients: Preparing suckers Suckers are separated from their mother plant with a spade or machete. The sucker corm must not be damaged or chipped. Consequently the corm should be carefully peeled with a machete. The pseudo stem of the suckers should be cut off a few centimeters above the corm. Peeling of the corm delays the development of nematode infestation, while cutting of the pseudo stem reduces bulkiness and improves early growth of the newly planted sucker. Ensure you also look out for early symptoms of Fungi infection on your plantain farm as late identification my make it impossible to control for the manifestation. Kenfarm can help you have a pictorial examination of your plantain plantation to identify early symptoms of fungi. We can not give you concise confirmation of whether or not your farm is having manifestation of fungi attack unless we visit your farm take sample and analyse for presence of fungi and type of fungi with remedy. But picture sent to us may just help us give you useful clues. Cheers!! |

Client Query below Thanks for the information. Kindly assist with the analysis of revenue/income that will be generated in one acre to cover your cost analysis in the quote to make profit. Thanks. Hope to hear from you soon. Kenfarm response below When u plant 1000 suckers it means you expecting to harvest 1000bunches if yu did not experience wind falling any stand. A bunch is #1000 or more. So you expect to make 1M from your one acre. However, you can not make your 1M in one season as all bunches can not grow fruit same time. So the 1M is a cumulative saving of sells for like 3season. The good news is if you plant in May 2019, by July 2020 you will be harvesting a cumulative of 200-300 bunches. In July 2021 you will harvest another 200-300 bunches or even more. So in 3season you should make out your 1M. By July 2021, your one acre will be having up to 2000 stands of suckers so it keep multiplying every season All these info are not from google. It the experience I have gathered from this Biz over the years But let me quickly say that whether or not you get the above depends on 1. If you buy your sucker from the right source 2. If you take adequate care of the farm 3. If you analyse the soil to know what level of fertilizer to apply, what type and what method to apply 4. How well you control weed 5. How knowledgeable is your farm keeper 6. If your farm is not in area where the fruit will be stolen even before it get mature enough to command good market price. I can go on and on but contact kenfarm for more detail after buying our hybrid suckers Hybrid treated Giant Elephant suckers still available at a friendly price Cheers!! |

Soil Colour: If The colour of the soil is reddish – brown down the profile. The red colour shows that the soil has adequate iron which are component of clay minerals while light brown colour showed that sand are more in the soil. However, clay mineral play a major role in nutrient adsorption which help in holding cations (Ca4, mg4, K+ and Na+) on the surface of the clay mineral for contact exchange. Also, the clay content will help in holding water in the soil when the sand content of the soil drains water due to large macro pores of the sand. |

Are you aware that hybrid plantain suckers are heavy feeder of macro nutrient? Are you aware that not all exchangeable actions are released to the soil? Are you aware that the topography of your farm land determines how much pseudo stem will be affected by wind? Do you know that you do not just apply any Qty of manure on your farm land? Over application raise the nutrient beyond critical level and under application leads to deficiency The solution to all these and more will be explicitly taken care of in our soil fertility test. Those who engage our services last season are reaping the benefit Make a wise decision. Let us do a soil test on 1. A newly acquired farm land 2. A land you have been putting to use for over 3yrs 3. A land with poor yeild 4. A land with a soil suspected to be having soil for building construction 5. A land expose to direct sunlight for years and prone to erosion |
