I remember Francis Obikwelu.

He ported from Nigeria to Portugal and even represented them for the Olympics.

Edit
Glory Alozie to Spain also, they were contemporaries.

I read their story some years back. It all happened due to the death of one of the athletes representing Nigeria at a competition (I can't remember the competition) and the federal government refused to pay for his corpse to be flown back to Nigeria. It was his fellow athlete who happened to be his girlfriend, that flew his corpse back. And that was how they denounced Nigeria.

I hope our broadcasting institutes will one bring the issue out, and reveal the whole saga to the people.

Nigerian medallist mourns fiance
2000-09-27 20:22
Sydney - When she won the silver medal in the 100 met re hurdles, Glory Alozie accepted the congratulations of her opponents, hugged her friends and teammates, and kissed the medal itself.

Poor substitutes, all.

Alozie's fiance, Hyginus Anugo, died earlier this month when he was hit by a car in Sydney. She didn't train for 10 days after his death, and considered withdrawing altogether.

"Her mind is kaput all the time," Alozie's friend and manager Julia Garcia said. "It was pretty bad. Her mind was not here.

"In this condition," Garcia said, "I think she is happy with the silver."

A 400m runner, Anugo learned on 6 September that he had not made the Nigerian relay team. But he didn't return home with the others who wouldn't be competing so he could stay and see his girlfriend race.

The next day, he was hit as he crossed the street.

Alozie was competing at a meet in Japan when she heard about his death. In mourning, she lost weight that she still has not regained.

"At the time, I considered not running," she said. "But later, I was encouraged by God."

Alozie ran the fastest time in the semis and led for most of the finals. But she hit her leg on the last hurdle and lost her rhythm; Olga Shishigina of Kazakhstan pulled even at the last hurdle and won by three-hundredths of a second, in 12.65 seconds.

"I was really focused on the race," Alozie said.

But on the medal stand, she thought of Anugo.

"This medal is very, very important to me, the most important to my life. Nobody can understand what I've passed through," she said. "I'd enjoy it more if my fiance Hyginus was still here."

American Melissa Morrison, who earned the bronze, said she had also left several loved ones in the past two-and-half years, and she understood what Alozie was going through.

"At the time, I felt like I didn't want to go on, and I didn't want to compete," Morrison said. "I applaud Glory for being here. She's a very strong lady."

Alozie said she has been comforted by the other athletes in the village.

"People have been so nice to me," she said, "(people) who I've never met before." - Sapa-AP

"On his part, Obikwelu hinted that he was frustrated out of the country by AFN officials through the unjust treatment he received during and after the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

I wasn’t happy dumping Nigeria for Portugal,” Obikwelu began. “I was ranked World number two best sprinter at Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. During the Games, I told AFN officials that I had a knee problem, but they said I was lying. I forced myself to run up till the semifinal and in the process, did more harm to my knee. Nobody in AFN was talking to me. I went to the doctor who confirmed that I had to go for a knee operation to save my athletics career. I went to Canada on my own for the operation and returned to Nigeria on crutches. I went to AFN and was told that money had been approved for me, but they didn’t know where the money was. You can see the frustration I went through. I had to go to Portugal. I bear no grudge against any one and Nigeria still remains my country,” Obikwelu said"....

Even though I like Messi pass Ronaldo, I just admire Cristiano zeal and hardworking ethics.
But Messi does not like u, Argentines are racist and anti-Blacks. I see no reason some Nigerians like Messi. Mind u I'm a Barcelona fan but i don't like Messi.

I'm not racist neither am I anti white. Messi is an icon of the beautiful round leather game and till their is an actually proven incidence of racism against Messi, I disagree with you.

Theirs no place for racism in football.

Yes...she went to Spain.

She was aggrieved at the loss of her fiancée, and the Government wasn't responsible enough.
didnt know her fiancé died that’s something with our sports administrators they won’t just do enough reckon if fasuba was an American British or German he’d still be in athletics Obikwelu and Alozie were top athletes tho I think at some point Obikwelu was the 3rd fastest in the world and he was the European champion too
