Does having QMS give an edge over Pure HSE practitioner.. Like in the case, organization needs Qhse. Practitioner?

No bro...QMS is restricted to streamlining the processes of the organisation and asking your safety team to handle such would be overkill especially for complex organisations or large organisations.

More confused... As hse practioners, don't you think we can have an edge in the industries if we have qms in the bag.. Wouldn't it increase the market value and chances of job competition?

Specialising in ensuring the safety and health of your workers, assets, the environment, the reputation of your organisation is your primary goal. The organisation can decide to give you additional roles that may not be the case for your next position down the line.

An example if I was interviewing you for a job I'd not ask about QMS but OHSMS.

QHSE is not a universal role as such nomenclature is organisation and location specific.

HSSE(Mostly companies in areas with security challenges), OHS(US and Canada), EHS(Canadian/US based companies, HES (Occidental), RTO (Transocean), WHS(Australia and New Zealand, OHSE(Middle East).

The smaller the company, the more roles you are expected to perform hence the QHSE. Some organisations go as far as recruiting nurses to be HSE personnel as well as medics. Which may not be applicable in other organisations.

I don't have a group I believe there was one that was started by the progenitors of this thread. Do browse through them. You can hit me up on my email from my NL profile and I'll try to answer any OHS related question and research on anyone I have limited knowledge on. Was great conversing with you.

Do you mean the ISPON certified courses or the externally certified courses?

ISPON certified course

ISPON certified course

You should follow the track from Level 1 to Advanced; this would help you collate knowledge on a stepped basis and help you understand more advanced and technical courses that you may encounter in a formative manner. This is so because your degree in Petroleum Engineering though it helps you understand your work environment (petroleum industries) better may not be the right right underpinning knowledge you'd need for a generalist course/career.

Just like walking you'd have to crawl first.

The health portion of HSE deals with occupational health, industrial hygiene and ergonomics; currently this can be achieved by combining certificate courses in hygiene, environmental health, human factors and occupational nursing which could be tricky to achieve as a complete course. You should also look for health risk assessment courses and 'return to work' courses.

You should look for courses from the following organisations.

CIEH - Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (UK)
AIHA - American Industrial Hygiene Association

I would like your insight on some things.
I have a BS.c(Hons) in Physics.
Over 8 years experience in Commercial Plumbing Engineering.
I have an HSE 1,2,3 certification.
I am planning to get a Masters degree and some Professional certifications to boost my CV.
What i am confused about is whether I should further in CONSTRUCTION or OIL AND GAS.
And what are the courses I can do so that I won't waste money on courses that might not be relevant.

Why not construction sir. You can't downplay construction particularly general maintenance and repairs when it comes to oil and gas. Your masters will speak for you in that regard. For construction, you only need the experience in oil and gas particularly and you'll be fine. But if you intend to dabble into instrumentation for instance say like tube bending and general aspect of piping and pipe fabrication, an oil and gas focused course will do you much good.

Bro, start with ISPON. I doubt if they give discount to corp members though. You'll need about 47k for General HSE and 27k for HSE Level 3. I'm a member of ISPON, Oyo State branch. And less I forget. Start networking just to see if you can at least get a small organization where you can learn the basics experience wise. Take care.

Egbon Kunle, just kukuma find a process safety course to try your teeth on. Your academic background is best suited for that.

HAZID - Course
HAZAN - Course
HAZOPs - Course

Shell Fred (Software)
Safeti (Software)
PHAST (Software)

Research on these later and see which will be softer on your to acquire first.

For starters try the NEBOSH Award if you are cash-strapped or go the ISPON.

Doc, as the popular saying goes, soup wen sweet nah money dey kill.

There are safety course ranging from 15k to 8million naira depending on how deep your pocket is.

Since you're already a medical professional I'd advise getting an Industrial Hygiene or Occupational Health qualification/course. It will compliment your pre-existing knowledge and expertise.

I would advise against specialising especially given that these courses do not come cheap. You should focus on general safety courses that can be applied on any industry.

Please I'll need assistance. I just finished my MSc in Environmental Geology. I'd have loved to do some of this courses but for now I'm not buoyant enough financially for some reasons.

I'd appreciate an internship or to volunteer in any organization. I'm in Port Harcourt. My email rotjiemmanuelp@gmail.com

Please help a brother find his way.
