Why do we Nigerians love making noise too much. This seat or no seat issue is just nothing my people. Why wasting too much energy on one of those things for God sake How long are we going to keep talking this matter round and round and round

I think this issue is being overflogged.
Let's analyse the players:

Prof. W.S;
He is over 80 years, so it is very possible that he took that seat by mistake
If it was deliberate and he prefered window seats for obvious reasons, he should have planned it better-Ask for the seat during booking, most airlines would be happy to indulge him.
He didn't see it as a big deal so he got up. There's absolutely nothing petty about WS.

Bobo Fine;
He is young and probably exuberant and may not have recognised or even known WS
He may have gone the extra mile to get a window seat
He is opinionated and non-conventional
We don't know his story (no one actually knows this guy's story so we can't keep judging him). He might have a condition, he might have been unstable, goodness knows!
He was operating within his rights so he actually commited no crime.

Tonye Cole:
Was okay to have tried to reason with Bobo Fine but should have stayed out of it after the incident.
Had no business uploading that picture.
Probably did it to trend and gain national popularity for his Guber ambition.

Nigeria:
There's already the underlying issue of lawlessness and lack of regard for orderliness.
There's also the issue of the elders' demand for respect and their sense of entitlement.
Also, many Nigerians will rather go sentimental and more often than not, the real issues are left unaddressed.

Me:
I totally totally adore Prof. Wole Soyinka, I've read almost everything he has published and his views and policies resonate with me. I will consider it a privilege for him to have my seat on a plane (deliberately or mistakenly).

That said, If i catch any unidentified elder on my seat, you will surely have to 'gbe bodi' but i will definitely demand it very politely.

It's not really about respect. I have maximum respect for senior citizens. I defer to ladies, children and the elderly.

I just think we have to restore order and enforce some basic social principles so that this country can have a good shot at working.

Well written
You are indeed a true son of your father.
The social media get too serious with unimportant issues.

Was he not the the one that set the foundation for the bad cults that litter our Universities ? Which has today claimed over 100 thousand student lives since the 80s?

Is he not the one that set the bad foundation from that ugly uniform to poor service in the FRSC which is their culture today ?

Is he not part of those that supported this evil govt even though he knew they were demons?
You sound really dumb. It's apparent that the reason you dislike Soyinka is because he supported this government.
The other guy who quoted you pointed it out, but you quickly denied it being the reason and you quickly jumped into Soyinka being a cult pioneer.
Even after failing to establish a sensible point against cultism, you still went ahead to say 'he supported this evil govt" — a reason you initially denied

Good one from the young lad, Nigerian youths should learn to stand for their rights and what is right.. and only give up such right at their own discretion..

For me Soyinka was only trying to use complex psychology on the young lad, if it was an honest mistake like his son claimed, it wont have created such uproar.

All this na wash.... Would a young Soyinka had done what he was expecting from this young man considering his background? Oga Soyinka should have begged for his seat and not demand. Respect they say is reciprocal so all of them should go drown in the lagoon

That young lad probably thinks he is a hero by now but I can assure you he will regret this action of his in the future even when this national hero is no more around

When this ish started it was said that the young man is an Igbo man.... And all sorts of insults was heaped on this industrious people..... The Mods on NL enjoyed it.....no ban no caution....

Now...

It turns out to be a Yoruba boy ,who have no respect for grey hair, that kicked his elder from the sit.

Imagine if it was an Igbo man.... OPC, mumu king akiolu of lagoon will be giving wack threats.

Why are you people making this "seat rightly paid for" statement? the last time I checked seats in aircraft cabins (same class) go for same price

Nobody disrespected the prof.. the young lad only insisted on getting his rightful seat.

Why did soyinka in the first place pick a sit which is not his own? If he didn't have the assumption "because he is soyinka" anybody would obviously let go..

That is why our leaders keep holding us down because majority are psychologically trained to let go of their rights when it involves a celebrity, popular, elderly person. And because of this asslicking and suppressing, it's always "get rich or die trying" in Nigeria.

