Oyo Technically Bankrupt – Makinde by JosEast(m): 6:15am On Jul 03, 2019
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde yesterday alleged that the funds siphoned by the immediate past administration in the state was making the state experiencing technical bankruptcy. Makinde spoke in his office when he received members of the Governing Council of the University of Ibadan led by the Pro-Chancellor of the institution and Chairman of Council, Dr Waklek Mutka.

He said: “When I came in, we were looking for ways to keep the government running because technically the government of Oyo State is bankrupt.

“If I take it as a private entity, I won’t lend a dime to the government of Oyo State. I will ask them to start winding up proceedings. So, we have been looking for ways to keep the government running.”

As if you will not loot when leaving office. It's a vicious and spiral ploy of politicians. Ikpeazu of Abia State will not complain of dry treasury so also all other governors that were re-elected.

Mr governor should do the right thing by probing Constituted Authority. And pass his case to EFFC. Get a good lawyer to tackle EFCC. Oga, stop complaining and get started. Oyo people that voted you in and disgraced APC knew the ex governor is a write-off. So, stop complaining and give Oyo people what they deserve.

Most states in Nigeria are bankrupt and under heavy debt burden.
You will agree with the governor if you familiarize yourself with bankruptcy.

How can it be that the same person who decided to undermine the financial sustainability of his state's educational system by declaring education "free" is now the one saying the same state is bankrupt? Was he unaware of that fact before making his grand gesture? If so, it suggests Makinde acts on impulse, and cannot be trusted with authority; on the other hand, if he did know, then his making education "free" was a gigantic act of cynical politicking, meant to buy cheap popularity at the expense of the people's welfare. Either way, this guy comes out looking utterly unfit for the position he now holds.

There's a simple way for this clown to provide irrefutable evidence for his claims, but it's one I'm absolutely certain he won't take: simply throw open the Oyo State government's books for public viewing, by publishing them in all their details on the web. I know he will never make the state's finances public as it would foreclose all opportunities for future looting of state funds, which I'm sure is the real motivation behind these new proclamations.

Maybe this is true, but it's about time governors started providing verifiable evidence of this by publishing their state accounts, instead of asking the public to simply take their word for it. Only when citizens are able to say with certainty where state funds are going will they be able to make a rational assessment of whether the funds are being used sensibly, so why are all the state governors opposed to such openness?

The Governor may be saying the obvious but he and his Ogun State Counterparts have not told us what they met in the Treasury. Is it difficult to tell the nation or your State what is in their purse?.Is their anything to be afraid of? Is their a backslash for political godfathers and godson's.Nigerians demands for truth so that when your term is up, no room for excuses.Alternatively, you can set up Committee to look into the past affairs and not just telling us 'you borrowed N7Bill.for workers Salary' alone!!.
