The National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno on Thursday disclosed that some groups like the Al-majiri groups would be proscribed by the Federal Government.

He briefed State House correspondents at the end of NEC meeting chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa Abuja.

Noting that the groups are becoming a problem to the society, he said that education is every child’s right.

He also pointed out that drivers of insecurity in the country included unemployment, poverty and increasing population.

I pray that the government will have the political will to take this bold step against the archaic, barbaric and inhumane cultural system.

Shame on the elites from the Almajiri infested northern cities who selfishly looked the other way while this time bomb was being planted decades ago.

While at it, the government should also look into the proscription of the Killer Herdsmen and their affiliates.

As an outsider who came close to this Almajiri system during my NYSC, I would suggest the following for now:
1. Northern State Governments should make a law to abolish Almajiri as presently done and incorporate Islamic/Arabic studies into formal curriculum for primary and secondary schools. Northern Governors should appoint a body to harmonize such curriculum across states. It is not difficult.
2. Make education free and compulsory up to secondary schools.
3. Since many intelligent girls who get married after secondary school education end up wasting away, I am suggesting that such qualified young women should be recruited and trained to teach children in primary schools. Women are better primary school teachers of children of that age group. The current teachers are simply faulty machine that produces bad products and should be changed.
4. Since Almajiri system is informal and largely unregulated, it has produced more social deviants than 'Islamic evangelists' as intended. These children, teenagers and young adults whose future have been distorted by Almajiri system, should be rehabilitated first to 'reset their brain' that society value them. State governments should develop and implement rehabilitation and skill acquisition programs that would enable them work for others on farms or even operate their farms. Intelligent ones among them could be given special education and taught vocational skills in various trades or employed in government agencies.

Buhari should be ready for a war from his kinmen but if he wins it will a big relief on all of us because wrong practices of Almajiri system has become a feeder pipe to insurgency, banditry ,kidnapping and other social vices.
