I understand your point and that's the reason I said that opinion is unpopular and many will disagree..

If you're rating their entire defence performance on goals conceded and trophies, it's okay, but I don't want to believe it was the defenders in those top teams doing incredible defensive duties,in fact its largely as a result of massive qualities they've got in attack, ability to posses and wingers pinning opponents back, if you see lots of this big teams, weaker teams don't attack them.

See barca, teams hardly get to their box, pique overlaps anyhow, semedo and Alba mount pressure on opponents, I don't see them sweating like Simeones' men.. Those are defenders..

Arsenal's attempt to attack teams like barca,Liverpool,Bayern city is the reason why we lose with a cricket score, Chelsea, utd will rather keep it tight with more men behind the back and rely on counters to score..
The moment thies teams face an equally or better attackers, they also concede in large, The following fixtures comes to mind:
barca vs Bayern. Liverpool, city. Barca vs PSG, barca vs Liverpool, barca vs roma ...but against average attacks, they dominate and keep you off the ball..

Barca over the years do not have man to man better defenders than Madrid..

Teams like Madrid, juve and Chelsea rely on individual defensive effort to survive, Ramos, varane,Terry, vidic, ferdinand,Godin, kompany, koscv.dijk are examples, stones, pique,Alves,Alaba, boateng et all are ball playing types who keeps you off the ball ..
but city, barca and PSG, its majorly ability to guard and posses the ball well which prevents opposition from even getting the ball..

Schezney, Kosc and mert benefited from this in 2014 or 15, we had the golden glove that year, this isn't because they were genius, we had players in carzola,Sanchez, rosckiy, coq et Al who are good at keeping the ball..

Ferguson played traditional defenders, Rodgers team bottled it on match 37th at crystal palace, surely, defensive weakness will show but its a sign you can go far, I mean if Auba, laca and pepe can be ruthless and score as much as many chances, 3-0 at half time would have settled the defenders Nerves, should they attempt to attack us in numberd for equalizer, we kill them more on the counter..

I'm for us getting defenders but for lack of funds to to that, I believe with quality forwards who can break teams down, our defenders can fair well this year, and we bring in A class CB next summer like Liverpool did.
Once again your head is correct. Our defenders are not the worst in the top six. It's the midfield and attack that over exposes them. A winger loses the ball and fails to track back, leaving the defender with two to mark.

Our defensive woes are not due to bad defenders but poor TEAM defending.

Holding and Chambers, Socratis and Mustafi could hold their own when under less pressure. Give them the confidence by ensuring they have cover, they would be classy. Give them the right psychology by placing good men in front of them.

At 0-0 by 70mins against the likes of Watford, West Ham, or Everton you know we are going to lose. But go 3-0 by 60mins and it's game over.

Against the big teams, they know that attacking us is exposing themselves to dangerous play, so they will be careful. I am not afraid of losing as long as the effort to win is made.

what I have been saying since last season. I remember telling y’all that defense has never been our strength at least in the last decade. We’ve always leveraged on our midfield and attack.

Emery will pack the midfield with bunch of uncreative players making the attack blunt and exposing the defense, then we start picking on the defenders.

God bless you bro, not many will understand those points, it takes some deep reflections..
At the bolded, you see teams like barca,Madrid, city,l.pool etc kill games of by 2-0 of 3-0 at 35th minute, tell me how psychologically how they won't be balanced confident and relaxed...
The moment Chelsea scored first in that final, I knew it was game over, For sure, Niles and kola will bump forward, the slow xhaka and ozil will be exposed by Chelsea's pace from the middle and gbam our CBS will crack with constant pressures from hazard,Pedro and Williams..

This happened in our first 2 games against city and Chelsea, you'll notice Sterling and Mendy were doubling up on bellerin a day, he was tormented and drained all day till he got broken in the 2nd half, no protection, and our forwards in ozil, mhicky were losing the ball any how without gi
Causing city any problem instead of just passing the ball sideways and backwards..

Something at the bridge, hazard,Williams and Alonso had space to torture Hector like a prisoner.. Then fans conclude bellerin is trash and all...

Ability of your forwards to hold, shield, posses, convert chances plays a vital role In teams defense.

That Arsenal discussion guy along with zimstagram are number1 haters of Guen, all their post are on him,go check, that's not his first, even if guen play well, he rates -0,they've been trashed out over and over by fans in there..

