The cities with the worst traffic congestion have been revealed by TomTom in its 2018 Traffic Index.

The report, gathered from across 403 cities in 56 countries, found that Mumbai in India has the highest congestion levels in the world. Here, commuters spend an average of 65 per cent extra travel time stuck in traffic.

The Colombian capital of Bogota follows with 63 per cent congestion. Lima, the capital of Peru, comes third with 58 per cent.

Despite the increase in traffic congestion across the world, Ralf-Peter Schäfer, TomTom's VP of Traffic information, remains hopeful.


According to him, TomTom is "working towards a future where vehicles are electric, shared and autonomous so that our future really is free of congestion and emissions. We have the technology to make this future happen - but it takes a collaborative effort. From road authorities to governments; car makers to car drivers, we all have a part to play."

Lagos state is missing

One noticeable absentee from this list is Lagos, Nigeria's largest city. It is notorious for its congestion which has Lagosians spending hours in traffic on a daily basis.

One reason for this is the fact that the population is currently hovering between 9,013,534 according to the 2006 National Population Commission census and over 22,553,924 according to claims by the state government.

A contributing factor is a surge in the number of private vehicles combined with the bad roads and the state's inadequate transport system. These four factors making Lagos roads a nightmare to motorists.

This explains why Lagos was ranked as one of the worst places to live in the world last year.

According to Mercer, the largest human resources consulting firm in the world, the megacity has the worst quality of living in 2018.

In the annual ranking, Lagos ranked low (212), followed by Durban (89) which is the second African city on the list.

Who does the development?
As a guy, I believe you can arrange your house.
If power reach, can do your compound.
If you still have energy, you need to gather your neighbours/association and fix up your street.
You need to be a heavy big boy to fix up your estate. And that's the highest power a single fellow has
The state roads are in the hands of the government and if those roads remain erroded and impassable, vehicles and business cannot function.
That's why people will still run out and back to Lagos.
Other state governments need develop their states as individuals cannot do this

Y won't dere be much traffic in lagos,when people from different locations illegally com to pitch their tents there,the worst part is those big men that do acquire big cars everyday by day more than 2 for that matter just to belong..

If Sanwoolu wants to leave a proper legacy, open waterways for affordable boat public transport ALL OVER Lagos. Waking up at 4-5AM for job that starts 8AM is a ticking time bomb. A city of 24 million, all lives governed by traffic. Terrible stuff.

It's the only solution and they know but they wont do it. It will affect NURTW's revenue because a lot of commuters would use the waterways thus reducing the number of buses on the road. Nurtw is an important stakeholder in Lagos politics.

Warri would have been a relatively safe city rivalling Lagos
it has a port
And many Oil Coys were anchored there

But when the myopic, short sighted and stupid youths and people began there kidnaps; harassment and creating an atmosphere of chaos and insecurity
many fled to lagos
the companies fled to Lagos

Port Harcourt has taken that same self destructive route with "devee" ; harassment, cultism etc in the state
many have fled to Lagos and Abuja as well.
now port Harcourt is quick descending into a poohole

Kano and Kaduna would have easily been rivals to Lagos
But ethni religious crisis and violence have made many flee Kano and Kaduna to Abuja and some to Lagos
assuming Kano and Kaduna were not time bombs, many youths would have been moving there as an alternative to Lagos as was done in the 1980s

what about onitsha?
onitsha used to be a nest of vipers

robberies

our people fled to Lagos
built homes and opened their businesses in Alaba

tho now things have improved greatly and peoole are now moving to onitsha
even night life and shoprite and other businesses for leisure like that are springing up

Lagos is receiving all these crowd and investment because of the relative safety (I said relative) and businesses are setting up there, and if course the relative tolerance

we need to go to the root of the matter
to understand why Lagos is congested.

What u said is very correct. When I was in Lagos all the obituary posters were of men in their 40s 50s and rarely 60s!!! Most houses on the mainland are run by landladies... Where are the landlords

The cause of Lagos's traffic is spiritual. The cause is always unknown.

Only God knows what will make me live in Lagos in this world. Maybe a job that pays me at least 400k a month PLUS I must live within walking distance of my office. Anything else, NO WAY!

My pain about this traffic is that it's a problem that can be solved but stakeholders (government and populace) chose to do nothing.

People problem: obey basic rules of driving for Pete's sake. Drive only on ur right of way only.

Government problem: fix potholes: there is this big ditch that constrains cars to one at a time causing gridlock on the way to marina.
Open up other means of transportation (waterways and light rail) thereby greatly decongest the roads.

If we can get this right in Lagos then our life expectancy will improve. Everyday I feel my health is deteriorating after work.

Very true about NURTW. Look at the nonsense with the bike hailing apps. NURTW making our lives stressful while NURTW chairman children are living comfortable going to good schools in the US. Tragic stuff.
