Barcelona star Lionel Messi has criticised match officials following Argentina’s 2-0 loss to Brazil in a semi-final match at the 2019 COPA America.

Goals from Gabriel Jesus and Messi’s Barcelona teammate Roberto Firmino ensured the Brazilians zoomed into the final of the competition on home soil.

However, Messi who has not won any senior international crown was furious with the officials over what he described as a biased officiating.

Speaking after the clash, he noted that Brazil were not better than his team but were lucky to get away with the win due to poor officiating.

“They were not better than us,” he said. “They found the net early and the second goal came from a penalty [to Aguero] they didn’t award.

“[The officials] were tired of making bulls**t calls at this Copa and they didn’t go to VAR. It was unbelievable.

“It was like that all match. It was bulls**t that they were doing it all match. There is no excuse, it must be looked into. Hopefully, CONMEBOL does something about this kind of referees.”

He added that “Because we did everything to try and advance but [the officials] stacked the deck against us.

“I don’t believe they will do anything because Brazil controls everything, so it is very complicated. But I don’t think we should feel bad for anything. It didn’t happen and we had bad luck.”