We don't know him, top managers, legends and certified football personnel have heaped praise on the young lad,so his has no weight...

The game I saw yesterday, the boy didn't put a foot wrong, his case can be likened to those who come Here to blame everything on him, he is the reason Niles &Leno made that blunder, martinelli didn't bury the chance and mustafi and Chambers not tracking Suarez.
Re: Arsenal Fans Thread: The Red & White Army: 2025/2026 EPL Champions! by Fkhalifa(m): 11:02am On Aug 05, 2019
Auba's goal is lovely, he seem to do better against teams outside England a lot, he's the type that'll score 40 in German, liga and those leagues...
In England he needs creative players who can go past players to break teams... Laca did for him, but he needs a pepe/ceballos..
Our youngsters aren't physically ready IMO, they were dispossessed a lot..
The match looked like a fitness practice, the gods of football must be angry at mustafi, he came in and they scored us. cry

The boy holds the ball, maybe too much atimes, invites people to him, thereby creates space to pass to or win you fouls, is that not better than the most erratic midfielder in the league who panics and pass to the nearest man, lose it and put his defenders under pressure..
Fans on YouTube, instagram and blogs are on one voice on who they want out in that midfield asap.

You dey mind dem? They all watch Bernardo Silva play and marvel at how he makes runs, tackles spiritedly,etc....they see how debruyne no dey waste time once he sights u about to make a run releases the ball with a powerful pass, etc....But No! They prefer the way Guendouzi shields the ball unnecessarily, gets fouled shielding the ball when he ought to have long passed, and ends up passing when the opponent has almost figured our attack out....Anyway I don't blame them sha, na the coach wey dey comfortable with his game play

Just look at sterling at Liverpool and sterling at city. See the difference. See how the coach has helped sterling developed from that diving player that holds to the ball unnecessarily to a great winger who deals with defenders and doesn't stop until he either scores or some of his teammates does.

Funny thing is Guendouzi isn't even as talented as some of our youngsters in the last we let go like dem Carlos vela and Co.

your first paragraph is visible to the blind. Guen is not an attacking threat neither is he good at shielding the back line. But according to some he deserves to start cos he’s 21 and Xhaka ain’t performing up to expectations.... smh

He plays the “let it not spoil in my hand football”, mostly backward and sideways passes with predictable forward passes.

How come nobody talked about ozil's pass to Auba before that goal yesterday? It's unfortunate the only person capable of going that pass in our team is ozil himself.

Guen is better than Ozil. In fact he taught Ozil how to make that kinda pass.

Just stop it already!

The sheer brilliance of that pass positioned Auba to make that sort of turn. This is because the ball arrived with the right speed and velocity and if you consider the distance that pass traveled and the opponents it evaded you should not call that a normal pass.

Lolz....I'm sure u are just trolling. That's a Grade A Fabregas pass. A pass that picked Auba out despite being shadow marked by two defenders and even the sliding legs of Umtiti couldn't stop.it from getting to its destination.

Only ozil can do that within the shortest distance.

NICOLAS PEPE | IN MY OWN WORDS

My family sacrificed everything to make sure I could become a footballer. And when I say everything, let me tell you that I mean everything.

My family emigrated from Ivory Coast to France in 1995 and used to tell me about how difficult that was, especially when we were at school. They used to tell me that we had everything and they used to have nothing.

They would tell us stories of how they’d walk 10 kilometres barefoot and we were lucky to be able to go to school by bus. When we grew up, my mother and father stopped working and came to live me with just because of football, and just to make sure my dreams came true.

They were there during the toughest times and the best times and they are still here right now. That is what they have done to this day. They helped me make this dream come true and they will continue to be by my side to support me.

Let’s go right back to the start, when I used to play in goal. When I was a goalkeeper, I think we used to win six or 7-0 and I asked if we could change it so I could play on the pitch because I was bored in the goal. So then I swapped and moved on the pitch and I would even score.

Playing in goal back then helps me a lot now. I know how a goalkeeper moves in relation to the position of the ball. That means I have a different way of analysing the position of the goalkeeper perhaps in comparison to others who might not understand how a goalkeeper moves. I know very well how they think and move in relation to the position of the ball.

