Wiseandtrue: To get to any eastern port You MUST pass gulf of guinea And the gulf of guinea is now a nest of vipers The oil companies have loose cash So at least they pay their way through these pirates But can a regular business man do that? Once your ship gets hijacked Sorry We need to get that place safe first Then we can send some goods there It will help that side But will not crumble Lagos Life is not "zero sum" Win win situation is the end goal here 5 Likes |

gaetano: Chai! It's true ooo!!! If they renovate the ports in your place Lagos go dry. Most of the folks working in Lagos are from SS and SE. But then that shouldn't stop us from diversifying. There's nothing wrong in having two mega ports in our country. I really hope that our government will consider renovating a port in SE/SE. |

anyimontana: I have worked at both Lagos seaport and airport. Do you know the volume of cargo that comes in by air everyday? 90% of the fruits and poultry imports, come through air, most telecoms cargo come through air etc. For every ship that berths in Lagos, 20 cargo planes have already landed and left. Don't underestimate Lagos being commercial capital. It goes beyond container imports. 6 Likes |

DexterousOne: Rare to see your breed this days on nairaland as you sound knowledgeable and articulate without any sentimental bias.kudos On the other hand,we all know the whole pirates on gulf of Guinea claim if it was made by the govt is a flat excuse not to tamper with some individuals who control that port's pockets.Excuses abound for so many failures in this country and if the govt was serious about decongesting the port and thus bringing development to other regions in the country, piracy will be a secondary issue |

The way forward is to diversify and open other ports, especially, the Calabar Sea Port. We can not run away from the truth. Must everything come from Lagos? |

Dechymmytv: Odieshi is real. I have witnessed it with my own very eyes during a military operation. I'm not even referring to 7.62mm (Special) fired from AK, but a higher caliber weapon, 12.7mm. The downside to it is that, the day it will fail, the bearer will not expect it. E go be like film trick. 1 Like |

TheAutoReporter:The size of the truck park is my concern. It is still too small. The trucks on our roads are in excess of 2,000. So this park will only take a fraction of them off the roads. Secondly, truck drivers and motor boys are a notoriously dirty lot. A competent facilty management company, needs to manage this edifice to ensure it remains clean and efficient. Thirdly, this kind of park needs to be built along Orile axis, as well as Mile 2 side. About 5 of these facilities should also be built in different parts of Lagos, with electronic call up equipment, changing rooms, toilets, baths etc all inclusive. If this is done, then traffic along Apapa axis can be curtailed, as a substantial number of trucks will no longer be parked along the roads, but will now be domiciled inside such facilities. 2 Likes |

DexterousOne: Not disputing that but believe me that if pirates operated in such a way that oil won't find it's way out of the country whether it occurs in Nigerian waters or not,the govt will not treat it with kid gloves. They will do everything within their powers to make sure there's smooth sailing as it works right now. There wont be any excuse cause that affects their pocket directly. As I said, the govt at the very least should restore those ports to working conditions then we can worry about pirates later. Its just like the fed govt saying they can't stop Boko Haram because nobody agreed to sell them weapons.Logically it's an excuse but at the same time no excuse. |

GeoAfrikana: While the easterners are right on their point that the phenomenal growth of Lagos has been due to the presence of the port complexes, even if they split up the traffic and sent some to the delta areas, Lagos can never go down again. It has become a regional hub of African commerce, too much infrastructure has been vested in there already. The real reason for the pressure on the Lagos ports is that shipping to the delta is much more expensive (higher insurance costs) owing to piracy in that section of the gulf of Guinea. But we all know that the pirates are natives of that same region, they are kith and kin of the same set of people screaming here on nairaland about Lagos' undue advantage. My one regret is that other SW governors have failed to leverage on the proximity of Lagos to their states for massive development of the entire southwest. All they needed to do was build excellent road and rail linkages and by now we would have been talking of a 'Greater Lagos' conurbation stretching as far inland as Ibadan to the north and the southern reaches of Ondo state to the east. We would have had one of the largest industrial regions in the world, it would have been the undisputed giant of Africa! 3 Likes 1 Share |
