A great article I must say. That is the fact ,Togolese are taking our artisans job. But those guys are very hard working and serious( they have their short comings though). Worked with a Togolese tiler and builders before, their plastering and tilling is out of this world.
One problem with the average Nigeria is desperation and short cut to wealth. Even in their works they don't wanna put in the needed effort, rather they want to cut corners.

this is so so true , there is noway you will live in any of the west african countries , see how bricklayers lay blocks and plaster walls that you will ever feel comfortable giving your job or building work to nigerian bricklayers . horrible block setting , each time i point out these mistakes to them on sites , they still wont agree.

Not the training alone cos Nigerians are always good in everything they do. However excellence and time are mutually inclusive, meaning you can't do a thorough job without readiness to give the quality time required to achieving it. Unfortunately Nigeria artisans are always in a rush to finish up one job and start another as that translate to more money, our excessive quest to get rich at all cost and within the shortest possible time is the underlying factor behind our poor execution of projects. With our level of exposure Nigeria artisans will do better than their small neighbours anyday, if only they can overcome this get rich syndrome that have been substituted for quality.

Nigerian youths are no longer interested in artisanship. Take your car to the mechanic, it will be messed up and spoilt beyond repair. Nigerian youths are more interested in migration, Yahoo 419 and money rituals than going into plumbing, carpentry, mason etc.
Ironically, these skills are highly sort after in these countries we que up to get their visas.

Truth be told these Togolese can lay tiles like machine. You dont need to be chasing them around to finish your work, they are focus. Above all they are quite cheaper.
We Nigetians need to search our souls, we are all in the habit of quick fix to wealrh and everything!

Leave Nigerian artisans alone make them Dem Bobo themselves. We all talk about nation building but you can't build a nation when the basic sets of nation building which are artisans and handy people are poorly skilled and not hard working enough.

Ask a Nigerian carpenter to make you a wardrobe and you would almost want to take your money back. Poor finishing and they take forever. Same with a Tailor or even a mechanic.

Give it to someone from Togo or Benin and you would be amazed at how straight it is and perfect.

We are always about making money and not bettering the skills . The average artisan is still working with skills he gained from his Trainer who learnt in the 1970s. Something outdated. First money they get they use it to flex instead of reinvesting in themselves to learn more.

Well! well!! well!!!, i have read all the comments on this thread, all the accusations and counter-accusations. And this is my take, there seem to be a general belief of which i'm part of too that these guys do better jobs (Togolese and Beninoise) though i don't know about the cheap price. The university i graduated from engages these guys on almost all construction projects from building to tilling and painting, be it tetfund or whatever, no matter how massive the construction, note; i'm talking of a federal uni. A friend of mine who is a student and also a professional electrician saw a 300 hostel block under construction by the school entrance and asked if the builders are Beninoise, i said yes, and asked why the question he said from the looking he could tell, remember he is a qualified electrician who must have been used to how these guys work having met them on site several times. I won't mind giving my work to them too because i want a very good job, who doesn't?.