I loved playing in goal when I was really young but when I was 13 years old, I moved outfield. That’s when I started to imitate Drogba and his celebrations. He began by playing for Marseille and we would watch him there. That or when he played for the Ivory Coast squad where he did the coupé-décalé, a type of dance. That is something we would often do with my friends. It is something I will never forget.

After spending some time at Poitiers, I began my professional career at Angers. I remember when I signed my first professional contract, I had to make the sacrifice of dropping down to the third tier, the National, and play on loan at Orleans, at a much lower level than I wanted.

It was tough because I had just signed a contract at a Ligue 1 side but then immediately had to drop down to develop my game and come back a stronger player. After a tricky first couple of months, that’s exactly what I did.

After all, at Angers I was definitely not always on the right track and had a lot to learn. Actually, on a day I arrived at the training centre at the start of pre-season, I had this big mohican and the coach asked me to get rid of it. I did not get rid of it straight away. I kept it but, the longer I kept it, the less I trained. So, in the end, I cut the whole thing off.

Of course in those early days I had lots of people who were close to me, and my agents, as well as Abdel Bouhazama who managed to set me straight. These are mistakes that were very useful to me to avoid making the same mistakes again.

They were childish really and they were mostly on the pitch. There were times when I would be really blasé. For example, I remember an under-19 game against Guingamp when the coach, Bouhazama, shouted at me.

I answered him back and he took me straight off the pitch and we lost the game. He told me off for that little incident. Those were things that I did where I then had to apologise to the group because I had penalised the team. I learned a lot from these episodes and I had to become a lot more mature to really avoid that kind of incident happening again.
Bouhazama was a big influence in terms of my training. He is a coach who meant a lot to me, not just in terms of football but in terms of everyday life. He taught us a lot, both to me and the young people at the training centre. I think he teaches them a lot because, as he says, there is more to life than football, there is also life.

If you do not have football, you need to knuckle down in life. For example, he would make us run at six o’clock in the morning to show how things really were in normal daily life. We would see binmen picking up rubbish at six o’clock in the morning while we were on the pitch.

He showed us that we were lucky to be there and so we had to make the most of it. These were things that we began to be aware of. It used to be a bit of a joke to us but then, as we saw that every day, we definitely took our work very seriously. Because being a football player is actually all about the profession. This is something he really taught us a lot about.

You see, it’s not been easy for me and that’s why it’s so emotional for me to be here. I have come a long way and struggled a lot, so signing for this great club is a big reward.

My family, my agents and I talked a lot about it during the Africa Cup of Nations. It was so important for me to make the right decision in the next stage of my career, and I’m convinced that Arsenal is the right choice.

When I think of this club, I think of all the French guys like Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Robert Pires. Then I also think of Mesut Özil, the world champion, Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and many more.

Auba and Laca spring to mind because I used to watch them when I was at Lille. Also, Laca used to play for Lyon, so I had the opportunity to play against him and it will be an honour to play alongside him.

I also think about the Ivorian players who have represented this club before me. I am following in the footsteps of Kolo Toure, Manu Eboue and Gervinho. They are the major players from the Ivory Coast. We talk a lot about Gervinho, for example, who played for Lille and ended up at Arsenal so I am on the same path. They are definitely examples to us young Ivorians and I hope we will continue to follow these examples.

Kolo was with us on the national squad as an assistant coach. He spoke to me a lot about the very high level, how he got to Arsenal and how you always have to work hard and really graft on a daily basis to try and get right to the very top.

I have made mistakes but I’ve learned from them. I’ve got to where I am through hard work and dedication. I’m ready to do that here at Arsenal.

Nicolas Pepe

A long read but it shows that apart from the talent, he has an elite mentality to match it up...

Your first error is to compare Guendouzi with De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva.

Your second error is to think Guendouzi is an all attacking player, in fact he is primarily defensive.

Third you forget that the likes of De Bruyne were once rejects. Your lots made that kind of mistake at Chelsea, they never saw anything good despite that the lad was YOUNG and DEVELOPING.

Show me me where DE Bruyne was given starting place in Chelsea for a year and I will beloved anything you want to say about Guendouzi.

Guendouzi has got the playing time dem De Bruyne never had at Chelsea and he's been the way I described in my post.

Guendouzi should be reserve player at beat and shouldn't be a starter at arsenal. He hasn't done anything in the last one year to suggest he deserves a starting role.
