In a bid to ensure the security, save lives, as well as encourage pedestrians to use pedestrian bridges at nights, all-in-one solar-powered lights and CCTV cameras have been fitted in almost all the pedestrian bridges in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Naijadriva had written about the low usage of pedestrian bridges by pedestrians in Abuja and we went around town to capture the sights of improvements made by government, in order to encourage to use and secure pedestrians who use the bridges. In as much that the government has taken measure to safeguard the lives of pedestrians on the road, pedestrians still endanger their lives by crossing expressways, even near pedestrian bridges!

The installation of the solar-powered lights and CCTV cameras is to reduce the fear reported by pedestrians that pick-pockets and other bandits rob them at pedestrian bridges at nights. Also, in few busy locations like: Dei Dei, Nicon Junction, Banex Junction, “Finance” Junction and Garki Area 3, mesh fences are installed along the midsection of the road in other to deter pedestrians from crossing busy roads, but sections of these fences have been vandalised by pedestrians who still prefer to cross the expressway. We did recommend that pedestrian bridges should be constructed in places like: Zuba (near Dan Kogi Park) Dantata junction (after Dei Dei), Arab Road Junction, NYSC Junction (Kubwa), Kagini Junction, Kubwa Phase 3 Junction, Katampe Junction (near VIO Inspection Centre), Mabushi, Area 3 Junction, near Zoo/House On the Rock axis and other areas but of all these, a pedestrian bridge is currently under construction between Gbazango Junction and Arab road, which in our opinion is not the best because it is far from NYSC junction, Gbazango Arab road and trust Nigerians, they will not trek over 25meters or so to use the pedestrian bridges.

Pedestrians should endeavour to use this bridges so as to safeguard their lives, health and live to pursue their goals in the Nation’s Capital. Government officials, especially politicians do not use the pedestrian bridges. They are made for your safety.Government should also heed to our recommendations, put refuse bins at either ends of the bridges for use of pedestrians to dispose refuse and use task force to arrest offenders who cross busy expressway NEAR Pedestrian bridges.
