Hi all,
Will be relocating from Winnipeg to Ontario in August and will like to sublet my apartment. It is located in Winnipeg south and it is close to University of Manitoba. It is a 2 bedroom condo with a dish washer, large storage, a microwave, fridge, a stove, AC, a washer and dryer in suite, a bath and toilet, each room has a closet and there is a gym and a swimming pool in the building. The rent is $1250 per month which includes cost of parking, heat and water only. If interested please pm me.

Still not clear when you say he can get PR. Which relative e.g. if he has a parent in the US they can file for him if they are citizens though it can take years depending on various factors, but if he has an uncle etc no they cannot. Pretty much pick the country where he has the best/easier chance of getting permanent residence.

I have always been encouraged by the landing stories i have read here and believe its only fair i share mine.

We got our ppr on may 9th and passports on june 7th. We booked our flights for the 17th even before passports arrived, cos im expecting so we needed to leave as soon as possible. We were not ready to take chances on baby being born in nigeria after copr.

I had to go for fit to fly at their clinic in VI on friday since we were travelling on monday. ( fit to fly cant be older than 3 days we were told) paid 10k which i later discovered was a waste of money and time. I was still given a form when checking in to go and get fit to fly at the MMIA clinic cost 2k. I just gave them my scan report at the MMIA clinic and they did few checks. My advice just do the fit to fly at the airport. Even after calling ET and being told i cldnt do at the airport clinic and told to go to VI before the flight. They still ended up making me do it at the airport(sigh).

We got to the airport in good time, like 3hrs before. I packed 6bags and they were all within the 23kg range(dusts collar). I didnt pack much food items just egusi, ogbonno, and ground crayfish. I had to sacrifice my unripe plantain flour for the 23kg cause also didnt pay anything for agric fees, they just checked and were like is this all u have u can go.

Anyway we checked in, was getting ready to go thru immigration when i remembered we didnt lock our bags. Ha mogbe all the drug smuggling alakoba stories started playing in my head. For my peace of mind, i just prayed Lord Jesus into your hands we commit our bags (and after praying started thinking of defense options for worst case scenarios being legally minded can be a pain). We boarded and flight to addis ababa went smoothly, food wasnt so bad. Called family at addis ababa airport to let them know we were fine. Then boarded the loooong flight to toronto. I tried sleeping, walked around the airplane a few times, did some exercises at the back of the plane. Got hungry, thank God i brought some snacks and yoghurt cos wasnt in the mood for the food. It wasnt so bad just didnt feel like eating their food, hubby and son ate most of the food. Son ate mostly the chicken and bread and lots of biscuit. Mercifully he slept thru most of the flights. Hubby handled all the toilet breaks for him and he was good. That was a life saver for me. As for me, just like u are told to note all the emergency exits in the plane i noted all the toilet locations on the plane as a frequent flyer(visitor ). I drank only water on the plane and a lot of it which helped. Another great thing was having compression socks on. It was a great relief for me. Even though i shouted when i had to pay 10k for them, they were worth it. We finally landed at toronto. By this time i was tired of flying and just cldnt wait to get off the plane.

Joined the queue, entry visa stamped and then directed to where we would have landing formalties. By then son was fully awake and running up and down playing with other kids and hubby chasing him arnd. Only questions asked was whether we had been to canada before and how much we had. Told to take a sit while copr was being processed. We met two other nigerian families while waitng. After like 5mins we were called to sign our copr copies. We were on our way to get our sin when our son decided he wanted to go back the way we came, like flash the boy had gone under the ropes and took off running in a restricted area. Hubby had to drop all luggage and chase after him with several immigration officers rushing out in full attack mode when they saw a 6ft black man running only to see the tiny boy he was chasing and they started laffing. The boy was really dodging oyinbo trying to catch him laffing and looking back to make sure his pursuers were not near. Eventually after like 200metres he was caught by hubby who normally would have given him two hot ones on his bum to reset his brain, now humbly telling him you made daddy run after you. I think at that point the halleluyah chorus went off in my boys head, like really so im now in canada and untouchable( hes just two by the way). He was just smiling feeling cool.
Then after sin, we went to claim our luggage, hubby was like lets get the big cart for 16dollars, my ijebu ancestors rolled in their graves and i was like lets just get 2 carts and push since we were going to check our bags in for connecting to edmonton. Passed thru customs, and nothing was checked. It was like a 5mins walk to drop off our bags, by the way our bags were untouched nothing missing or added, prayers answered. Then went to wait for the flight to edmonton. Flight was horribly uncomfortable for me. The space btw the seats was tiny.
Hosts came to pick us up at airport. Tried to get our health number that tuesday but needed proof of address, so next day opened account and then went to register for the health number. I got a number immediately cos i told the lady needed to see a doctor urgently amd was extra polite and smiling sweetly. Hubby and son will have to wait 2weeks fornhealth card to arrive. I saw the doc on friday morning, went to do tests etc same day.

