​Following increasing concern about the level of insecurity in the country, former Vice President and Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2019 election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has advised the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai to relocate to the North-East zone, particularly Borno for better coordination of the fight against insurgency.



This is even as the former Vice President said the spate of killings in the land is such that the government’s pledge to end banditry and other forms of criminality in the country requires more action than sloganeering. Speaking through one of the 2019 Presidential campaign council, Prince Kassim Afegbua, Atiku flayed General Buratai for recently accusing soldiers of lacking in commitment to root out insurgency in the country.



He said: “The Chief of Army Staff should permanently be in Borno, where he will coordinate his troops. The Chief of Defence Staff should have an annexe office in Zamfara, where he would spend more time than sit in their comfort zones in Abuja. The Chief of the Air Force needs to also be on his toes. We need a new paradigm in terms of methods and personnel to fit into the sophistication of these crimes.



“It is about time the President goes beyond mere sloganeering, and sprouts to action. We are tired of weather-beaten rhetoric that has become so repetitive and boring. We need to see a different approach in terms of choosing the right personnel to dispense with the responsibilities of safeguarding the country. “From the statement earlier credited to the Chief of Army Staff, General Buratai, it does appear that we are in serious defence inertia. Some Nigerians have been saying that it is about time the President rejig his security personnel.



Let these tired legs leave the scene for a more robust and result-driven younger minds that will come up with a new perspective on how to combat our insecurity challenges.” adding that “the present Chiefs, seem to have reached their nadir and the motivation to deliver the right modules for effective security is tellingly missing.”



He called for a more robust approach in the fight against poverty and unemployment; two vices he fingered as the underlying cause of criminality in the country today.

But it's also risky for the man in charge of the army to be there. What if something happens to him? You know that once you take out the leader you can destroy the troop.

He is not the leader... Buhari is commander in chief so if he die there another or next in command to him will be appointed immediately and fight continues.

Same thing we saying... soldiers fight with courage and happiness when they see their commander in war front. So let him go there since both him and the soldiers undergo same training.

If he die like other soldiers, there are lots of soldiers under him that will take over him. Fight continues simple.

If this Govt is truly serious about ending this security issue, taking Atiku:s advice will be in the best interest of Nigerians.

He is not the President. He is free to air his opinion, but has no right, power or privilege whatsoever to issue orders to the Chief of Army Staff of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Line I said before, this is a good idea. It will boost the soldiers' confidence. But tactically it's not safe. Let's not put emotions into this, please.