What gain can soyinka derive from the window sit that the young lad is not worth enjoying and rightly paid for. With all due respect sir, that is not disrespect.[/quote]

Did you for a moment think, maybe old age and he just sat anywhere?
Why are you so confident that he actually wanted to 'chance' the young man? You:re already assuming that he 'assumed' he could take any seat because he is Soyinka.
The real issue for me would have been if he didn't want to leave the seat

Nothing psychological here.
You are just projecting your jaundice understanding .
The way some of you youths speak to elders in the name of rights goes to show ineptly stupid and shallow some of you reasoning are;and no matter how beautifully written and how you present your claims
.No doubt, the young man was within his right, but he lost a moral convention which is, courtesy and respect.
I, for one will never tell an old man, old enough to be my father to stand up from my seat how much more a man with the status of Wole Soyinka.
But youth like yourselves with their "over sabi" attitude would always pick the wrong persons to do their sparing "rights" with.

I may totally disagree with the prof in many philosophical and religious ethos, but that does not detract from me respecting him.

Morality is and will always be subjective, and even relative... You won't ask an elderly man to stand from your seat, even at the expense of your health. But, make no mistake, that doesn't make you morally superior to the next person or a better man than they are... They have probably acted in better moral capacity than you have in other no less significant situation...

Permit me to break it down for you:
Do you always lend a helping hand to older people struggling with heavy loads?
If you own a car, do you stop for every disadvantaged pedestrian caught in the rain?
Do you always assist accident victims at the expense of your schedule?
Do you share your meals with those that can't afford to eat on a daily basis?
How much do you set aside monthly for strangers in dire financial straits?
Have you ever had to forego a personal luxury to attend to the pressing financial needs of the indigent? If yes, how often?

I could go on and on, but here is the bottomline: That a person errs in an act of morality that you excel in, doesn't mean he doesn't excel in another act where you would probably err in.

...And you are still confusing "Respect" with "Courtesy". That young man might actually esteem and respect Prof far more than you ever will. His reason for holding on to his seat could have been medical.

Call it the infringement of Western culture or absolute disregard for our cultures and traditions, you're very far from making sense mister, with this kind of indiscretion from the youth populace I fear for the future of this country.

Whether he supported this evil govt or not Jonathan needed to go. He was leading this country to nowhere. Buhari came and has disappointed to the surprise of those who voted him and also needs to go that is the process we must face to move the country and democracy forward. No time for Nonsense.

Personally, I don't have regard for anyone who associates himself with cultists. No matter how brilliant, intelligent, and how old the fellow is. Let him be Metusellah, he is a rag in my eyes. All those political old fools are not left out. No one will disrespect them if they had been righteous and if they had respected their elders. Go research and find out the number of elders the so called man had stepped on while he was young in the name of cultism. I will not confront him, but he in particular is not worth a pin in my eyes. Period!

Totally needless epistle.

Your father deliberately or mistakenly took a seat belonging to a young man; another silly ass decided to take photos and make a fuss about it and drag/shame the young man (for no reason) for disrespecting an elder based on cultural/moral grounds.

A lot of misguided twitter warriors jumped on to insult the young man basically saying he lacked good home training and extended the smear unto the entire population of Nigeria within that age range.

Others (like my humble self) came to the defense of the young man since he didn't do anything wrong and it was and still is not established he was rude to the Prof.

Please please please, can we drop this SHIT talk already?!!!

Who cares about a damn seat for crying out loud. Tonye Cole and his kith that were begging could very well have vacated their seats for Prof if they felt strongly enough.

Now, this STUPID letter from his son talking about WS like he brought down the Abacha regime single-handed. I wish I could SLAP that his face for adding fuel to this Nonsense talk.

Baba get your facts right, the pyrates confraternity he founded was an intellectual but radical group who fought with pens and a bit of activism such as taking over of the radio service announcement to declare the cancellation of the western region election of 1965.. Mr wole Soyinka (as he then was) never preached violence or used axes on the oppressors. Rather he fought intellectually but aggressively. Please always get your facts right. He created confraternity, if you like sorority, but not cultism.