Just chilling for now, while hubby is busy polishing cv for job applications. In all grateful to have landed safely and having people on ground helping us to settle in smoothly.

NB: never underestimate the power of a support network if u have the opportunity. Also having the right information to make wise choices is key. Dont try to do it all alone to avoid costly mistakes.

Hi Winterpeg, would love to but preference is for somewhere pretty close to UW (as i no get car), and the tenancy code(whatever that means) for me is 3br.
A few things pls..
a. I'm arriving in August. Why are you leaving Winnipeg pls - if you don't mind sharing..
b. If you have gently-used household stuff you no longer need, I would be very interested. The campus housing is unfurnished so every little bit would help.
c. Biko what's the difference between heat and electricity/hydro?

Edmonton the preferred destination in Canada. On the other hand, singles prefer Calgary while couples prefer Edmonton. Am I missing something guys?

I really do no know what area of food science you will like to delve into in Canada but I believe that food scientists are those that conduct research on food so I'm thinking you might be talking about going into academia or working in a laboratory that studies and develop new food products or maybe something in that line. The area of food science you are considering and the experience you have will determine what courses you will do just like I think Salford mentioned or sometimes you might not need to go back to school depending on what you already have. I will give an example about my own situation. In Nigeria I worked as a Food safety person for the government and I already have one ISO certification. I mostly did inspections. Here in Canada I applied to the cfia without taking any other courses and I got called to do the recruitment test. So basically evaluate what you have against what is required for the line of work you will like to do here. You can use any of the Canadian job sites to know what is required for the line of work you are interested in. But I have read here about people not having the Canadian experience not getting their desired jobs which sometimes is true while some others get lucky with going back to school. So if you dont want to take chances or if you believe you still have a gap to fill, it's best you take some short courses here in Canada which I believe will open more doors.

When we got there we weighed our lauggage and everything was fine then we proceed to the other section ...omo the money they collected from us no be here ....so we entered the plane at to 6 then left Nigeria at 6 am
Then we stopt at morocco truth be told morocco is much more beautiful than Nigeria it got me wondering if truly morocco is an african country
We left morocco at 5pm and straight to Montreal Canada is really beautiful when we got to Canada we had to collect ticket so the immigration office there can attend to us it was a long wait .....forgot to add the food inside the plane was too spicy Biko who stays at Rockland?

Like we joke amongst already landed, if you want the hustle/hit the ground running kinda, na Toronto/GTA if you are the easy/jenkele type, other province however if you are team ballerz/kashogi, its Vancouver baby!

Congratulations on your landing, please what kind of mistakes should one avoid?

Let me just share a few, some have been mentioned here
1. Never change usd at the airport, coming from nigeria u can change like 200cad from the bureau de change or mallam guys so u have some cad for stuff before u go to the bank
2. Get the best newcomer deals at the bank, preferably no management fees on account, credit card 1500-2000 limit. I opted to open an RESP straightaway for our son, its a savings plan that the govt also contributes in addition to urs. You can google it up. I also didnt open a personal savings accct cos u get charged for withdrawals (but not charged for checking no interest paid though) and said no to overdrafts. I just wanted to have the basics and understand the system for at least a year.
3 Getting accomodation, factor in so many issues not just fine location, proximity to shops and transport, u may pay a little extra though. Also dont be in a hurry to buy a car, we landed summer and though it might be different if u land winter. If u can wait 6months to a year would be great
4. Settling in is great but dont spend too much money trying to set up urself like those who have spent 4years before u landed
5. Take advantage of the newcomer programs, though im expecting still applying for programs that will start months after my delivery.
6.Very important LISTEN to those who have been here before u, sieve information but there is no shame in getting a temp job while u wait for your dream job, there is dignity in labor. Met two diff people who landed way before us, one refused survival jobs early on and is trying to land one now, another didnt enroll in a newcomers program that would have paid a stipend cos thot would get a job before then but still searching.
Doesnt mean would be your story but learn from others mistakes
7.Also try as soon as possible to get income coming in no matter how small.so u are not under unnecessary pressure and be thrifty. That u have 20k cad buffer doesnt mean u have to spend it all while being jobless
8.Networking is key here, leverage on it

