Don't Ever Buy Nigerian Used Car. by tetralogyfallot(m): 8:06pm On Jul 01, 2019
I was so unfortunate to waste my 600k to purchase a 9ja used ford focus. I have spent over 300k trying to fix either one problem or the other. The car keeps developing from one fault to another. I've replaced top gasket about 2 times, replaced ac compressor, fix the leaky ac pipes, replaced the engine manifold as the mechanic said it was not the follow come manifold that is on the engine and if I did not change it d car would be emitting smoke, I've replaced air flow meter, I've changed fuel pump like 5 times at last I just have to buy the complete fuel pump kit that was removed from accidented car, I've changed the lever gear as it gear hardens anytime I want to reverse, I've changed fan belts like 2 times, I've replaced the nozzles of the car as I was told it may be the cause of high fuel consumption. I've changed the clutch disc. The painful part of the story is that after all these changes the car is still not in good form cos I was about driving it this evening and the gear is failing to even respond. Please please and please don't ever buy a Nigerian used car. If you don't have enough money, save up n double your huste until your money complete to buy even if it a small tokunboh car. Nigerians don't sell their cars until it starts developing issues.

It depends on luck. My first car was a used car and gave similar issues as yours, my brother that car was agbaana, as yorubas will say. Changed gear and a lot of other stuffs and still the same. Sold it and got a another used naija vehicle, bro I dey enjoy am no be lie. Not everyone sells cos the car is faulty, some sell cos they want to upgrade. I was just lucky for the second car Sha.

Buy from people with money and good maintenance culture.

Usually when you buy Nigerian used just replace the engine, suspension and wiring harness first to have peace of mind.

You can keep the old ones as spares .

You've replaced virtually everything. It's safe to say that you're using a different car from the one you bought.

It all about the kazeems .
Car abused by kazeem for previous owner , bought, inspected and certified ok by kazeem to the new owner .Car given to kazeem to maintain by new owner and car finally kazeemised for the new owner grin.
Flee and run for your dear life if you u ever see a kazeem grin

Except you get the vehicle at a very good bargain, you replace all these and you may end up spending more than what would have gotten you a solid toks.

Next time you want to buy Nigerian used car ,take a recommended professional mechanic with you to perform a thorough inspection for you ,he might charge you a considerable fee but it will save you a lot in the future as average Nigerian car seller will always want to sell problem not car.
Finally ,not all Nigerian used cars are bad but it takes lot of skill and patience to separate the weeds from the wheat

Lol. I almost bought a black manual trans Ford Focus with same price range for Uber from Car Bazaar (Ijesha show room) early this year because it was just too cheap and with very low mileage, but that oval logo in front gave me a second thought.
Went online to check reviews and I thank God I never did.

Personally I believe Nigerian used cars are not the problem. The buyers and their kazeema are the issue here. I have seen naija used cars that run even better than the almighty toks. I have sold a naija used car that never gave an issue. If u see am sef U go think say na toks. If you had carried out your due diligence reading up about the said vehicle, knowing its common faults and all, and also taking along a "trustworthy" automobile technician not our dearly beloved borda Kazeem to inspect the ride (for a small fee), you would have saved yourself the stress of having to spend so much on a money draining project. And then you continued with the same kazeem that was just throwing parts at the car without careful system diagnosis.... baba na double triple wahala be that o. But then sorry about your ordeal sir. That kind car for sweet for project o. Autologic coman carry motor o hehehehe

Did you observe full diligence before you paid for the car ? The why tension others because of your own mistake. Next time, keep a little money aside 5-10k for a reputable technician to inspect every detail of the car before you pay, money is not meant to be wasted again. Ps, change your kazeem, he has used you to pay house rent
Re: Don't Ever Buy Nigerian Used Car. by Nobody: 1:37am On Jul 02, 2019
I’m on my second Nigerian used car. With my background it’s okay for me but both could have been problematic for the average buyer.

Both cars were well used and poorly serviced but all that are being reversed.

You have got to buy at significant lower price, like 50% off of a Toks price, and also set aside some money for repairs.

Unfortunately, you bought a lemon. What you’re doing is overhauling and not maintenance. I suspect though that your mechanic may be fleecing you.

Depending on the vehicle.
If you buy one with an expensive engine and parts you're in soup

Some cars are just lemon from birth and worse when bought Nigerian used. You change head today, the neck develops fault tomorrow. Fix the neck tomorrow, the chest breaks apart. Na so you go fix am till you replace the toes then the cycle begins all over again from the head.
My 1st 2 cars were all Nigerian used and I still have my 1st car serving me well as my daily car till now despite the abuse and kazeemised state it was when I bought it.
Some cars can't be unkazeemised when kazeemised by a kazeem.

this is why that area is still very grey!
at least for toks vehicles one can see history which will aid make an informed decision....

buying naija used with just ones intellect as guarantee that the deal is good is just not enough for me......
so if something else turns up that the mech failed to spot, who will be held responsible?

buyer, seller, mechanic or village people?

