Good afternoon good nairaland senior programmers. I am currently running my IT .In one startup firm like that.
I want to be a software developer as I am very interested in java...but the problem and confusion I have now is that we are not going to do java... but rather mobile development using FLUTTER AND DART in Android studio IDE.
I was panicked at first but had to convince my self that I can learn it(java)on my own and still flow with the class...
But as it is now, the first 2 classes ended in confusion as the instructor couldn't hold it down and we ended up going home not achieving anything concrete.
The lack of progress in this first few days of the class coupled with the fact that the FLUTTER AND DART are relatively unknown is making me restless...
My biggest fear is wasting my money and most importantly wasting my whole 6 months without being content.
I have already paid half the payment. Plss, I need your candid advice Biko. My head is processing a lot of things right now. Your advice can help a soul. Thank you

Why don’t you go through tutorials on your own on the above subject rather than just wait for the lecturer to dish out to you. Google and YouTube is your friend. I think you will pick up faster that way

Hi Promisedeco

If you want to be a software developer, you need to be FLEXIBLE.
You should be willing to learn other languages as the project you are to work on requires.

You should also consider yourself lucky to be given an opportunity to learn Flutter/Dart. Flutter is a framework built by Google to help you build for mobile (iOS and Android) and web with one codebase.
It's one of the "hottest" stuffs to learn right now and people are constantly sourcing for ways to learn it. You doing it for 6 months during IT is a big thing.

I would advice you open your mind to it, and learn it. It is also easy and fast to pick up so you should be fine.
You can follow Flutter developers on Twitter and see their insights from time to time (you can send a DM in this regards).

Don't worry, it's not a waste of your money considering you're interested in software development.
I also don't understand what you mean by wasting your money, can you be a little clearer? Are you paying for IT?

Good luck

Being a software developer is a good objective for your career. But do not think of it tied to a single programming language like Java. What matters the most in Software development is learning and using the most recent and trending tools, frameworks or programming languages and keep learning continuously. Learning Dart and Flutter are great opportunities in terms of this continuous learning (better than Java). You will be solving real world problems in your startup with these languages, this is another great step for being a software developer. What is more Android OS and Android Studio IDE is a very closely related and compatible concepts with Java.

So my opinion is what you have around you are great opportunities to become a Software Engineer and you will be able learn Java easily as a next step after mastering Dart, Flutter and Android.

Hello! I can absolutely agree that being a software developer is a good objective for a career. But also think that it is not tied to a single programming language like Java or Python. Anyway, that is much better to work in a team like guys from effective soft(https://www.effectivesoft.com/document_management_expertise.html) do. I think they are a good example. You can get in touch with them.