Let me stop here, i dont know it all but just keeping my ear to the ground and learning fast.

I think I’m probably the most silent observer here, only fair i share my experience.
Flight experience—-
I’m a single applicant so i travelled last week with just 3 check-in. Luggages (had to pay for the extra one), went with ethiopia airline a mistake I won’t make again (i had a 15 hrs flight from Addis Ababa to pearson airport). Well the flight was really tiring but the in-flight entertainment and food was decent (also with really pretty air hostesses)and i made sure to drink as much red and white wine I could helped me to sleep better.
Landing—-
So we arrived toronto in the morning, really great weather could see the sun was out already, went through immigration and I really spent time on the line (was actually a bit tipsy from the drinks i took so i left the airplane late) did the normal immigration process i had more than 10k with me so i had to declare it, i filled some forms was made to sign my landing document after I got my sin number and mailed it to my brother’s address in Etobicoke (this is not my first time in Canada been visiting every year since 2013). Took my luggages from the terminal (5) then gave the immigration officer my declaration card. I then ordered a lyft to take me to my brother’s apartment (note when you order an uber or a lyft make sure you go to terminal Q, its on the ground floor so take the nearest elevator downstairs because when you enter the arrival terminal you’re actually on the first floor).
Post Arrival—
So my brother was at work when i arrived( he told me where to get his keys from) settled in well took out all the foodstuffs i got and (i made sure to pack enough alomo and origin when coming it’s really pricey here). Luckily for me he cooked the day before so i microwaved my food had my bathe and took a nap. Wasn’t that jetlagged so I went to the nearest TD bank opened an account( the cross rate wasn’t that good but i had no choice, wasn’t comfortable carrying so much cash) went to the nearest lcbo to get liquor then i took a lyft to see a friend at Mississauga then went shopping at square one mall.

So far it’s been really great since my status now is a pr not a visitor I’m entitled to more benefits and opportunities. So I’m apartment and job hunting at the moment and just praying to God for the best.

a. I am leaving Winnipeg because I'm going back to school. University of Guelph for MSc. Winnipeg is actually a lovely place and cost of living is relatively low.
b. I am not sure if I will have anything left because the apartment I'm going to in Ontario is unfurnished and my things will be taken to Ontario by road.
c. Heat is for warming up the apartment when it is very cold especially during winter, electricity/ hydro is synonymous with NEPA light.

Honestly, I think its easier when its impulsive. One is not compelled to buy whatever is available.

Summer is in full swing already, the heat get as e be. Itz a bum short something, ribfeasts, a lot of outdoor events going on. No stress buy anything winter if you are landing before October. Besides there's always winter sales.

Would you advise I continue in that field there by specializing (please, which area would fetch more income, if so) or get a Pgd in a different career and start from there? All I need is something that can potentially take good care of a small family in the long run. Thanks in advance for your response.

Many thanks for the reply. I actually don't have any work experience in biology/zoology as I took up banking eventually. I hope to return back to my academic background once in canny and hence the question. I'm actually thinking of environmental, food safety or conservation. Do u have any suggestions or advice for me? do u think I need to return back to school? thanks once again.

I also searched for his number the day I was at Yaba. Couldnt buy anything cos they were all looking dead. So, one day at Ikotun market, I stumbled on a small shop, n got good winter jackets from there though not Canadian winter, but good for starters. And I think I got it cheap. Winter Jackets @ 3k each, Sweater @ 2k, and one cardigan @1k. Good thing is that I can switch back for another. See pictures attached...
Don't mind me...I just like off white. There are other colours.
I will still try out Yaba.

like I said earlier, there are different things you can do. Now it depends on your interest, what you already have, what experience you have and what you are willing to commit to or do.
