Inverter changes DC into AC while UPS takes energy in either AC or DC and stores it in Battery as DC, then uses it to support either AC or DC system by switching over to the battery source when main source fails. A UPS contains inverter or a similar circuit.
Inverter on the other hand may not have a UPS.