I only love taking calculated risks that can be hedged if need be.....
this is why, I started learning about cars in the first place....

I learnt the hard way that men do not always keep their word.....
I have spent money on things with just assurance that the deal is sealed.... from top guys in that specific Industry....

when the going goes south, you start hearing stuff like, these things happen from time to time.... it escaped me and all that....

all the long preaching just to create a lame excuse for failing....
anyways I usually love doing biz (also buying cars) with people with a lot to protect... esp online....
I know that if the money get as e take go, I can always try to create a scene online.....

it's a grey area without any straight forward direction if mechanic cannot be held accountable for certain mishaps.....

if I buy a car today, and I paid for inspection only for me to discover tomorrow that the whole underneath is rusted, na mechanic I go still hold accountable oh.

Boss, i am pretty sure you know quite well even oyinbo get kazeems and yes dey kazeemise cars over there. I don see tire. Now why did I say a mechanic cant give guarantee?
Lets talk abt timing chain or belt. If i inspect how do U expect me to know when the belt was changed or if it was at all? Imagine say belt cut for interference engine and valve bend would you hold me responsible for that? My point is this, parts fail. They are not made to last forever. Now for the inspection part, like I said the professional insoection gives you a better chance of Spotting issues after thorough inspection.
though mechanics differ bt for me if i was gonna inspect any car, baba na to enter internet and get enuf details of common faults and stuffs. That way I am armed and i know what to possibly look out for during inspection. Professional mechanic nob babalawo, he cant see through into the engine but with thorough physical inspection and deep scan... he can easliy pick up pending issues.

imagine few months ago a friend got a 2008 sienna. D day he came to show me, mehn d ride was clean toks baba... body clean, engine clean. Everything set. Baba na so i connect my small scanner, come see plenty transmission solen I d faults. I asked him shey check engine no show? Baba say at all. Na so he park. Swithced off engine, turned on ignition alas they have blocked the CEL. Didnt take magic for me to spot that. Transmission had been changed from 13 pin to 10 pin.
Whats the moral? Physical insoection this car passes 100/100 for a toks. But just a simple scan and the evil is revealed. Pata Pata if prospective buyer doesnt want to pay, then atleast get a capable scanner and scan d car b4 you buy.

still. grey right?
pretty grey if u ask me!

whichever way we go, there is a huge trade-off...

* if mechanic gives warranty it won't be reasonable....
* if mechanic doesn't and something goes wrong the next day... it won't be fair
*if buyer doesn't go with mechanic and he buys scrap..... he'd be dumb and stewpid
*if buyer goes with mechanic (no guarantee) and gets a very good buy then all is well.

in all these scenarios only one thing brings about the desired outcome.... some call it luck, some call it AYO babalola, some call it fortune

I call. it grace!

It's an extremely grey area (buying naija used) jare, that's why I'd prefer to deal with someone that has a rep to protect.... that way, he'd be guided accordingly and will do everything possible (within his means) to make sure I don't buy scrap... and I should be entitled to specifics (show workings) in case of any incasity!

I still understand your point tho! perfectly sef!

bro i truly get your point. You feel it doesnt make sense for you. You know about cars. But for other ppl who dont know what to look out for, they need a professional eye.
On the guarantee thing even even big car dealerships in the abroad dont ever give guarantees. It is the manufacturerthat does that. I wonder why U expect me as a mechanic to give you guarantee...hehehehe

nope this is not where I'm headed tho....
I'm talking, when and if something (within the mechanics purview) happens within a very short time after purchasing the ride....

buyer still takes responsibility, even tho he paid for inspection!

now another very recent online scenario...
A certain young man walks into a car lot with his trusty mechanic (Kazeem) tho.... the mechanic certified the ride OK and in top notch condition

some days later, vehicle was used to convey family to a different state
...

vehicle parked up less than halfway through....
buyer went back to seller to complain..... IMHO the mechanic should be the first point of contact....
he should have checked history ET all.....

now the scenario still played out well to the favour or this promising young man, with a minute loss in the hundreds of thousands..... after returning the ride.

but if that ride was bought from cars45 I don't think he'd have been able to return the ride!

now. my point is not whether the mechanic was sound or not... my point is who should have been held accountable?

and yes I still understand your point butressed above.... but this is the point I am trying to make!
